Monday, May 07, 2012 9:06 PMI'm working on a large unmanaged c++ app that relies heavily on sqlserver express. We're using 2008 R2. I understand that DMO has been deprecated and should not be used in new development. Is PowerShell the replacement for DMO? Can it be called from unmanaged code? Thanks, Vince W.

Monday, May 07, 2012 10:10 PMWhat I actually need to do is enumerate the sql server instances of a machine on the local network, once a machine has been selected by a user. I'm not finding an unmanaged alternative to DMO, might a possible workaround be to query the chosen network machine's registry and get the sql server instance name(s)/location(s) from there? What is the official Microsoft recommendation for my situation?

BTW - I should have edited the original post instead of answering. If that's where those 10 points came from, and anybody's watching, go ahead and take those points away.

According to your description and Sheng Jiang's reply, I'd like to move this thread to SQL Server SMO/DMO Forum for better support.
Thanks for your understanding.
