I have PowrPivot Workign on the server as in I can upload to a document library and EWA works great.

The PowerPivvot galler does not display a preview as it did in CTP2. There is just an egg timer with "Capturing Snapshot..."

After a while I get "An Error Occued while Capturing Snapshots for this Document"

Any clues how to troubleshoot this ?

Bob - what version of the Server are you running? Windows 2008 R2 by chance?

Yup - Is there a known issue with R2 and the Power Pivot Gallery ?

Yes, unfortunately there is a known issue with Windows 2008 R2 and SharePoint 2010. Windows is expected to release a QFE very soon. Please regularly  check the FWlink below in order to check availability. Per SharePoint's official response:

For Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7:
At this time, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 are unsupported operating systems for SharePoint Server 2010. A critical pre-requisite installation for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 is not yet available. Please stay tuned for information about how and when you can properly install SharePoint 2010 Beta on Windows Server 2008 R2. We expect to make a patch available for this in the next several weeks. When it becomes available, it will be at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=166231 (currently a broken link).

Thanks - I'll go back to 2008 and wait for the patch ;-)

You can successfully install with 2008! You'll need a patch there too but you are prompted to install the patch during the install and the patch is available.

If the machine you're installing SharePoint has access to the internet, the prerequisite installer will actually download it for you and install it. Otherwise, you'll need to download and install the KB before running the Prerequisite installer.

For Windows 2008 SP2, the KB is this one: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971831

Doh - I rebuild the enironment using Windows 2008 x64 SP2. I get the same error in PowerPivot Gallery". It starts at ""Capturing Snapshot..."  and then goes to
"An error occured while capturing screenshots for this document" with a red X in the bottom right of grahpic. Every else (eg EWA and PowerPivot) work great.

Any help on troubleshooting this ?

    Hi Bob,

Can you also take a look into the log file under:

    [SystemDrive]:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS\gemini.log

It may help us figure out the issue on your machine.

    Thanks,

    Bob,

Have you resolved this issue? I have same entries in the log.

Also, do you have any problems when you interact with published pivot in the SharePoint. In my installation I am getting data refresh error.

    Hi,

I can reproduce the issue on a 64k spreadsheet, so it looks like size is not an issue. I can also reproduce the issue with or without slicers and on both Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2.

The issue is filed on connect.microsoft.com here

    Hi Vidas,

Not resolved yet. I have tried a variety of configs and all have the same result.

I did have initial problems with the data refresh, but this was as my service account didn't have rights to the SSAS instance. This part is working great for me now after I made the service account an SSAS admin.

    Regards,
    Bob

      Has Code

    Mariano,

As I am having the same issue, can I add a bit more info that might be helpful:

    Here is what I do:

Create PowerPivot report. Size is about 5MB - so it is very small. Then start publishing it:

File->Share->Publish To Excel Services->Publish To Excel Services->Enter location http://serverName->Choose PowerPivot Gallery location -> "Excel Services Options.." button-> Items In the WOrkbook -> select PivotTable1 -> "Save" Button -> IE opens with report in the Excel services

    Time: 8:08pm

Now wait 5min for all log entries to be added.

    Gemini.log has following entries:

Also, I am getting same data refresh errors and after that - sometimes every minute, sometimes less frequently. But - I can  access report from SharePoint with no problems! Just Gallery preview does not work!

It appears again to be permission problem. Any idea what could we test more?

Vidas, I was seeing a like error on my machine (W2008 R2 running as a DC: Egg timer on a published workbook and then a timeout after 5 minutes. Egg timer woudl turn into a red "x". Also saw the "was found in a different trust zone" message in Gemini.log

A colleague @ MSFT suggested I add the the machine name into the Intranet and/or Trusted zone on my machine using IE. Didn't make a difference at first, then I did the same thing logged into console using the same domain account that MOSS \ SQL use.

After I did that, I saw a different behavior - Snaphshots got generated for any published workbook which didn't contain a slicer. After a hard reset of the machine, snapshot generation seemed to work as expected.

One difference between my enviornment and yours is that I was able to get my hands an internal build of the hotfix mentioned in this thread. As I recall, that hotfix took care of issues around security token generation &  Secure Store service not working correctly, however...

    Good luck!

    Hi Vidas,

As of the Data Refresh problem, which Security Option did you use for scheduling?

    Mariano,

I do not have any data refresh scheduled on my published worksheets. I have not started to use that feature yet.
Is it possible that you have internal data refresh scheduled, for example for IT Dashboard?

    Russell,

I logged in under SharePoint admin account (in my case SPAdmin), started IE and added my website to trusted site list. After that I restarted machine and now when I publish reports, I can see preview in PowerPivot gallery. For some reasons preview includes all sheet, not just object PowerPivot that I published, but it is a preview!

Thank you very much for your help, Russell!

    Vidas,

Can you check whether the Secure Store Service is up and running, also it there is an Secure Store Service application, and also if there is a target application for the PowerPivot Unattended Account set up?

    1. You can check the Secure Store Service at Central Admin Application > Services on Server

    2. You can check the Sercure Store Service application at Central Admin Application > Manage Service Applications > (you should see listed the SS aplication and the SS proxy).

You can check the target application while on 2. above, click on the Secure Store Service. There should be a PowerPivot Unattended Account. You can also click (at the SharePoint's Ribbon) at Properties (or Manage, I believe - don't remember exactly at the moment, I can check it later) and click on Set Credentials. It won't show what's there already, for security reasons, but you can set a new one. You should set it to be a account who has rights to the data source. Do you SPAdmin has rights to SharePoint's content database and PowerPivot database?

    Thanks,
    Mariano

    Mariano,

    1. In the "Services ON Server" screen I can see that "Secure Store Service" shows as "Started".
    2. In the "Manage Service Applications" screen I can see "Secure Store Services" and under it "Secure Store Proxy" as Started.

When I click on "Secure Store Services" in 2, I see one "Target Application": "PowerPivotUnattendedAccount"

I was affraid at this time change permissions to PowerPivot Unattended Account. There is note" Once the credentials are set, they cannot be retrieved by the administrator". I'll try to find out more about tonight before maybe trying to do change. Should I set it for SPAdmin?

In the Database, I can see that my SPAdmin account is "db_owner" in the PowerPIvot database, "Secure Store Service" and all SharePoint databases.

PowerPivot gallery refresh is working for me know. I am assuming we are trying still find out why I am having "Data refresh" errors?

    Hi Vidas,

Yes, I'm trying to figure out what is going on with your Data Refresh...

Before changing anything on your current setup, can you try to schedule a data refresh a workbook?

    Thanks,
    Mariano
  • Friday, November 27, 2009 10:28 PM

I tried to schedule a workbook. I added some data to source database to be sure that I would see right away when refresh is done.

Scheduled refresh, but even an 1 hour later, it did not run.

I can see that "Next scheduled Refresh" 11/27/2009.

In the Pivot Data Management dashboard this data refresh does not appear in "Data Refresh - recent activity" or in "Data Refresh - recent failures" list.

If I go back to worksheet scheduling through PowerPivot gallery and adjust data refresh schedule, then I see message that data refresh was successfull. But actually data was never refreshed - I do not see new data in my report.

In the log I still see data refresh problem every minute.

    Hi Vidas,

How was your schedule set up (frequency-wise)? Depending on what you chose, it will only run "After business hours", which will only be kicked off after 8PM the server's local time (if I remember correctly, that's the default settings).

Can you copy here the message from the Data Refresh History Page? Was the Data refresh scheduling successful or was the actual data refresh successful?

Oh, maybe it's worth another Question here in the forum instead of reusing this one. That might help other users to browse throu the topics.

    Thanks,
    Mariano

That's ok. As long as you can chose not to use the Notepad to go through the ULS logs, you're fine. :)

    Hi Russell,

Thanks for the tip - Thats working perfectly now!!

In my case I only had to login to the box with with Account used for Gemini to create a profile and it then started working - no need for the tristed zone.

I've marked this thread as answered and will update the connect item too - I guess its a potential bug that needs to be addressed later but at least we have a workaround now.
