Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 AdventureWorks Database in SQL Server 2008 Express:PrepInstance failed for MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS-Full Text Search is missing

Hi all,

I just have SQL Server 2008 Express installed in my office PC that is attached to our Microsoft NT 4 LAN System. I tried to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 AdventureWorks Database in my office PC via the Microsoft Download website => http://www.codeplex.com/MSFTDBProdSamples/Release/ProjectRelease.aspx. Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL) => I got to Database Setup and selected "SQLEXPRESS" as Local Database Instance for AdventureWorks => It tried to install the AdventureWorks Database for a while. But it stopped and showed the following error: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 AdventureWorks Database.. X
                                              PreInstance() failed for MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS
                                              The following features are missing: Full Text Search
                                              Fix the problem and re-run setup
                                                        |OK|

I do not know how to fix this problem (i.e. installing the "Full Text Search" file in the SQL Server 2008 Express in my office PC). Please help and advise me how to resolve this problem.

AdventureWorks Sample Reports Issue

I am trying to install and run the Product Line Sales Report which is part of the AdventureWorks Report Server examples. The report does not appear to have installed with the DVD provided with SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Implementation and Maintenance Book as I would have expected.

I have tried to install the report server examples again from the web but the report is still not present and this installation when it runs, is very fast and it does not look like anything has been installed even though there is no sign of any errors.

The report examples were found here:

Could someone please direct me to sample databases for management studio? I tried the Adventure database, but it looks like it is for sql server and not management studio. Do I have to change any default settings and/or use a sql instance to attach the database. I am an newbie trying to get started.

I have Visual Studio 2008 Professional installed and am trying to use the latest release of Sql Server 2008 Analysis services samples. Unless I'm missing something, it seems I need the 'Team Database Professional Edition' or the 'Team Suite' edition ofVisual Studio 2008 to use these .sln files. This was not the case in the earlier release.

Can anyone confirm this or let me know what I'm doing wrong?

Trying to add a varbinary to a SQL database with an MFC application

Hello there,
I am having a bit of difficulty trying to programmatically update a row in a database with a varbinary piece of data.
I honestly do not know if my issue is MFC related or SQL related.
Appologies if I am in th wrong forum.

I am using an ODBC CDatabase derived class to issue an EXECSQL to update the row.
I am passing the data to SQL as a BYTE*[].

This is the section of theMFC Code:

I was installing Adventure Works database for SQL 2008 Evaluation on Windows Vista Home Premium but couldn't complete it because of the following error message:

"PreInstance() failed for MSSQLSERVER.
The following features are missing: Full Text Search
Fix the problems and re-run setup."

During SQL Installation this feature was selected. Can somebody please help me fix this problem.

We definitely hear that the current SQL Server 2008 installer isn't really working for folks. We've come up with a new approach to instaling the sample databases for SQL Server 2008R2 (Kilimanjaro) CTP3. You can try it out at http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=24854. Although these installers are designed for SQL Server 2008R2, they work for SQL Server 2008. The database names have an "R2" appended to them, though and there are a few minor differences. If you like this installer experience better, please let us know, and we can replace the existing SQL Server 2008 installers with ones that use this new technology.

Evey time I try to run any of the samples programs I get this error msg...

Something went wrong (I wish I knew exactly what) in the original installation of AdventureWorks.

Configuration:
SQL Server 2008 Standard (x64)

SQL2008.AdventureWorks_All_Databases.x64.msi

While the sample folders and files installed correctly, the database did not. There is no .mdf , .ldf, or .bak file anywhere to use to mount or restore.

I have tried uninstalling (remove is the only option not greyed out when the .msi is re-executed) but get the following message:

"Microsoft SQL Server 2008 AdventureWorks Databases Refresh 1 Samples (x64) Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error. Your ssytem as not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run Setup Wizard again."

Of course, I have tried running it at a later time and have tried uninstalling it from the control panel. From the control panel there is a progress bar and unistall window that seems to execute without problem or error message...or any message for that matter. The listing is not removed from the programs installed list and I still can't reinstall.

I have searched around and re-read the instructions and verified that filestream was enabled and that I have the correct rights.

Now I just want to get rid of the corrupted or flawed installation and start over, but i can't seem to do it without dipping into the registry...which I don't want to do without any guidance.

Any ideas?

much less being able to use it. Lets see, wrapping up a few text files doesn't take 37meg, and then the install procedure is obviously doing something besides installing the files, such as building a list of .EXE files that you have on your machine.

Don't waste your time with this ____.

Why can I not select a local database instance fo AdventureWorks2008?

Hi,

First of all I installed the 2008 AdventureWorks Database Refresh 3 Samples and everything seemed to install fine. However the database did not exist within my local SQLExpress instance, so I looked at the prerequisites and realised I was missing most of them (installer really should have failed but oh well).

I then upgraded my local SQLExpress instance to 2008 with Advanced Services. I installed Full-Text Search and also enabled FILESTREAM.

Then I removed the installation of 2008 AdventureWorks Database Refresh 3 Samples since it wont let me repair or upgrade and tried to start again. Now when I install, after I select the features and it asks which local instance to use I select "SQLEXPRESS (engine)" and it wont let me click Next.

Why wont it let me click Next?

I just finished converting 200 + SqlServer 2000 reports to SqlServer 2005 reports utilizing VS 2005. Now I must find a solution for the web application built using VS 2003, to display and provided links that access reports on the Sql Server Report Manager 2008. All reports have been successfully uploaded and tested from Report Manager 2008. I would like to create a page in VS 2005 that does the same thing as the old VS 2003 aspx page did. I am being told it cannot be done. Is there not a solution example for adding some kind of link from the old VS 2003 pages to another page built with .Net 2.0/VS 2005, that could accomplish this task? And what method would be used?

AdventureWorks Analysis Services tutorial code not installing with database

I've been working my way through the Analysis Services tutorial which usd the AdventureWorks DB. At the start of lesson 4 it requires you to open the lesson 4 tutorial.sln in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Samples\Analysis Services\Tutorials\Lesson4 Start. It says if this file does not exist, you should install the samples found on codeplex. I cannot find the actual tutorial samples anywhere on this site, only the generic AdventureWorks installer. After reinstalling the .msi several times as well as downloading the .zip, I cannot find these these tutorial samples. During the .msi installation I made sure the Samples option was definitly enabled. Can anyone help me with this issue?

Hope I'm not missing something simple here! Running Win2003 Standard SP2, SQL2008 Enterprise Evaluation SP1. All updates from Microsoft Update installed. All running in VMWare

I'm working through the self-paced training kit for 70-432 SQL2008 Implementation and Maintenance and have set up my SQL Server as per the instructions in the book (along with the corrections from the associated kb article 968609) so my services are as follows:
SQL Full-text Filter Daemon Launcher (MSSQLSERVER) - automatic startup - started - running under .\SQL2008TK432FullText account
SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) - automatic startup - started - running under .\SQL2008TK432DE

Filestream access is configured and running with access level 2 (confirmed with sp_configure 'filestream_access_level')

I've downloaded SQL2008.AdventureWorks_All_Databases.x86.msi from the Samples Refresh 3 page (I noticed that was released yesterday) - haven't installed any previous AW databases.

When I run the installer, it gets to the page where I select the instance to install to - I select my only instance, the default instance "MSSQLSERVER (Engine)". The "Next" button is greyed out - if I click back, then click next to return to this dialog, the Next button is now enabled but very soon after clicking it, I see a dialog telling me that the "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 AdventureWorks Databases Refresh 3 Samples (x86) Setup Wizard ended prematurely".

I'm not really sure how to troubleshoot this problem - I cannot find much info online but then this version was only released yesterday by the looks of it. Can anyone give me any advice where to look next?

Basically, I need to analyze, the data etc the information in the database and build a cube in SSAS. I have looked on MSDN but none of the databases are for a banking scenario.

How do I configure this. Is this even possible? MSDN recommends VPN, but VPN has a high configuration burden and it also has considerable overhead.

I just downloaded and installed this on a fresh Hard Drive: SQL Server 2008 SR3 ( SQL2008.AdventureWorks_All_Databases.x86.msi ) Absolutely NO Problems, installed like a champ!! My question is this: The "TOP" database says "AdventureWorks" not 'AdventureWorks2008' What does this mean?? All the other builds I have downloaded in the past for 2008 versions say "AdventureWorks2008" In fact if I expand the Database list I have a mixture of DataBases with and without the "2008" extension.

Can anyone verify that this build is ALL 2008 versions. Why then do I have for example "AdventureWorksDW" and "AdventureWorksDW2008"

Is one the "2005" version?? If that is the case then my TOP database "AdventureWorks" is not "AdventureWorks2008"

Can someone please clarify my consusion?? Are there certain tables etc.. I can look for to prove which verison I have?

I have two PC, One of them running on XP OS and another running on Vista OS.

Now I want to copy one text file from one PC (XP OS) to another PC (Vista OS) using dos Copy command.

PC running on Vista OS has Username: Admin and Password: Admin.

How can I pass Username and Password in Copy command?

Also I want to do this copy task using “xp_cmdshell” of MS SQL Server 2005. For that I use following code:

DECLARE @copycmd varchar ( 255)

PRINT 'Copy Start'

SET @copycmd = 'copy "f:\temp\test.txt" "\\server04\E\"'

This code is works if both PC running on XP OS. But it gives “Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.” Message when I tried this code on XP machine as source and Vista machine as Destination.

I am new to SQL server. I downloaded SQLserver2008 Enterprise Evaluation on my Windows Vista laptop. I also downloaded the 2008 AdventureWorks and AdvantureWorks DW. The downloading process seemed smooth enough. But, I couldn't find any AdventureWorks related database in the Management Studio, nor the BI studio. The only traces I found about AdventureWorks are a bunch of files in the following directory:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA
Can any one help please?

Appologies if this has been posted before, however I am struggling with terminology and can't seem to find what I am after.

My aim is hopefully fairly simple, I want to be able to run an external C# windows form application, which listens to events happening within SQL Server 2008. For example I want to know when a row to a specific table is added, or even when a table\database is created.

I have been reading around and come accross service brokers, but I am not 100% what these really do, something to do with message queues? I have downloaded and try to run the Service Broker Hellowolrd_CLR example, but I am presented with the error message "Could not find any service with the name 'HelloWorldClient' in this database." I have run the install script, which ran without errors and I have the database for the example installed, but I am unsure how to resolve the issue.

Are there any books on this that anyone would recommend? Or point me in the direction of a simple and detailed tutorial on how I might acheive this? Whilst I wouldn't class myself a novice using SQL Server, I am by nomeans an expert.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In Excel 2003 I was able to copy query results with header from SQL2005. But In Excel 2007 will not allow me to copy the query result headers to the spreadsheet. Is there a converter that I need?

This is probably a super noob question, but i'm not sure what the correct or a correct way is to modify records in the database.
After modifying the Employee JobTitle or Title values, the database no longer allows access to those employee rows.
Is there a sample application that I should be using, or should I use the stored procedure uspUpdateEmployeePersonalInfo ?

I just need to accomplish a simple value change and have the modified date updated to either a more current time/date or the current time/date of the update.

Can't Remove AdventureWorks 2008

I had to re-install SQL Server 2008. Indoing so I moved the AdventureWorks databases to a temp folder and then back after the install was complete. However I wasn't able to attach them to SQl Server. At that point I delited them not realizing I had to do an uninstall. I attempted to do an uninstall from Control Panel but I am unable to do so. The process starts but about half way through it rolls back to the beginning.

I also tried to so a new install but I am told that there is already an installed version and to delete it.

I have looked everywhere I can think of to try and find where this could be coming from but have been unable to. I even went down into the registry but couldn't find anything.

I am trying to remove Microsoft Server 2008 AdventureWorks Databases Refresh 1 Samples (x86).

Anyhelp is appreciated.

I'm trying to calculate the selfcosts of the manufactured bikes in the AdwentureWorks database and have some problems here. For example, one bike included 100 bearing balls (UnitOfmeasure is EA - Each). Now I need to know, what costs these 100 bearing balls. There are some purchasing orders with beraring balls - one unit costs about 41$. But the Unit Measure of the purchased bearing balls is CNT - container. Is it possible to become the price of the bearing ball in the purchase order converted to the EA measure? Any UnitOfMeasure conversion table or something like that?

I've tried installing Adventureworks, all was going well until I got a error message concerning not being able to write to "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Community & Samples : verify you have access to that directory." Why wouldn't I have access to that directory? I am the admin to my XP Pro. Is this a problem trying to install to SQL 2008 express? Help and thanks.
