Upgrade to SQL Server 2012 failed on VS 2010 - how do I fix this?
-
Monday, March 11, 2013 12:01 AM
I have just updated the installation of SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition on my PC to SQL Server 2012 Developer. During the process, a small dialogue box popped up asking me to insert a VS2010 CD. I was running VS2010 at the time and did not relate this dialogue box to the SS2012 installation. I therefore cancelled the dialogue box.
However, it became clear later that a VS2010-related part of the SQL Server 2012 had failed. Everything else was fine.
My problem is that that I have no idea how to fix that failure. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hello,
SP1 for VS2010 is required before upgrading to SQL Server 2012.Could you please share the summary.txt log file with us? The following article may help you locate this file on disk:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702(v=sql.110).aspx
Hope this helps.

Hi haggis,
When you install SQL Server 2012 and Visual Studio 2010 side-by-side, I think you could follow the steps below:
1. Install visual studio 2010, turn off "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Service Pack"
2. Install visual studio 2010 Service Pack 1.
3. Install SQL Server 2012.If it failed, please post the error messages in %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log\.
If you have any feedback on our support, please click here.
Thanks.

Hi Alberto,
Here are the Summary.txt file contents, as requested:EDIT: This Summary.txt file may not be useful. I made several attempts to find a way to fix my problem by re-running the SQL Server installation process and then cancelling when I found it was not going to do what I wanted. As there appears to be only one Summary.txt file I am guessing it only covers the most recent aborted installation. However, I do have no less than 7 dated log file folders from yesterday evening!

Hi Ahmed,
Your blog post starts with the statement "In some situation during SQL server setup access to VS media is required, if the media is not there then SQL setup may be blocked, here is workaround for this situation".In my case, cancelling the request for VS 2010 media did not appear to stop the SQL Server installation process. I appear to have all the expected items in the Start menu on my PC and I have already used SSMS 2012 without any problem. My only known problem was the warning that some aspect of the installation relating to VS 2010 had failed (and VS 2010 fails to open a SQL Server 2012 database). That is what I need help to fix.

More than one person has mentioned SP1 for VS 2010. My Windows Update log shows that this was installed in November 2011. However, I was prompted to install an update to SP1 some time yesterday evening (I can't now remember if this was before or after my SQL Server 2012 installation).
I am assuming that none of this is really relevant as the 'preflight checks' all showed my machine as being ready for the SQL Server 2012 update.

Hi Ahmed,
I have just tried running a 'Repair' installation via Control Panel but it asked for the VS 2010 CD. I couldn't find such a CD among my collection, probably because I think I installed VS 2010 Pro via a download. Obviously, it was some time ago so my memories are a little vague. I tried using the VS 2010 Pro disk that came with my MSDN subscription but this was not accepted.Any suggestions for when I try again tomorrow (it's bedtime here in the UK)?

Ahmed,
Before reading your post this morning I had already realised your blog was now relevant to my current situation. I have now completed a repair installation of VS 2010 using the download option (this took ages because I only have a 6Mbps broadband connection). The result was "Setup Maintenance completed successfully, however there were some warnings were detected" (the grammatical error belongs to MS, not me!). There were 6 obscure warning messages, all similar to "Warning: Missing fwlink entry for cabinet: #GDR.cab".VS 2010 seems to be working normally but I still have no ability to run any Views contained in a SQL Server 2012 database. I just get a message stating that 'This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 are supported'. Where do I go from here?
David
