Proposing own replies as answers ?

Hi All,

Recently there has been some confusion (at the MSDN SharePoint 2010 Forums) on proposing own replies as answers . Now, proposing never entitles that the reply is the answer for the thread. It is in the hands of the thread starter or an moderator to mark it as an answer.

Personally I dont see any wrong or harm done by proposing our own replies as answers. We users spend time here in forums, try to answer the queries and if we feel we have utilized our valuable time in helping someone, what is wrong in proposing our reply as an answer?

It would be good if moderators can respect the users' reply and also support them when they propose their reply as answers.

Trouble of windows XP SP3

I have a trouble, today I press on my power button as normally, because for last night I had use my machine to dial up and working good. But, when I push it on won't start normally in the morning, even in safe mode not function, and I got some alert like this when I try to repair it from a CD windows"an unexpected error (1398213232) occured at line 1773 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c. ". Please help me to resolve the problem. What the problem with my machine. Thanks regard from me for the answer. I am trying to delete a folder, but I get the message that I need permission from TrustedInstaller. How do I get this. I have signed on as Adminstrator and am the only one who uses this computer.
ANny help will be greatly appreciated - it is a big fiile and is taking up a large space on my hard drive!

See RZ's post for step-by-step instructions to take ownership away from TrustedInstaller. Once you get the hang of the Properties > Security tabs, it's not that mysterious.

However, if you ever want to give ownership back to TrustedInstaller, you need to know the secret identity NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller and where to key it in. Here's instructions how to do that:

Since you didn't say, I'm going to guess you want to remove Windows.old folder. There are a number of threads here that say to use Disk Cleanup instead of trying to do it manually. Notice that post now only contains a quote, but no green checkmark. The original post was deleted by a spiteful moderator. That moderator machine-gunned the majority of my posts the other night, right after banning my account.

I'm using a new account now. Actually, a 2nd new one since then. Click the avatar of that post above to see it only had a very brief life. It got banned too.

My understanding was that if an OP marked his own reply as an answer that he got no points.

But what about the Top Ten list ?

We have some new forums and thus people are appearing on the lists with only two answers to their name. In one case I have the feeling that the poster's only answers have been to threads he started himself and then marked (as answer) himself.

If this IS the case, the forum software should be amended - no points and not counted for top ten lists ! But is it presently possible ?

This is a follow up to the previously robust conversation by the same name (linked below).

Unfortunately, Carey Frisch (MVP, Moderator) erroneously marked a completely irrelevant comment having nothing whatsoever to do with the very specific and explicit question that I asked in that thread as an answer. What's worse, that thread is now locked:

So, since I promised to keep folks updated with what I learned from Microsoft, I am posting those results in another thread in the social.answers side rather than here on the more appropriate TechNet side. Yes, you don't have to tell me. But I'm afraid that someone might prematurely close this thread if this it becomes as lively as it did before, even thought TechNet is a more appropriate place for this conversation.

To summarize the issue, I want to know if it's legal to delete the file "ei.cfg" from Windows 7 installation media. That hack to the media has been floating around the web for a couple of months, and I was surprised to see it posted in some third-party Windows 7 forums. Some people thought it was a violation of the EULA because doing so creates a medium that can be used to install any edition of Windows 7, even though Microsoft has not itself distributed such media. But the moderators and owners of those forums did not seem concerned. The issue seems unclear to me. However, Microsoft documents how to make changes to that file for various purposes at

I've presented the question there. So far, I've gotten a little runaround from Microsoft, but now it seems that a definitive answer will be coming in a couple of days, if not sooner.

Since some folks have asked, I've explained my reasons for pursuing this issue in that thread at social.answers (also, again, because I don't want to start another very interesting conversation here only to have someone cut it off erroneously and prematurely.)

Keep your eye on that social.answers thread. This could prove interesting.

Ronnie, I think you realize my (deleted) posts clearly did not advocate any use of ei.cfg except for honest purposes. In my reference to the whimsical motto Just Do It, I simply meant that sometimes there are grey areas in this world where we just plain need to be pragmatic.

Take a look at this post (from CF.MVP) that actually very helpfully pointed me to a "conventional OEM or Retail Windows Vista 64-bit DVD" to replace my existing OEM-O/S. In that case, to use my OEM-HP-32-key, I'd likely need to tweak-down (not up) the installation provided by that (full retail fpp) disk. Totally honest intent.

I will continue watching this thread too, to see if any official response is forthcoming. Even then, unless an official MS link is posted, it will be second-hand info for the rest of us.

Forum Rules? (Regarding Homework)

Are there rules regarding the use of the forum somewhere?

I found the FAQ which has a sentence on how to get kicked out. And I found the "Terms of Use" that talks aboutt use of the API. I was not able to find any actual code of conduct or specific rules.

The motivation behind this question is with regard to homework. It seems that as the end of the semester/quarter nears we get lots and lots of "here is my homework assignment, what do I do?"

I have seen several posts say it is against MSDN policy to provide answers to homework:

got the above from derosnec:in my inbox and have used this feature for years with no problem.

I thought that perhaps the prt sc button on this laptop is accessed differently ie it shares a button with home
but I can't cut and paste from anywhere and put it into paint program.

steps:
highlight to select
copy command from menu bar or right click menu
go to paint program
rectangular select tool is selected
move mouse to new document (white space)
right click to paste -- not available
choose paste from menu bar -- not in bold
nothing happens

if I draw something and then cut in this program I can repaste the cutout

I am still not sure where you are trying to copy from.

Trying to repeat your steps with Vista, I clicked to highlight a jpg-picture file on the desktop. Next I right-clicked it to Copy. Then I opened MS-Paint and tried to Paste it. It wouldn't go.

Next, I opened that picture in W.Photo Gallery. Copied it to the clipboard via right-click menu. Then went into Paint and tried to Paste it. Again it wouldn't.

However, I can screen-shot just fine with my notebook. It requires use of the special Fn key: to screen-shot, I need to press compound keystroke Fn+PrScn else Fn+Alt+PrScn. That method Pastes just fine into Paint.

Am I being helpful, or should I apologize for butting in?

I wanted to inquire about the possiblity of having another stick thread in all forums. one with some short and simple posting directions/suggestions and maybe with some basic netiquate also, maybe like a shortened version of what MVP Daniel Petri has included on a support page, along with some basic netiquate. there seems to be plenty of "help me!!" type of questions with little to no information in the post, also the amount of people the are using caps or trolling . just something that would catch most peoples attention like "Please Read Before Posting" or anything else that would help with some of these situations and lack of information that is being posted

/rant/ Please DO NOT use local times when posting outage notices. The majority of your users are from outside the US. To work out when an outage is gonna occur, I first have to find out what the local time difference is from UTC, add that to my local time difference from UTC, then work out the difference. If you posted your outage notices in UTC (which is good practise for any international forum BTW.....), then I'd be able to do it quickly, instead of wasting time hunting down what the difference is between PDT and UTC, before I can then work out when it's gonna happen in my local time. /end rant/

Hello,
where is the place for suggestions?
All the product forums contains several subforums about "How to" and "Problems"
But I have not any idea where I should post suggestions.

And about this "Problems", wait MS for answers from other users, or what happens with this problems?
Wherefrom the MS knows this is a bug report and the Problem is a bug, or the "Problem" is a "How I can..." problem?

Users with real bug reports and suggestions are lost in space here.
At least the forums about beta products should contain a "Suggestion" subforum.

When I click on MS Word 2010 (with Endnote X3 Installed) the tab causes MS Word 2010 14.0.4536.1000 to Crash!
When I launch MS Word 2010 with Safe mode initiated /safe command in MS Word Link it opens and is able to perform normally

I am Moderating during the day (after an early morning pass forum by forum) via My Forums Threads.

Unfortunately Microsoft has now set up a second set of (SharePoint) forums for the 2010 products so I am having a problem caused by forums with similar names being in the same My Forums Threads set.

If I could set up a second set, my problem would be solved.

One of the possible solutions for me would be if it were possible to amend one or more of the functions listed in My Forum Links.

I never use My Forums so linking that item to a second set of forums (i.e. the My Forums Threads 2) would solve the problem.

It doesn't seem very likely to happen but there is at least a genuine reason for the request and is the request one that other people would be happy to use if available I'm sure.

I'm trying to configure email router for Microsoft Dunamics CRM. But when I'm clicking the Load Data button under the Users, Queues and Forward mail boxes tab I'm getting the following error message.

The E-mail Router Configuration Manager was unable to retrieve user and queue information from the
Microsoft Dynamics CRM server. This may indicate that the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server is busy.
Verify that URL 'http://<IP Address>:<port number>/<Organization Name>/' is correct. Additionally, this problem can occur
if specified access credentials are insufficient. To try again, click Load Data. (The request failed
with HTTP status 404: Not Found.)

Here my port number is 8083.
If I copy this URL and paste in the browser, the site is opening.

Please suggest me to resolve this error.

This new Navigation system is really bad.. Although, I am logged in, if I try to post a question on Server 2003 Forum, it takes me "Home" to my Login information. I wind up going around in circles- AND CANNOT POST. While I'm on the subject of annoying attributes, in my personal profile, when I tried to select an Avatar, the browse window will NOT show folders on my Desktop (I also tried to reach it via My Computer- C:\documents & Settings\MyName\Desktop\) Nope, that didn't work either... So far this new design isn't working for me at all...

Sometimes we hit the wrong button and hit Propose as Answer instead of Quote. Can you add a feature where you can unpropose Answer on posts you proposed the answer on instead of waiting for a mod to come around and unpropose it for you?

Is anybody else experiencing this? Select 'My threads' and then use the 'Sort by' feature to try ordering the results in accordance with most recent post, and the sorting is all higgledy-piggledy. I'm seeing threads for which the most recent post was only an hour ago display after threads for which the most recent post was days ago. If I instead try to order results by most recent thread it's again all mixed up.

Database corruption? Maintenance work going on? What's the matter!

Kinda inconvenient if you're trying to keep track of thread you are participating in and trying to assist people in, if you are relying upon the web interface to keep you informed of new comments added.

Editing signature suggestions

I would like to see on the "My Settings" page where you edit your signature two things:

1. Disclaimer that says that the sig uses HTML code and what tags and attributes of the tags (like the target attribute of the "a" tag is not supported) are supported, so that for example newbies know that pressing Enter wont linebreak the sig, but that they have to use <br />.

2. Live preview of signature so we can preview what it will look like, so we don't have to post random posts to see if we liked the changes or if we missed a change (as I have done that once or twice...).

window 7 and projection problem

The projector have two connection coming out RGB (Direct VGA Connection to Laptop) and BNC (Have a adapter to convert BNC to VGA Connector) When we connect BNC (Have a adapter to convert BNC to VGA Connector) to laptop we are not able to see anything on projection screen and on window xp BNC and RGB Connection is working properly. But RGB Connection works without any problem on window 7. Any idea why it is not working with BNC?.
