SQL Server 2008 Setup Failure (Win 7 x64): MSI Error: 1935 An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.42",type="win32",processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"'.

Question

I've been banging my head on this for a couple of days now.  Any help would be much appreciated.

I have tried various versions of SQL 2008, tried uninstalling all installed VC runtimes, but nothing seems to have an effect.

Running Win 7 x64 Ultimate

It seems you need permissions to modify the registry, especially on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key.

Also, please verify you have the “Server” service started on that machine.

Go to Control Panel ->  Administrative Tools -> Services.

I solved this issue by manually installing the referenced version of VC80, x.x.x.42.

Glad it helped someone.  I ended up reinstalling in the end though, as Ultimate is far more bloated than I would like.  Win 7 pro is just right.
