SQL 2012 RTM setup problems

Hi everyone, I hope I can find some help on my SQL 2012 RTM Developer Ed. (x64) install. I downloaded the ISO from my MSDN subscription, extracted to a common location, and copied the extracted files to my newly-built Dev server (specifications below). I ran the setup once but had to exit because I had to change the drive letters for some of the local drives. I rebooted, re-ran setup, and now I get an error:
setup.exe - Bad Image
c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer 2012\resources\1033\setup.rll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
Then a second error:
SQL Server Setup
The English-language version of SQL Server is not supported by this SQL Server media.. User the matching language-specific SQL Server media; or install the language specific MUI, and change the format and system locales through the regional settings in the control panel.
Server specs:
Windows 2008 R2 Standard; 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
Location United States
VMware Tools 8.6.0 build-515842
Ideas of what to look for next are welcomed... Thanks in advance! --Allison

Hello,
Try burning the ISO into a DVD and install from there. Try also to download and extracting the ISO again. For more workarounds, please see the following resource:

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Alberto. I still have no luck. I tried mounting the ISO directly in VMware, and I still immediately get the errors above when setup.exe runs. I also tried setting my locale to something else (UK) and setting it back to US, but still the same situation.
I am re-downloading from MSDN, but it looks like the same file I had earlier--en_sql_server_2012_developer_edition_x86_x64_dvd_813280.iso.
If the new ISO download doesn't work, I will try to uninstall SQL 2012 and re-install from the newly downloaded ISO. I'll post again after that and let you know how it goes.

the download page for SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition contains a checksum.
verify that your downloaded ISO has the same checksum to detect download errors.
in addition read the following KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2449398/en-us
and try the fix
Rename the Setup.rll file in the following folder to Setup.rll_old, and then rerun the setup:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2008R2\resources\1033
substitute the path your your installation for SQL 2012.

The new downloaded ISO to a local drive presented the same problem.
I uninstalled the SQL Server 2012 Setup in Control Panel and rebooted. I then ran a checksum verify against my original ISO download. It was successful (checksum matched with MSDN). BTW, I found great instructions for the process here: http://thesqldude.wordpress.com/tag/iso/
I'm currently reinstalling from the original ISO, mounted via VMware, which so far has progressed well. I'll update the post again after I finished install and verify that the new instance is functional.

The reinstall worked, and to really test I did an uninstall and reinstall several times with the ISO. Everything worked.
And then I tried to reinstall with the extracted files, and it progressed through the setup and errored on Reporting Services and everything after that (portions of setup log below). Now, I can't uninstall it! And when I try to re-run setup I get the errors I got above. Something in the first install attempt went badly, and now the setup is corrupted. (Good thing this is a dev server that I can reimage.)
I hope there is a fix for extracting the ISO... I used WinZip 12.1. If there are version issues I would like to know... We use the extracted files to customize SQL installations for our environment.
Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions.

Hello,
Please try with WinRAR instead of Winzip. See the following post:

Hope this helps.

Tuesday, March 27, 2012 2:04 PMThanks, Alberto! WinRAR worked. I will have to research whether the current version of WinZip also gives me a corrupted extraction.

Monday, April 23, 2012 4:11 PMI had the same problem when extracting the file via WinZip. However, even after creating a physical DVD instead, I could not get setup to run. I finally managed it by manually copying the setup.rll file from the DVD to the folder in c:program files mentioned in the error message (after renaming the corrupt original).

Hi Allison,
If WinRAR worked, note down the specific version of WinRAR which you used and use the same version in future. I mention this because, I have seen it not working as well. In fact this goes for Winzip or any other ISO extracting tools. As a general practice I would strongly suggest validating the downloaded ISO using the steps mentioned here. It takes about 5 minutes and saves you days of headache.
