    Hello,

Hopefully this is the correct forum to ask this in but I have recently installed SQL Server 2012 RC0 for the purposes of evaluating project Crescent for ad-hoc BI queries.

I've followed the installation instructions at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh231687(SQL.110).aspx and after the "Verify that Reporting Services is operational." step, returned the earlier step of "Verify that PowerPivot for SharePoint is operational." to verify I could launch project Crescent from the Shared Documents as mentioned in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh231684(SQL.110).aspx

For the life if me I couldn't launch it from there yet was able to when I put the sample file in a PowerPivot gallery.

    Is this expected behavior?

    Thanks,

    Dave

Yes, you have to deploy or upload the file into PowerPivot Gallery, otherwise you cannot see the button of Launch crescent report, of course, you can create data connection files that are used to launch Power View in advance, then right-click the datasource, then launch this option.

    You can refer to:

Create a BI Semantic Model Connection to a PowerPivot Workbook

Create a BI Semantic Model Connection to a Tabular Model Database

    Tabular Model Connection Type (SSRS)

If I misunderstand you, please give more detail information about your question.

    Thanks,

Thanks, could you confirm that Step 5 of the instructions below no longer makes sense and the documentation needs to be updated?

    From: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh231684(SQL.110).aspx

To verify PowerPivot data access on the server, do the following:

    1. Download the Picnic data sample that accompanies a Reporting Services tutorial. You will use the sample workbook in this download to verify PowerPivot data access. Extract the files.

    2. Upload the Excel workbook (.xlsx) to Shared Documents. The workbook contains embedded PowerPivot data.

    3. Click on the document to open it from the library.

    4. Click on a slicer or filter at the top of the workbook. Month, color, and type are slicers in this workbook. Clicking a slicer starts a PowerPivot query and proves that your server is operational. The server will load PowerPivot data in the background and return the results.

    5. Go back to the library. Select the down arrow to the right of the workbook, and then click Launch Project Crescent. This step confirms that the Power View feature in Reporting Services is operational. If you did not install Reporting Services, skip this step.

    Hi coastal skier,

Yes, it should be Power view not Project Cresent, actually this document is for preview only, and is subject to change in later releases. Thanks for pointing this out.

    Thanks,
    Challen Fu

It wasn't the product name that I was referring to, but rather the fact that I couldn't launch Power View from the context menu for a PowerPivot document in 'Shared Documents' as instructed in step 5.

I guess that option is no longer possible regardless of the product name.

Hopefully you can flag it for review with a link to this thread :)

    Hi Coastal skier,

Please pay attention to the last centence " If you did not install Reporting Services, skip this step", I think you have not installed Reporting Services, so there is no such button. Besides, this button should be updated to Create Power View Report in RC0 rather than Create Crescent Report.

    Thanks,
    Challen Fu

    Hi,

Must not have been clear enough in my original post about returning to the step in question after performing the SSRS installation.

Anyway, I've accepted the fact that Power View cannot be launched from PowerPivot documents unless they are contained in a special PowerPivot Gallery.

Not sure why the latter conveys that ability but I'll just gloss that over in my presentation to the decision makers ;)

I have installed Reporting services in Sharepoint mode as mentioned in the link and followed the steps, but still I am locate Launch Power View. Do we need to configure the Reporting Services in General Application Settings to see this link?
