    Hi all,

I've setup reporting services in a default instance for SQL 2005 & 2008 R1 Enterprise Edition on 64bit servers but never before for SQL Server 2008 R1 Developer on Windows XP Home or XP Professional (SP3) before and I've come a cropper.

In the server environments all were default settings.

The developer environments (at home!) are different. Being a fiddler I've turned off all services that aren't absolutely necessary to keep things (day to day tasks) moving at a decent pace and stop viral threats. Full SQL was installed prior to this fiddling.

I now want to play with reporting services at home and cannot! I've started the SQL Server Reporting Services for the required instance, plus IIS services, plus WMI services. Still cannot connect (although through SQL Reporting Services Config tool it says all test succeeded.) What services am I missing? Why won't it connect in IE8? Told it to connect to the ReportServer database using the sa account and password. I've got admin rights so should be no problem there. What other services do I need or am I missing something?

    Cheeers,

    JCEH

    Hello,

What exactly do you mean with "cannot connect"? Do you get an error message or a login prompt or ... ?

When I go to my web-browser and type in:

http://LaptopName:8080/ReportServer_InstanceName or on the click in the Reporting Configuration tool I get the following message (after a consdierable delay) in the browser window:

    Reporting Services Error

    • An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help
      • Keyset does not exist (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80090016)

    SQL Server Reporting Services

Had a look in the error logs in:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\InstanceName\MSRS10.UHUK01SQL2008D\Reporting Services\LogFiles

I've found this in 1 of the log files:

Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ReportServerDatabaseUnavailableException: The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80090016): Keyset does not exist (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80090016)

Bizarre. The database is there. I have sa priviledges on the SQL instance and I'm local admin on the laptop so should have access all areas!

I certainly seem to have an awful lot of files being created in my C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\Microsoft\Protect\S-1-5-19 folder.

Hmmm. Wonder if it is related to this:

Unfortunately I have no idea where a pfx file might be found. This is in a different language.

Apparently you can export a pfx file from Internet Explorer --> Tools --> Internet Options --> Certificates but apparently I have no personal certificates so back to the start.

My feeling is that Microsoft have changed something in the last year or two since I originally installed this, possibly in XP SP3 or one of the SQL service packs and I probably need to reinstall. Somewhat of a hassle. Interestingly, I've just checked one of the production servers on a client site and switched reporting services back on and that no longer works either yet I know for a fact it did when I originally installed it 2 years ago. Fixing that won't be so easy as it'll mean getting IT involved and seeing as their staff turn-over is horrific I doubt anyone has the CD or server license key anymore.

Unless anyone has a better idea, of course?

Now I think about it I seem to remember 1 of the SQL Server Service Pack updates failing (repeatedly) to install and I had to go to the Microsoft Update website, download it and then force it to install manually. I suspect this is the cause. Just tried running the repair feature from my original CD and it doesn't like it: some sort of bol file was missing so probably more changes in the upgrade. Loos like a start from scratch might be in order. That's not bad on my laptop (that's what developer is for!) but I'd rather not have to do this on a production box.

I tried running the repair feature but it failed to find the SQL Books online (probably moved) and for some reason Analysis Services failed. Still no joy. Cannot connect and staggering number of files in the C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\Microsoft\Protect\S-1-5-19 folder.

I would say someone has dropped a major clanger.

On the flip-side, if you're going to have to start from scratch then maybe it is time to invest in R2. On the other hand, clients might not like that given the current economic environment so a fix is definitely required still!

Thanks. Useful but didn't provide a fix, even removing RSWindowsNTLM authentication from the rsreportserver.config file.

No, wasn't this. There is and never was an encryption key. New install of 2008R2 works and that doesn't have a key either.

No, wasn't these either, it appears. Tried the mofcomp fix but no change. Already running as LOCAL_SERVICE so not sure what good that would be.

The blog entry on reflection attacks looked really promising but still no change. Made the required registry changes and restarted computer. Still getting those files created. I entered the host names in the registry key as:

    ComputerName,

    http://ComputerName,

    http://ComputerName:8080/Reports_InstanceName

Not sure if that is the correct way to do it?
