Hi
I've done lots of searching, but unable to find a solution to this issue. I followed http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.105).aspx which indicates the Sql server 2008 R2 should work with Server 2008 x64 Standard R2 & I've done the .NET Framework 3.5 using Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn On/Off features. When I go through the installation, just after entering the product key, I choose only database server, and get a fail on the next screen "This OS not supported" ???
Can anyone offer any advice, the error message regarding SBS doesn't make sense since this is Windows 2008 R2 Standard, non SBS.
I've included log files below which hopefully can help...
thanks for ANY advice, really really stuck now.
Thanks
Jonathan

Hello,
SQL Server Standard for Small Business should be installed. Please see the following article about the requirements to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition for Small Business:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/joaol/archive/2011/07/11/sql-server-2008-r2-setup-failing-on-windows-2008-r2-sbs.aspx
Hope this helps.Regards,

Hi Alberto
This is a bit of a shock, as I've just spent $700 on something I can't return, because its now open? Is there anyway it would load on the Server 2008 R2 OS that is running now, for example if I remove domain function from this machine, or add another role, would it install?
If there is that option I will just do that.
I don't understand why this product isn't supported on Windows Server 2008 standard edition R2, and why the "SBS" version is needed?
What verion of windows would this SQL 2008 Standard Edition R2 run on?
Can you shed some light on it?
Thanks
Jonathan

Steps to diagnose "Operating system supported for edition" for Small Business
From Requirements for Installing SQL 2008 Standard Edition for Small Business,
"The SQL setup must be run while logged in to the domain with valid domain credentials. The user needs to have domain administrator and local administrator rights."

Hi Anuragsh
I've tried running the installer as Administrator, and a domain user who has domain domain administrators, and administrators. That should be sufficient?
Thanks for the help

Hello,
I know you can install Express Edition, but all licensed editions of SQL Server will fail to install with the same failed rule.
My recommendation is to call Microsoft Licensing and see if they can allow you to return the open box and be able to obtain in return SQL Server Standard for SBS. You can call Microsoft Licensing at 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time).
Hope this helps.

Thanks Alberto for the number.
If you know, can you answer this:
The install is failing because of :
a. I have Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 - SBS
b. I have Windows Server 2003 Standard R2
c. Because I have it as a domain controller
?
thanks

Hello,
Small Business Server is especial because it allows you to have a domain controller, an Exchange Server, SQL Server, SharePoint , etc. on the same box. All editions of SQL Server have issues with domain controllers, they are not recommended on domain controllers, but SQL Server Standard for Small Business is created to work on that special environment.
SQL Server setup is just avoiding you to install an edition of SQL Server that will lead you to problems on a SBS domain/environment.
Hope this helps. I hope this is the answer you are looking for.

Hey Alberto
That is - thanks. So I presume if I remove the domain role (unjoin domain) from this machine, and have it as a 'standalone' WORKGROUP machine it will load ok ? If so that would be so execellent!
Thanks,
Jonathan

Hello,
All editions of SQL Server will work great if you install them on a Windows Server (non-SBS) that is part of a workgroup.Yes, remove the server from the SBS domain, and try to install SQL Server again.
However, you may have to use SQL Server authentication to connect from applications on the SBS domain.
Hope this helps..

Hi Alberto
No luck with MSFT licensing, Still need the domain. I found something very interesting (option "C" below) - So I either need a. Windows 2008 R2 SBS, or B. SQL 2008 R2 "non SBS" edition, Or C. One of these conditions must be met:
If the operating system is Windows Server 2008 Standard, then:
1. Windows Server 2008 Standard must be joined to a domain2. The domain and other domain does not exist a trust relationship
3. The domain cannot have any sub-domain
4. The domain users and equipment the sum of not more than 75
5. Customers can not be in the same serial number of the SQL Server software running in the domain of other operating systems
If these conditions are not met, then we will run into the operating system does not support error as you got. You maybe use Windows Server 2008 Standart instead of as Sean mentioned.
We do have more than 75 users/equipment, which I have reduced to less than 75.
Do you know if this is still valid and maybe just taking time for it to 'refresh' ?
info from: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/tr/tr/small-business.aspx
states clearly Windows 2008 Standard....
thanks for any advise going forward on this tricky subject! As you have pointed out my issue is I have Windows 2008 Standard x64 R2 non SBS, and SQL 2008 Standard R2 "SBS" - so one is SBS and the other is NOT.
It seems under very VERY special circumstance the SBS SQL 2008 R2 will work with NON SBS Server 2008 R2 if the specific domain criteria above is met, but I am still not meeting it sadly. Will double check things and report back.
Please let me know if there are any suggestions in the mean time as I'm stuck with this 'open box' of sql now... argh!.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Hello Jonathan,
To be able to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard for SBS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (non-SBS), the Windows server needs to be part of a SBS domain, and there is no SBS domain on your network.
Hope this helps.

Hi Alberto / everyone
Thank you very much for the help. Alberto, it might be something new for you as well - I wanted to post the final solution to get this working. In the end I had to perform the following to get SQL 2008 R2 SBS to install on my Win2008 Server R2 non SBS.
- remove secondary domain controller
- ensure all master fismo roles are on the single domain controller
- remove (clean up ) additional users & computers with in the domain which have been replaced over the years so the total number was under 75 (at about 60 right now).
- my domain is still at windows 2003 level (not 2008 or 2008 R2).
Upon this criteria, and re-running the setup for SQL 2008 R2, I was able to pass the OS check and proceed with the installation, which completed successfully!
I can post the logs if it would be helpful towards helping users in the future with similar issues.
Let me know if it is useful Alberto - and thanks again for the help.
