have you installed .NET 3.5 SP1? it is required for the installation of SQL Server 2008.
are you trying to install RTM version of SQL Server 2008?
Try to install first Service Pack 3 for SQL Server 2008 as it does update the support files and avoiding some problems with the installation. After executing SP3 and installing the support files, you install SQL Server 2008 normally and after the installation you need to re-execute SP3 to apply the SP3 to the SQL Server 2008 installation.
Did you use .ISO download and extract the files with Winzip ? than you need to use WinRAR to extract the files as Winzip does not extract them correctly or burn to .ISO to a DVD or use a .ISO mount software. In addition it's recommand to copy the files to local disk and install from there.

thanks for replying mate....
I am installing a standard version sql 2008
i already have .net 3.5 framework installed and yes, it is required.
i am using a dvd-media to install sql server, there are no iso or zip files whatsoever
the problem iam facing is during installation that it says "Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL Server error log for potential causes."
I tried doing everything that's mentioned on the msdn forum related to my query
i have a small question here: are there any specific problems with installing sql server 2008 on windows vista
puneet

Hi Scrapy coco,
SQL Server 2008 Standard (32-bit) is supported in Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows Vista Business.
To resolve it, follow these steps:
When the installation throws this error, click on OK and allow it to proceed. It will fail for Database Engine, but the SQL Server service should have been created. Check the Services console.
If the service is present, perform the following steps:
1. Go to SQL Server Configuration manager, right click on the SQL Server service, and change the service account (if it is local system, give it a windows level account, and vice-versa). It might throw a WMI error but you will see the account getting updated anyway. If not, then use the Services console. Change the account for SQL Agent as well.
2. Next, try to start the service. It should come online.
3. However, you will not be able to log in to the SQL Server.
4. Now stop the service and start it from the command prompt using -m -c -T3608 parameters.
5. Now try logging in to the server using admin connection from sqlcmd (sqlcmd admin:<server name>\<instance name> ...)
6. Once logged in, use the sp_addsrvrolemember '<domain\username>','sysadmin'. Also add the builtin/administrators to the sysadmin role.
7. Now stop the service from the command prompt and start it from SQL Server configuration manager.
You should be able to log in to the server now.

Thanks,
Maggie

SQL 2008 installation can be tricky... Here are some things I would try.
1. Check this registry key and make sure all values are set to 1*
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\ConfigurationState
*If you don't see this registry key- don't worry just ignore this step.
2. Extract the latest service pack and use it when doing your installation
x86 command: SQLServer2008SP3-KB2546951-x86-ENU.exe /x:C:\SQLSP3
x64 command: SQLServer2008SP3-KB2546951-x64-ENU.exe /x:C:\SQLSP3
3. Run SQL Support installation from the service pack extracted files
x86 command: C:\SQLSP3\x86\setup\1033\sqlsupport.msi
x64 command: C:\SQLSP3\x64\setup\1033\sqlsupport.msi
4. Run Setup from the command prompt using the installation media for SQL
Setup.exe /PCUSource=C:\SQLSP3 /SkipRules=Cluster_VerifyForErrors /Action=Install
5. Follow normal installation procedures from this point.
