  • October 2009 GDI GDR for the Client Print Control, MS09-062.

    Brad SyputaMSFTTuesday, October 13, 2009 11:32 PM

Client Print control and GDI GDR MS09-062

On October 13th, Microsoft released a companywide update for all applications and operating systems that ship or redistribute GDIPlus.dll. SQL Server Reporting Services 2000 and 2005 redistributed GDI+ as part of the RSClientPrint.cab file Active X printing. In order to make this easier on our customers, we made several changes to help eliminate problems seen in the past.

    1.      GDIplus.dll has been removed from the RSClientPrint.cab for all versions of Reporting Services and the Report Viewer control. As a result, no future GDI+ updates will be required for Reporting Services or the Report Viewer control.

    2.      Because this vulnerability only manifested as a result of RSClientPrint.cab redistributing GDIPlus.dll for Windows 2000, we will only target the Killbit for that operating system. No other operating system will be impacted by the Killbit.

    3.      Blog post from Brian Hartman for more detailed explanation.

    Impacted products:

    SQL Server Reporting Services:

                Reporting Services 2000 SP2

                Reporting Services 2005 - All

    Microsoft Report Viewer Control:

VS 2005 Report Control - All

    VS 2008 – All

What do I need to do?

Apply the latest patches related to KB 957488 as you normally would for a Microsoft GDR. This will ensure that you are up to date with the latest software. As always, test patches in a none-production environment when possible before deploying.

Once your production environment is up to date, all client machines, when they print next, will install the latest RSClientPrint.cab. Depending on your environment and client settings, clients will be prompted or will install silently.

I updated my Report Server and now I cannot print. I know I am not using the Report Viewer control. What do I do?

In some rare cases on the client computer that is printing, a conflict will occur with the old and new controls. Uninstall the old control through Internet Explorer\Tools\Internet Options\Programs\Manage Add-ons.

I updated my Report Server and now I cannot print. I also have an application server hosting the Report Viewer control. What do I do?

Update the application server with the latest redistributable Report Viewer control for the version (2005 or 2008) that you have installed.

I subscribe to Microsoft Update. Is there going to be any problems?

Potentially yes. If your Application server and your Report Server are not updated at the same time, they will become out of sync and the Active X printing will no longer function. The fix is to update all systems. The Sharepoint add-in does not get updated by Microsoft Update.

My Report Server runs within Sharepoint. What do I do?

In the configuration of using Reporting Services with Sharepoint, you will need to update your Report Server with the latest patch and you will need to install the latest Sharepoint Add-in.

  • ** Please Include SSRS Version When Posting Questions

    Sean BoonMSFTWednesday, April 22, 2009 4:45 AM
When posting questions in this forum, please include the version of SQL Server Reporting Services you are using.  This will help us be more efficient in answering questions.  If you are using the Report Viewer Control, it will helpful if you include the version of the control as well.

    Thanks,
    Sean
