Unanswered Issue regarding DNS Alias

We have migrated several dtabases from 2000 to R2. Everything is fine. But the only problem we have taken the 2000 databases offline but now the DNS alias is unable to redirect the traffic to the new server as the old server is still not shutdown and DNS alias is hitting the old server. As a result the applications are failing. Can we rename the old server to get over this issue?

    Hi Steve,

Yes you can rename the Old Server running SQL Server 2000 to SERVEROLD

Also run "ipconfig /flushdns" on webserver or client computer accessing SQL server , so that DNS cache will be cleared as well and resolute to new server properly

Please Use "FQDN" with shutting down old server ....It will grab new server alias automatically.
