SQL Full Text Search service

I am attempting to get Team Foundation Server 2008 working on the latest build of Windows Server 2008 (from Monday on Connect) along with the November build of SQL Server 2008.

When installing SQL Server 2008, I told it to go ahead and install all components, making sure that the Full Text Search was one of them. After that install finished successfully, I started the install for TFS2008, and it reported that the SQL Full Text Search service is not installed. I loaded up the Sql Server Configuration Manager, and I am not seeing it listed under the Services, as I am under the impression that it should belong there. I also checked the service listing within Windows, services.msc, and it is also absent from there.

Is there something obvious I am missing, or did the SQL Server install misreport the "successful" install of the Full Text Search service? If this is the case, could someone point me in the correct direction so that I can install this feature? I am not familiar with SQL Server's command-line installation interface (which is required to add features in this CTP).

Cannot apply KB 932557 - receiving Error Code: 0x2C24

I keep receiving an update notification for KB 932557 and when I try to apply the fix, it fails. Checking update history tells me error code 0x2c24 is the reason for failure.

I cannot find any help on this error code anywhere.

Any help most appreciated.

Can't Uninstall SQL Server 2005 Express Tools

I am attempting to install SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Trial and receive the follow error during installation.

"The SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed. To continue, remove the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools."

I have used Add or Remove programs to remove all components of SQL Server 2005 Express. I have even reinstalled the Workstation Tools of SQL Server 2005 just so I could indiviually remove those tools, and then completly removed the SQL 2005 installation.

I have used regedit to search for any instance of SQL Server 2005, there is none.

There is still an entry for SQL Server Mangement Express in my all programs listing. However trying to launch that program fails with errors, so it is partial still installed.

Can anyone tell me how to wipe out these last bits of SQL Server 2005 Express Tools? I have tried everything I have found searching this forum to no avail.

I am using SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP. I am also going to buy a Technet subscription soon, which I assume will have SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise or Developer Edition (this software is used for evaluation/non commercial purposes such as for learning during my exam revision). Anyway, is it possible to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 CTP to the final release?

Hi there,

I've just performed a fresh install of both Windows Server 2008 Standard and SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition for Small Business. At the end of the SQL Server installation I'm getting the above installation rule failure.

I've seen the installation requirements detailed here: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/small-business.aspx , and as far as I can tell we are not violating any of them.

We have a single server set up to perform ActiveDirectory on a single domain for about 50 employees.

Is there a way to find out precisely what is causing the problem?

Maintenance Plan Changes in SQL Server 2005 SP2

Users of SQL Server 2005 maintenance plans should be aware of a change in SP2 that affects existing cleanup tasks until updated using SQL Server SP2 tools.

Who is affected?

You are affected if you use SQL Server 2005 maintenance plans, those plans include a History Cleanup Task or a Maintenance Cleanup Task, and you install SQL Server 2005 SP2. Users of SQL Server 2000 legacy maintenance plans are not affected.

What is the issue?

Some maintenance plans might include the Maintenance Cleanup Task and the History Cleanup Task, which allow users to delete information older than a specified interval. When SQL Server 2005 was released, this interval was measured in days, weeks, months, or years. In response to customer feedback, SQL Server 2005 SP2 includes significant enhancements to maintenance plans, including an enhancement that allows users to specify the cleanup interval in hours. After upgrading to SP2, and until you update cleanup tasks using SQL Server SP2 tools as described below, existing cleanup task intervals are misinterpreted. This leads to earlier data cleanup than was intended.

What if I have already installed SP2 on my server?

You can restore your maintenance plans to their former behavior by opening them up in the Maintenance Plan Designer, opening any cleanup tasks, adjusting the age units to the proper value, and saving the maintenance plan. Use SQL Server 2005 SP2 tools to make these changes.

What if I haven't yet installed SP2 on my server?

We are currently investigating our approach to this problem and will provide guidance shortly. If you depend on the Maintenance Cleanup Task or the History Cleanup Task and are not able to verify and possibly update cleanup tasks using matching server and tool versions, you may want to wait for that guidance before installing SP2.

I downloaded a file named "Microsoft Office 2010 Beta", while installing I have error message that:
Installation connot be proceed due to the following error(s):
The installation of Microsoft Office 2010 requies that MSXML version 6.101129.0 be installed on your computer. Install this component and re-run setup.
Correct the issue(s) listed above and re-run setup.

And when i try download and install MSXML 6.10.129.0 in my system its giving me other message that:
this installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

plzzzzzzzzz. i need the best solution for installing Beta 2010, or any other way of installing it.

i've done a side-by-side migration from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008, and i want to migrate the Maintenance plans too, i've got success migrating the jobs, but i didn't find any way to migrate the plans...

I already tried through Integration Services > MSDB > Export, and it succeed, but when i try to import, if just doesn't work at all.

Win 7 x64, SQL Server 2008 -- problem accessing DB

Hello,

I installed SQL Server 2008 on a new Windows 7 installation. (I believe I finally used the Web Platform Installer to get SQL Server Management Studio installed.)

Using Mangement Studio, I attached a .mdf file. When I try to access the db from an application, I get this error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open database "database001" requested by the login. The login failed.
Login failed for user 'serverName\userName'.

In Management Studio, I have made my login a user of the db, and I think I have given my login all the necessary privileges to access the db.
What am I overlooking?

(I am assuming 64-bit SQL Server was installed. Could that be the problem? How do I confirm what version, with which service pack, is installed?)

I've tried running a Slipstreamed version with SP1 (http://blogs.msdn.com/petersad/archive/2009/02/25/sql-server-2008-creating-a-merged-slisptream-drop.aspx) but the same error occurs.

How can I solve this? My goal is to install this and Sharepoint 2010 beta but I can't get past this.

I have tried to install SQL Server 2008. I cannot install, because I get the errormessage the prerequistite "Restart the computer is required".

But every time I restart my computer and try to execute the setup of SQL Server 2008, I get the same message, I have to restart the computer.

I Installed a SQL Server 2008 from Downloading Internet, Now I'm facing Removing that. When I'm trying remove SQL 2008 following message comes always. "This installation package can't be installed by the windows installer service. You must install a windows service pack that contains a newer version of the windows installer service"

upgrade sql2000 to sql2005

I'm upgrading sql 2000 to sql 2005 before I upgrade GP 9 to GP 10. I ran the sql server 2005 upgrade advisor and the advisor reports that Existing Meta Data Services packages should be moved to SQL Server storage (in the msdb database) or to structured storage files before you upgrade. SQL Server 2005 does not install support for SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services; therefore the Package Migration Wizard will be unable to access Meta Data Services packages after upgrade in the absence of the SQL Server 2000 Client Tools.

I opened Enterprise Manager, Click Data Transformation Services, Click Meta Data and receive the following error: An error occurred while trying to access the database information. The msdb database could not be opened.

Please advise how I can get past this error to proceed with the upgrade.

I have no DTS packages.

Failure to install Sql Server 2008 "access is denied"

I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 RC0 but the installation is failing giving error message as "Access is denied".

The installation was performed on a new system having no previous SQL database installed.All the other components of SQL server 2008 were installed except the Database Engine Services.

I recently re-built my laptop by restoring it to the factory image. I then attempted to install SQL Server 2008 Developers and it was a completely successful installation, which included Reporting Servers and Report Manager.

I downloaded the version I needed for my system and now I can not access it. I can find my instances and it says that the program is running but there is nothing for me to click on to start 2008. I removed 2005 but that did not help. Please help. I also had the same problem with Java. I have a 32 bit Windows Vista system. I was trying to download the32 bit express version but if there is a 32 bit Enterprise trial version I would like a link to that. I need this for school so any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. I also need the Java JDK for school so if I can kill two birds with one stone it would be nice. Thanks in advance.

I'm reinstalling MS-SQL 2008 Express on Windows 7, and it keeps failing. It says something with the compatibility issue at the beginning of the installation, but of course I'd have to install SP1 after I installed the program, I tried to install SP1 anyway, but still failed on the installation. I tried to use "Repair", but it keeps saying that it's not a valid installation folder (I don't know why it does that!)

SQL Server 2008 SP1 install fails on Windows 7

I've seen other posts about problems with SQL 2008 SP1, but my symptoms appear different, so I'm creating a new post...

I installed SQL Server 2005 + SP3 as a named instance on my newly-installed Windows 7 system (previously running XP, but wiped clean b4 Win7 install). No errors.

I then installed SQL Server 2008 as a named instance from MSDN disc 2436.38 (July 2009). No errors.

I then tried to install SQL Server 2008 SP1, and it ran for quite a while and then got the errors below (in Summary_xxxx.txt file under Setup Bootstrap).

Where is the "log file" that I should review?  I found one named Detail.txt in Setup Bootstrap, but it's huge, and I have no idea what I'm looking for in it.

BTW: Programs and Features now shows SQL 2008 SP1 as having been installed; no indication that there was an error during the SP1 upgrade.

So far, I'm discouraged by the experience of rebuilding my XP dev system as Win7. Almost every major Microsoft product (Office, Visual Studio and now SQL Server) which installed/ran OK under XP has had problems. My guess is that the REAL bulk of the migration from XP has only now just begun, and all the things that didn't get discovered by the tiny number of users who moved to Vista are just now being seen (I wonder what % of developers moved from XP to Vista... I bet it's a smaller percentage than the general population).   So far, it appears that other vendors did a better job of preparing their apps for Win7 than did Microsoft.

Can't install SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise

I am using WIndows (64 bit). I installed the Wampserver in order to test my php programs. I already Have Visual Studio 2008 installed. I then installed SQL Server 2008 and now I can't use the Wampserver. This happened in XP also, but I was able to disable IIS (which was looking to control port 80 just as Apache was doing in Wampserver). So my question is...I never installed IIS...Did the installation of SQL Server 2008 do it for me and if so, how do I +disbale/enable it so I can use both IIS and Apache for testing purposes? Hi,

I am running Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition R2 x64 and I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition. All of the preliminary checks run fine (Apart from a warning about Windows Firewall and opening ports which is unrelated to this and shouldn't be an issue - I can open those ports).

Half way through the actual installation, I get a popup with this error:

Could not continue scan with NOLOCK due to data movement.

The installation still runs to completion when I press ok.

However, at the end, it states that the following services "failed":

database engine services sql server replication full-text search reporting services

How do I know if this actually means that anything from my installation (which is on a clean Windows Server setup - nothing else on there, no previous SQL Servers, no upgrades, etc) is missing?

I know from my programming experience that locks are for concurrency control and the Microsoft help on this issue points to changing my query's lock/transactions in a certain way to fix the issue. But I am not touching any queries?

Also, now that I have installed the app, when I login, I keep getting this message:

I went into the Configuration Manager and enabled named pipes and restarted the service (this is something I have done before as this message is common and not serious). I have disabled Windows Firewall temporarily. I have checked the instance name against the error logs.

Please advise on both of these errors.

I'm trying to upgrade from SQL Server 2000 to 2005. The problem I am having is that when I try to attach the existing db files I get a message that says "database cannot be upgraded because it is read only or has read only files...."

Thing is... there is no write protection on the files.

Can anyone advise me on how to overcome this problem so that I can attach the db, please?

Hello,

I´m trying to install SQL Server 2005 from a network drive. I do however get an error reading "Could not find a package to install on the installation media". According to Microsoft support this problem occurs because a Sqlrun_*.msi file in the Setup folder on the SQL Server 2005 Setup media is corrupted. And to fix the problem i need to download the setup media again, and then run the Setup program.

My coworkers claim they used the same files to install SQL Server 2005 succesfully only a week ago. My question is could there be another reason for this problem than a corrupted msi file?

Edition Upgrade not Supported - SQL Server 2008 Enterprise

I currently have SQL Server 2005 ENTERPRISE edition installed, I went to try and upgrade to SQL Server 2008 Enterprise however, I didn't look carefully enough at the top of the disk because of that missed the "STANDARD" label on it. Fair enough I thought, so I closed the install and exited out. I then went into Control Panel and removed the 2008 SQL Setup files entry that existed there.

I then rebooted.

Once back in, I popped in the 2008 SQL ENTERPRISE disk and proceeded through the upgrade menus. However, it failed once again telling me that the edition upgrade was not supported. I was completely baffled because I knew I was going from Enterprise to Enterprise. I looked at detail.txt file that get's created and it says:

"2009-11-24 11:30:52 Slp: -- SkuPublicConfigObject : ValidateSkuMatrix checking sku matrix for sourceVersion=9.0 sourceEdition=ENTERPRISE sourceArchitecture=X86 targetEdition=STANDARD targetArchitecture=X86"

Is there something that was set in the registry that is holding this information and causing me to not be able to proceed forward?

Is it safe to uninstall SQL Server, and then immediately install another version in exactly the same installation path?

Hi,

I am planning on installing SQL Server and now trying SQL Server 2008 R2 (though time limited, and the download page for SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition doesn’t seem to initiate the download). If I uninstall SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition x64 but not touch the original installation directory afterwards (as it doesn’t get deleted in the installation) and then install SQL Server 2008 R2 in the exact same program directory, would this work fine? There may be some left over files in the original directory. Are there any catches?

Trouble Installing Cumulative Update 2 to SQL Server 2008 SP1, Hotfix KB958186

I have been trying to apply CU2 to my MS SQL 08 which is SP1, version 10.0.2531.0

1) I got the hotfix (SQLServer2008-KB958186-x64.exe) from Microsoft and extract it to my C: drive.

2) I double click to open SQLServer2008-KB958186-x64.exe and it does extracts a folder to my e drive.

3) Program entitled "Install a SQL Server Patch" opens up.

4) I click oK

5) I accept the license terms

6) On the select features page, I can't select/unselect any features, so I click ok.

7) Then I get a error window that tells me to check to see what are the validation error.

8) The error I get is "There are no SQL Server instances of shared features that can be updated on this computer.".

I'm stuck. WHat do I do now?

Upgrade 2005 to 2008 - How to handle MSDB to retain scheduled jobs and maintenance plans?

I am planning an upgrade/migration from SQL Server 2005 SP3 to SQL Server 2008 and I am having trouble finding out how to deal with the maintenance plans and scheduled jobs. The SQL Server 2008 server will be on new hardware, so this is NOT an in-place upgrade.

Will I be able to move over the MSDB database to the new server, attach or restore it into 2008, and have the scheduled jobs and maintenance plans intact? If not, can I use a database synchronization tool to copy over the relevant data?

Would it be better to upgrade in-place, and then move the upgraded files over to the new server? I read that an in-place upgrade will retain the existing maintenance plans and scheduled jobs.

Deadlocks on SQL Server

Hi,
I am new to SQL Server Administration. We moved a 90 gig DB from old (windows 2000 server with sql 2000) to the new server (windows 20003 server with sql 2000 sp4). Everything works fine on the old server but after I moved the DB to the new server, few queries are failing.

The issue is with a complex query having almost 60 + selects and 60 + union alls to get the data from a single table with 60 different where clauses and group by clauses. It throws the following error:

Transaction (Process ID: 51) was deadlocked on thread. Communication buffer resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.

Can some one please help me with this. Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi,

I have a server with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3 installed. Now I want to upgrade to the SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.
When I try to do a upgrade in-place the setup can not continue because the installed version (SP3) is higher than the version (RTM) that I have.
I only have the Standard 2005 RTM media and I did not find a slipstreamed version.

Can I do a upgrade in-place in this situation? If so, what is the procedure?

Cannot copy field names in column headings from view results

When I am using a SQL Query I have an ability to control whether or not I am able to Include the Column Headers when copying or saving results.

The control exists in the Options > Query Results > Results to Grid > Include column headings etc.

My question is how to get this same ability when attempting to copy the results of a VIEW vs. a Query.

The idea is that when I setup a view it’s a drag/drop type of query building (query building for dummies if you will). Once I have a view and click the Execute icon it will return all the records selected by the View. However, when I click the upper left/top box to select all rows and column and then try to copy/paste the records into Excel all the data copies just fine but the field name/column headers are not there.

How can I get the header fieldname date to copy/paste from View result set that I'm able to copy from a Query result set?
