I have the following environment.
- Database Server - SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition w/ SP3 (houses the SSRS database)
- Web Server - SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services w/ SP3
I just lost the hard drive in the web server; the database server is completely intact. I reloaded SSRS, SP3 and reconfigured it to connect to the reporting database on the database server. The problem I have is that I can not find the encryption key backup for reporting services. I know the password that was used to generate the key, but I can't find the actual backup key file.
Is there ANY way of recovering the key or bringing reporting services back up with the existing database given this scenario?

No, there is no way to recover the key. The existing key and encrypted content must be deleted. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157275(SQL.90).aspx for more details about backing up and restoring encryption key.

Thanks. I knew the answer, but was REALLY hoping that someone had something that would help. It turns out though that it ended up better than I had hoped. I removed the deleted content and then reinitialized the database and the only thing I lost was the data sources. All of the reports, snapshots, schedules, users, etc. remained intact. So, I just re-deployed the data sources to the server and that took care of it. I was really happy about that.
