"SQL Server Browser service group does not exists. Check for earlier failures in the setup."

Thursday, January 13, 2011 9:47 PMDuring installation of SQL Server 2008 express I get the error "SQL Server Browser service group does not exists. Check
for earlier failures in the setup."
This prevents me from installing it completely it seems. After the install the SQL database service will not run.
In this case I'm attempting to install it so Autodesk Vault will install afterwards so the instance in question is
autodeskvault.
Please let me know what other information you need.

Hi,
In the setup summary, it states that you have already 2 instance of SQL Server 2005 instance. Is SQL Server Browser Service running properly before installing SQL Server 2008? Can you post the detail log file here as well ( C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20110113_125412\Detail.txt)?
Thanks,
Chunsong

Here is the log file requested. It's too large to just paste in here. 1.5MB of pure text.
Thanks again.
I know this issue is probably very serious but also very rare because when searching the only page other than what I've posted about this to come up is
some hungarian message board with no replies. -

Hi,
The link (http://www.mediafire/?rcn83xwwpxi47u8) cannot be accessiable here. And from the reference link, the error happens on a SBS 2003 domain controller. Are trying to install SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008? If this is the case, it is not surprise you get this error. SQL Server 2008 is not supported on Windows Server 2008 domain controller; even on Windows 2003 domain controller there are several limitations.
For more information, please see Installing SQL Server on a Domain Controller (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=SQL.100).aspx#DC_Support).

I've just found this thread. I'm having the same error installing an additional Windows SQL 2008 Standard x64 instance on a Windows 2008R2 Enterprise server.
The history of this server is that it was a Windows Server 2008 (not R2) Enterprise Server running as a domain controller for a while but was demoted quite a while ago. It has had 4 SQL instances installed. All are SQL 2008 Standard x64. These instances were installed when the server was a domain controller but they did continue to run successfully after the DC demotion.
It was upgraded to Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise last September. Today I have been trying to install a 5th instance of SQL Server 2008 Standard (not R2) and am receiving the error which started this thread. All of the other instances are running SP2.
The install fails but leaves the instance installed. I found this error in the system event log:
The SQL Server (RAISERSEDGE) service terminated with service-specific error %%17058.
I also found this error in the application event log:
.NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_64) - Failed to compile: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\dtsinstall.exe . Error code = 0x800700d8
Here is the contents of the install log:

Sadly, the only way I could get it to work was to blow away and reinstall the server.
Even then, I'm not sure it won't come back.
the only other place I saw this error before submitting this question was some hungarian message board and nobody responded to the poor guy in 3 years.

Vote As HelpfulDear Tim,
Thank you for posting here. This is Nathan from Partner Online Technical Community. Nice to meet you.
From the problem description, I know that we failed to install SQL Server 2008 Express.
If I misunderstand, please feel free to let me know.
I’d appreciate your time to post the log file in the forum and it does help us a lot. However we cannot guarantee the root cause only depending on the information which we have currently. Now in order to resolve the issue more efficiently, would you please help collect the following information?
l Please help check whether the local group, SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$servername exists or not.
l SQL Server 2008 installation log:
Locate the SQL Server 2008 installation folder. For example: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\LOG
Note: You can find the folder according to your actual installation location.
l Operation System Event Log:
1. Click "Start", click "Run", type "eventvwr.msc" (without quotation marks) and press the "Enter" key
2. In the left panel, right click ‘Application’ and choose ‘Save Log File As’
3. Type the File name and choose a location to save it
4. In the left panel, right click ‘System’ and do the same operations to save it
l Error Screenshot:
1. When the errors above occur, press PrintScreen (PrScrn) to capture a screenshot
2. From Start, click Run, enter MSPAINT in the Open box, and then click OK
3. Use Ctrl + V to paste the screen shot to the canvas
4. From the File menu, go to Save and save as a JPG file
Never mind. We needn’t check whether SQL Server Browser service group exists or not then. Now please help send the information which was mentioned in my last reply to the workspace first so that I can find some more clues. Additionally please help confirm whether we have installed SQL Server on this DC before.
The following is for your reference:
Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2008
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=SQL.100).aspx
Installing SQL Server on a Domain Controller
For security reasons, Microsoft recommends that you do not install SQL Server 2008 on a domain controller. SQL Server Setup will not block installation on a computer that is a domain controller, but the following limitations apply:
1. On Windows Server 2003, SQL Server services can run under a domain account or a local system account.
2. You cannot run SQL Server services on a domain controller under a local service account or a network service account.
3. After SQL Server is installed on a computer, you cannot change the computer from a domain member to a domain controller. You must uninstall SQL Server before you change the host computer to a domain controller.
4. After SQL Server is installed on a computer, you cannot change the computer from a domain controller to a domain member. You must uninstall SQL Server before you change the host computer to a domain member.
5. SQL Server failover cluster instances are not supported where cluster nodes are domain controllers.
6. SQL Server Setup cannot create security groups or provision SQL Server service accounts on a read-only domain controller. In this scenario, Setup will fail.
Hope these help.
Some of this may not make sense, but hopefully it helps.

Hi All,
Turn on the SQL Server Browser service using services.msc .
Uninstall failed install instance of SQL Server using the Programs and Features from Control Panel.
Reinstall SQL Server.

Friday, September 09, 2011 4:43 PMWe have a Windows 2008 R2 Std Domain Controller (plus 2 more Windows 2008 x86 domain controllers) that is acting also as a File server and SQL server for minor apps (WSUS, HPSIM, SEPM, Payroll, etc.).
I have just failed the install of SQL Express 2008 R2 instance (4th one). I used domain admin account in service startup settings during installation while all other former instances were installed on default settings ("NT Authority\SYSTEM" account if I remember correctly) and re-configured later.
In fact SQLexpress 2008 R2 installer leaves new instance account credentials empty during setup and only option the user can choose from is the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM from the drop down menu, note that whatever else you enter there will fail the setup. Kinda weird if you ask me.

I have tried running setup (Maintenance section) again and repairing failed instance, but that yielded only errors as the instance was never successfully installed in first place:

I used Control Panel - Programs and features to remove the failed instance (successful).
Then installed the same instance again, but this time using NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM account for credentials (and changing them later to a domain admin account being a member in SQL User group).
it worked like a charm :) -

Hello,
I faced with this error during installation the MS SQL Server 2008 R2 - 32 bit instance to 64 bit server. (There was also Default 64 bit SQL server installed here).
During installation I get an error:
"SQL Server Browser service group does not exists. Check for earlier failures in the setup."<//span>
Installation finished with error and if SQL Server Browser were stopped if it was started during installation. Also instance created with no access to it.
I try to install with different credentials for SQL Server Browser Service (During installation it is read only but changing the SQL Server Browser Service user from services affect it) But without result.
Then I solved this in this way:
Because of error message I look to server groups and how they have to be for normally.
Here for more information about groups.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504(v=sql.105).aspx
In this server there was a group named SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$WIN-ZBGDKKJKQPZ
Have to be (SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$machine_name)
The name of machine was NETSIS2K8.
I create a group name SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$ NETSIS2K8 and add to this group Network Service
After that the second 32 bit instance (2008 R2) installed successfully.
(I’m not sure I didn’t get error only because I create SQL Server Browser Group or I oblige to add the Network Service here.)
Hope it helps.
