Friday, September 02, 2011 5:16 PMWe are migrationg our sql 2000 db to 2008 r2. Some have suggested upgrading to 2005 first then to 2008 r2. Why would we not want to go straight to 2008 we really dont want to have to do two upgrades its not really needed. Does any one have a recommended to do list I should follow. Thanks

There's no reason to do a 2-step upgrade. Direct upgrade is fully supported.
Check out the upgrade page: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/product-info/why-upgrade.aspx. There's a segment for SQL Server 2000.
Detailed upgrade whitepaper: http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/0/D/30DB8D46-8ACF-442A-99A2-0F4CE74AE14D/SQL_Server_2008_R2_Upgrade_Technical_Reference_Guide.docx
Upgrade advisor is the first thing you want to run against your 2000 database. It is available as part of your 2008R2 installation.
Upgrade Assistant helps you perform application compatibility testing. Check out the wiki: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/sql-server-upgrade-assistant-tool-for-denali.aspx.
You can get the tool from http://www.scalabilityexperts.com/tools/downloads.html. Make sure you pick the 2008 version.

I'm guessing you mean Windows Server 2003? If so, you need to get the latest version of Windows Installer. See KB942288
