Converting a system tray application to metro app

What is a best practice for converting a system tray application that displays menus with child menus, that monitors RSS feeds, and even monitors USB drives and network attached storage devices to a metro app(s)?
I have a system tray application that monitors USB drives and NAS devices for custom data; such as temperature, available space, and error events. How can a new metro app tie those events to live tiles, toast, and badges?

No. Metro style applications can't work as a service and communicate with drivers directly.

Thanks for your reply.
Can I or should I create a service that the Metro App talks to, letting the service handle the communication with the drives?

There isn't any way to communicate with other processes for a metro style application. Even if you use some trick, such as writing and reading file , to communicate with others, such kind application will still be rejected by the Application store.
