    Hi all.

I'm having a problem running an in place upgrade of SQL Server 2005 x64 Enterprise to 2008 R2 Enterprise.

When I run setup.exe and choose "upgrade", I am able to upgrade all components apart from the database engine. I am not given the option to select an instance prior to this. I have ensured that "x64" is selected from the bottom "options" tab on the initial setup screen. My current installed version of SQL is definitely 2005 x64 Enterprise, I have checked this with @@version and in the general properties of the Management Studio.

The strange thing is that if I select "x86" from the bottoms tab in SQL setup I AM able to select the 2005 instance, which lists the database engine as something it will upgrade in the next screen. Obviously I have not proceeded with the upgrade as I feel something is wrong somewhere.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the x64 install to detect the 2005 instance and upgrade the database engine?

    Thanks

    Hello,

For sure the media is not 32-bit?

Let me think about other possibility …

The install media was downloaded from the MS site, it's 32bit and x64, selectable via "options" when installing.

It looks like the install is erroneously detecting the SQL engine as 32bit for some reason, but I cannot for the life of me see how.

    Hello,

Would you mind downloading the media again? Try to download one for 64-bit only.

    Hope this helps.

Hi, already tried this. And there isn't a separate x64 download for 2008 R2. You get both versions in one media set.

We were (are) on SQL SP2, so I've just tried to apply SP4. It failed on Database Services (but continued with the install).

Am I able to attach the summary.txt here, or just paste the contents in?

Also, the database engine update failure references another log file - same question for that.

    Thanks for the assistance.

I think I can sort the MSP not being found issue. I'll get that resolved, apply SP4, then try the upgrade to 2008 again. I'll revist this thread once I've attempted that.

Thanks for the assistance so far.

The location "e:\c292f3932dc59a2b3dc60f\HotFixSQL\Files\sqlrun_sql.msp" does not exists (the e: drive is completely empty). I have created this folder and copied the extracted sqlrun_sql.msp (from the SP4 download) to that location. The above errors still occur.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Just an update to this, with a view to closing the thread:

I couldn't figure out how to install SP4, and so could not perform an in place upgrade of SQL 2005. I went for a side by side upgrade, which worked as expected. So while I have not fixed the issue I have worked around it and will be removing the SQL 2005 instance from the server once the application tier is fully configured to use the 2008 instance.

    Thanks
