Question

hi i tried to install sql server but i keep recieving error message:''SQL Server Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. The error was [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Cannot add functional unit 'sp_sqlagent_get_startup_info' to component 'Agent XPs'. This unit has been already registered with the component.Refer to the server error logs and Setup logs for detailed error information.''
any ideas how i can fix this???

Probably there's a broken installation on the system? Is there any chance you format the disk and reinstall OS and other stuff? Or uninstall any other SQL Server installation and try to reinstall from scratch?

thanks for the suggestion last time and sorry for my late reply!!
i tried the link u suggested and i did everything he said but now the error msg is changed it says" The Sql server failed to start. For maore information, see the Sql server books online topics,"how to :view SQL server setup log files" and "starting SQL server manually." and this is the former error message. i mean when i first tried to install sql this was the error message and i know the steps that eliminate this message but it doesnt seem to work anymore so do u have any suggestions??

Hi,

This problem probably dues to previous installation failure, so make sure you have uninstalled all SQL related components before reinstall in the second time.

Usually we can uninstall SQL Server from Add and Remove Programs/Programs and Features, and then we can uninstall it. But sometimes, we cannot uninstall all things of SQL Server, so please run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility here to remove installation information.

Install system requirement programs to make installation succeeded.

hi   
thank you for z suggestions. i did as u suggested above. i uninstall all sql related components and i cleaned up the disk but when i tried to install it again it says " The Sql server failed to start. For more information, see the Sql server books online topics,"how to :view SQL server setup log files" and "starting SQL server manually." the same problem as before.if you have any other ideas please let me know.

Hi,

Have the installation media been broken or something? What did setup log files say?

Make sure you have installed Windows Installer 4.5, .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, Windows Powersheel before installation.

hi again
no the installation media is not broken. i installed the same SQL to another laptop which is the same as this one before sometime.actually both the laptops were bought on the same day at the same place.but i couldnt install one while the other were installed without any difficulties. do you think may be the problem is on the pc itself??the setup logfiles says like this.

Hello,

Please run the Windows Installer Cleanup utility. See the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

After running the utility, re-run SQL Server setup again.

Hi Jozna,

I am suggesting you install SQL Server not selecting SQL Agent feature, after installed, and then try to add that feature. If you get any errors, please feel free to let us know.
