I wanted to share Sabrena McBride's recent posting more broadly - the Reporting Services team released Report Builder 2.0 RTM:

Hooray!  I'm eager to start using 2.0.  I've installed it on my report server, but when clients click the Report Builder button, the ClickOnce process is still launching version 1.0.  What am I missing?  Thanks!

Hello David,

 

Report Builder 2.0 is currently stand-alone - you can start it directly from the program menu.  Click-once install & launch directly from report manager / SharePoint is something we are working on separately.

Report Builder 2.0 generates 2008-based RDL structures that are not supported by RS 2005.  Therefore, you cannot directly publish Report Builder 2.0 generated reports to a RS 2005 server.

We are looking at enabling Report builder 2.0 as a Click-Once for SQL Server 2008 Sp1.

At this point you will be able to configure on the sever whether the link should launch RB1.0 or RB2.0.

Hi,

   I have installed Reporting builder 2.0, every thing was fine. When I tried to open It from start->programs->Report Builder2.0   Its showing a Runtime error saying

An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

 

Failed to load the configuration file 'ReportDesigner.config'. Local preview will not be available

 

because of which I think when I try to run the report inside the report builder, its saying 

 

The definition of the report is invalid.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

 

Any help regarding this??

Report Builder 2.0 is a small, stand-alone application.  Other differences to BIDS 2008 include new data region wizards and improved query builders that are not yet available in BIDS.  Furthermore, Report Builder 2.0 has the ability to work in a connected server mode, i.e. loading and saving reports directly on a server, as well as running preview in a local mode or by executing the report on the server behind the scenes.

Azhar, we have seen this error message when a beta version of .NET 3.5 SP1 is installed.  If so, please upgrade to .NET 3.5 SP1 RTM from:

Is Report Builder final released supposed to work with custom data processing extensions locally?

There's no such thing as a RSReportDesigner.config that will make it possible to configure data extension (used to be a reportdesigner.config in RC1 even though it would not take custom data extension into account).

Is there something I'm missing here?

Hi Frederic,

We pulled the configuration file into the app since RC1 for security reasons, so at RTM you will not be able to configure RB 2.0 to provide a design-time experience for custom data processing extensions. The only support will be round-tripping the CRI portion of the RDL, doing basic layout editing and rendering them when running in server mode.

We will reconsider the extensibility in the next release.

Thanks for the prompt answer.

Indeed we had already noted in the RC1 that it was possible to run and mody the layout of reports relying on custom data extension at the report level. We had written an article with a video showing how to use RB 2 for modifying a report based on our extension (http://www.enesyssoftware.com/Blogs/tabid/62/EntryID/35/language/en-US/Default.aspx).

That is already a very nice feature and we can see the advantage of preparing some report with a possible complex query within BIDS, deploying it and let some other users refining the overall design directly from the server.

Obviously the possibility to create a report from scratch within RB2 would be a plus.

This report builder might be really a good help for our customers, BUT there is one thing I can't understand. There is support for Tables, Views, even Stored Procedures but there is no support for Functions... Why?

 

It's a problem for our application because we store lots of data in XML columns and we have database functions which allow customers to extract data from complex xml fields. Those functions seems to perform better than views from performance point of view.

 

Is there a chance that Function support will be added or should we move to Views?

IMHO Report Builder is very important and demanded tool. So I decided to leave some feedback describing what makes RB unusable for me. I would be really happy, to be able to provide RB to our customers as a convenient replacement for BIDS which is extremally powerful, but quite difficult to use for non-developers.

 

A serious issue is relationships feature in query designer. Even if I use views instead of functions, it is impossible (or I am unable to do this) to join two views in the designer:

- Relationships view does not allow creating custom relationships, there is also no way to hint designer to generate view-based relationship.

- Filters do not allow to reference another column as value

 

I'm not happy to say this, but in our scenario (views extracting data from xml columns) query designer in BIDS is much easier to use for our customers than Query designer in RB.

 

In RB our customers would be forced to write INNER JOIN by hand - in BIDS they do not need to do this - they can relate tables manually.

I am working on a solution at a green-field site where no users currently use BIDS or RB.  Is there no way to repackage the RB2 MSI for click-once deployment - we have no need to retain RB1 so don't need any new 'functionality' just a different application deployed.

It will be confusing for our new users if they by default get RB1 when trying to edit reports via Sharepoint.  It is because of RB2 that I have advocated the use of SQL Server 2008 over SQL Server 2005.

Any workaround would be greatly appreciated!

I have a question regarding credentials.

I have a little app that creates a rdl file and calls the RB 2.0 to render it. I can have a sql server 2008 and a oracle 11 as possible datasource systems.

As I do not have RS installed, I like to run the rdls locally. As we are targeting customers who do not own sql server, this is not subject to change.

My problem are the credentials for the datasource.
For sql server I can enter the credentials in the rdl like this:

When the rdl loads I can run it without beeing asked for credentials.

Now I like to do the same thing for oracle. But it does not work.

I tried some variations like

Was wondering if there was any way of restricting the access to the database ferom RB 2.0, because since you can make querys, you can pretty much have free access to all the data base. Is it possible to use a model in RB 2.0, so that the user can only change the layout, and not be able to change the query ?

Yes, SMDL models are usable on RB2. The design experience using such a model is not as seamless as it was in RB1, though. Instead of the RB1 integrated query/layout experience, RB2 requires the user to define a dataset off of the SMDL model, then lay out the report. The upside is that you can have multiple dataregions based on a single SMDL dataset, and you have the full RDL available to you, unlike RB1.

Am I using and understanding how Report Builder 2.0 can be used? I have already worked with the MS support team and thought that I had a clear understanding of what I was able to do. Unfortunately, RDLC's with 2008 is a key component for us that hopefully will be out soon.

 

1.       SQL 2005 reports will automatically be upgraded to SQL 2008 reports when opened or run in SQL2008

2.       SQL 2005 reports are visible on web pages using the report viewer.

3.       SQL 2008 reports are NOT visible on web pages using the report viewer (at this time until an upgraded viewer is released).

4.       SQL 2008 Report Builder can created reports based on SQL 2008 or SQL 2005 databases.

5.       SQL 2008 and SQL 2005 can coexist on the same server without issues.

 

So, I have written a report using Report Builder 2.0 that will access a SQL 2005 Workgroup edition database. To do this, I thought the proper approach was to install SQL 2008 Express w/Reporting Services which I have done at the client site however I get either an error that says the Report database instance is the wrong version or I get a login failure with the data source. I have now loaded all of SQL 2008 Express interface tools so that I can set permissions, etc.

 

What have I missed here trying to use the Report Builder 2.0 or event SQL 2008 Reporting Services?

Hi,

Please be serious : this is not a v2.0.

This is a beta version.

For example, with RB2.0 v10.0.1600.60
1)open RB1.0, in the Open section, select Open From File, select Workstation. You will see the name of a drive followed by its letter e.g. System (C:).
2)open RB2.0, click on the top left button, select Open,  select Workstation. You will only see the letters, which is useless when you get a list of letters without names...

In my opinion, when a software does not  have at least the abilities of its prior version it is still a BETA version.

I too need the ability to define models ahead of time that users can then query against. IMO this tool is most useful for ad-hoc reporting by people who are not experts on the underlying data structure.

So... I've been trying to find out where you can report against a model. I assume you need to be connected to a SSRS server. Is that correct?

Unfortunately, I am unable to connect to my SSRS server. When trying to connect to the SSRS server from within RB2, I get this error:

Connection failed.
Unable to connect to the server that is specified in the URL, 'http://[server]/Reports_MSSQLSERVER2008/'. Make sure the server is running, the URL is... [the rest is cut off]

If I put that URL in the browser, I get to the Reporting Services Home.

Any idea what the problem is?

I use a lot of local reports in a .net windows client application. It's a hassle to build and run the application everytime you made some adjustments on a report. Is there a way to save a report developed with tb 2.0 to .rdlc?

The link launched the RB 1.0 because RB 2.0 is not currently available as a ClickOnce application. RB 2.0 is available in an MSI installer.

Progress has been made on the ClickOnce deployment of its successor and the "Report Builder" link will change in the future.

I am migrating my existing SQL server 2000 project to SQL server 2008 and also going to use Reporting Services. I have couple of issues which may be potential roadblocks in this make over.

I have my web application which is consumed by different clients across the world. All the clients have there own user base with different access and we are managing it completely inside (not using any windows authorisation and authentication). I configured Reporting Services and now a user can create a report on the model I deployed.

Challenges I face are:

1.   We need this end user to be able to access the data that is related to only him not other clients (basically all clients data are in the same table, normalization fundas :). And in our existing reports we filter the rows from UserID i.e. his login tell us which client/group he belongs to.

In existing Report Services I see one can implement Row Level filter and achieve this but this requires one to have windows authentication model. I don't have time and business priority to change entire authorization system. How can I achieve this? Can I still set some row level filters for the user?

2.   Again on the same lines I want to implement the report services in such a way that different clients/groups do not get to see other clients reports.

So in short e.g. HSBC and Delta are clients of my application I don't want them them to see each other's data (Point 1) & Reports (Point 2). Currently all the data is displayed becasue all the clients share same data tables.

Default, Repeat, RepeatX, RepeatY, Clip

Shouldn't they be (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd220610.aspx):
Repeat, RepeatX, RepeatY, NoRepeat ?

If I use the expression ="NoRepeat", it works as expected.
What does Clip do?

To the various post on this thread requesting confirmation for dates for SQL Server 2008 PCU (AKA SP1) where Report Builder 2.0 Click Once will be made available, this is currently targeted at March 31st. A CTP should be available within 2-3 of weeks.

I would also ask that you post questions not specifically related to RB2.0 per say on separate thread. They will get better visibility from the community and will augment the likelyhood of getting an answer.

Yes we will let you configure whether RB1.0 or RB2.0 should be launched by default from the Sharepoint or Report manager.
This will be set on a per report server basis.
The user will not be able to choose between RB1.0 and 2.0. The server administrator will have to make that decision and configuration ahead of time for all users of each server.

Hiii ,

Is it possible to pass a key filter parameter to the Model on Report Serve? A parameter like user id, which will be used further to run all the reports in that user session.

I don't have active directory integrated to the application hence I can't use something like GetUserId() in row filter.

This is critical to implement Reporting Services in our application.

I am also not able to connect to the report server.
I can browse to http://devhome.abc123.com/reportserver and see the folders and list of reports as expected.
But I get the same error, 'Unable to connect...'. I haven't found any specific 'Help' as to the format either.

I am trying to connect to a SQL Server 2005 RS. Is this the problem? Does it have to be 2008?

I want to address the various questions on this forum regarding timing.
SQL 2008 PCU (or SP1) is slated for late in March this year.

As to whether it is the final release of Report Builder 2008. the answer we will keep making necessary fixes in the various PCU (AKA SPs), but we are not enhancing it anymore. It is feature complete for 2008.

The next release of SQL server was announced last november at the BI conference, SQL Server codename Kilimanjaro is targeted to ship at the same time as Office 14, in the first half of 2010.
This release of SQL server is focused on Self Service BI scenario (Gemini, Self Service Reporting) and as a result we are already building more major enhancements to the Kilimanjaro version of the Report Builder. Lots of cool stuff in there, but too soon to talk about it :-) Sorry for the teaser.

Soon I will come back to this forums to offer for volunteers to join and to take part to the SQL Server Kilimanjaro TAP customer program. This program will be very limited (less than 20 customers) and will likely start in the April timeframe.

As for the next Major release of SQL Server (that includes enhancements to all components, not just the BI ones), it was annouced by our VP Ted Kummert during the BI conference, to be released 36 months after we shipped SQL 2008. And we are definitely planning to keep enhancing Report builder in this release as well.

So bottom line, yes, we will keep enhancing Report Builder with every single release that we can from now on and try to get these enhancements released to you as often and quickly as we possibly can...

Demos are good. Some improvements are needed to make it a professional report builder.
1. Like Crystal Reports, an option of use saved data will help when switching between design and run.
2. Bug: Paper orientation is not persisted in rdl, when exporting to PDF, it always goes back to Portrait.
3. Bug: Reports with Expand/Collapse option when exporting to PDF, only persist the current view;
    could export the outline. Export to Excel is good, persisted the outline.
4. General impression: still a baby product; should target real office product level that can replace Crystal Reports.

I though the SQL 2008 SP1 that can be downloaded from microsoft.com already fix RB1 to RB2 clickonce problem.

But after I read this threat, I just figure out that RB2 is still cannot be used in SQL 2008 Sharepoint Integration ClickOnce.

WOW !!!

That's a news we have been waiting for. I already had tried beta version of SP1 though but couldn't dare to install that on production server.

So I am hoping the moment I install this SP I must start geting Report Builder 2.0 launched from all the clients?

Or I need to do some configuration act in Site Settings or something.

The SharePoint add-in only needs to be installed if you run RS in SharePoint integrated mode.

I'm not sure I understand your question regarding RB2ClickOnce.msi - it is installed as part of service pack 1 for RS 2008.  If you just want the updated stand-alone version of ReportBuilder directly installed (not click once), you can also download it here as msi: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=dbddc9b6-6e19-4d4b-9309-13f62901b0d5

I got an error when I tried to "Open with Report Builder"

after installing SP1, if you are using native mode, you should go to Report Manager -> Site Settings and set the Custom Action URL to:

You may wanto to try launching Report Builder from a different / clean machine.  If it works there, you may want to try to clean out the click once cache on the affected machine.  That cache is typically found under: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\Data

I previously had report builder installed directly from the April 2009 Feature Pack. I've uninstalled this as well as clearing my clickonce cache as instructed above.

not sure how significant this is (or not) but I also had Report Builder 3.0 installed at the time, although uninstalling it didn't help. My machine was due a re-build anyway and on a clean install all works fine.
