Hi Shwac,
I read your log file. All you need to perform is two steps as below :
1. From the Main setup (RTM version) of SQL Server , copy ...\Servers\Setup\SqlRun_SQL.msi and paste in C:\Windows\Installer. Rename it to c20712fa.msi
2. Extract SP2 on local disk say at C:\SQLSP2 , copy C:\SQLSP2\HotfixSQL\Files\sqlrun_sql.msp and paste it into C:\Windows\Installer. Rename it to c25a6684.msp

Tuesday, January 13, 2009 3:48 PMModeratorHi Shwac,
Can you try copying the disk down to your local machine? It looks like you're installing it from a UNC share, and I suspect that your Windows account doesn't have sufficient permissions on the network share.
Let us know how you fare!

Shwac,
Plese note I said to extract SP2 ; not SP3 because msp file of SP2 is missing.
Go to command prompt and locate the exe of SP2 (can be downloaded here) and extract using with "/x" or "/extract" something like below:
C:\SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-x86-ENU.exe /x
Extract it to a folder say C:\SQLSP2 and do as I stated in previous post.

Hi !
Ok it's working, setup install more components and fail on these components: "Client Component" and "Integrations services"
I can see these messages in summary.txt (I don't have the same verbose log like precedent message):
Product : Integration Services
Product Version (Previous): 3042
Product Version (Final) :
Status : Failure
Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\DTS9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_dts.msp.log
Error Number : 1635
Error Description : Unable to install Windows Installer MSP file
Product : Client Components
Product Version (Previous): 3042
Product Version (Final) :
Status : Failure
Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQLTools9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_tools.msp.log
Error Number : 1635
Error Description : Unable to install Windows Installer MSP file
do I have to rename these files also ?
When I will install the service pack on other servers, are the files will be renamed as well?
Thanks a lot.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 6:42 PMHi Shwac,
That's great news. Well, as far as SSIS and Tools are concerned, if you post the verbose log for both then only I will be able to comment.
You should have the log files for above two as :
1. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\DTS9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_dts.msp.log
2. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQLTools9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_tools.msp.log
On other servers , you don't need to paste/rename the files unless you hit the same error.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 7:47 PMHi,
I found information to rename msi and msp files in the verbose log...
I will try to install and let you know if it works.
Is this a known installation bug ? It's not a good idea to cancel and retry setup on a production server to rename installation files...
thanks a lot for your help. -
Wednesday, January 14, 2009 9:51 PMShwac,
That's not a bug. The reason you hit this error is because cached msp/msi files are missing from %windir%\Installer.

Thursday, January 15, 2009 5:52 PMHi,
It's working, thanks a lot for you help
Probably that all the files in this directory (\Windows\Installer) have been deleted, so files for SP2 were missing.

Hi Shwac,
I read your log file.

Hello Prashant, your solution provided to extract "sqlrun_sql.msp" worked great. However, the file I need and cannot locate is the "SqlRun_SQL.msi" - where/how can I get this file? My problem is similar that Windows Installer cannot locate that particular file.Thank you,
Van
