Can I use DNS address as a Server Name under Outgoing mail server (SMTP) when setting up a Database Mail in SQL 2005?

    Hi KP_SQL,

It depends on the configuration on mail server side I think.

In my environment, the mail server is on the same domain, if I change it to DNS, I will get an error: The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 9 (2012-07-23T02:28:22). Exception Message: Cannot send mails to mail server. (The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated).)

Here is a thread for this error:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/exchange2010/thread/3201f365-5b74-438f-b431-f8dc194958cc

So I think this issue is a mail server configuration issue.

    Best Regards,
    Iric
