AnswerSQL Server 2008 Management Studio on a Vista Desktop

I haved installed SQL Server 2008 Management Studio on a Vista(64 bit) desktop for learning purposes.  When I start Mgmt Studio and try to connect I get a "(Could not open connection to SQL Server - Microsoft SQL Server, Error:2)" message.

While instaling the Managment Studio I was not asked to set up a SQL Admiin Usr Id and Password.  Windows just 'breezed' thru till the end and displayed a completed sucessfully message.  I found out that I needed to start SQL Server Services, but coudl not find this on the system anywhere.  Was something missing in the installattion process?  Or how do I resolve this issue.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Thanks for your effort. From the second image, SQL Express is a named instance (SQLEXPRESS), so the Server Name should be FADMA\SQLEXPRESS, try that in the Connect to Server dialogue, it should be succeeded.

    Hello Madhu

Thanks for the posting, however, this did not resolve the issue.  Please keep in mind that I am running SQL Server 2008, and on Vista.  Also, as mentioned in my original posting, the SQL Management Install did not request for me to enter an Administrator Id and Password.  I therefore have two questions.

    1)  Is this a normal trend for SQL 2008 - no Admin Usr Id and no Password?  Vista checked for the required components on the computer and confirmed it was OK to just install, so I went ahead and did it.

I have an XP Laptop running SQL 2005 and I see SQLSERVER running under Task Manager -->Processes but the Vista machine running SQL 2008 does not have an entry for SQLSERVER under Task Manager -->Processes.

    2)  Is it OK to install using just the SQL 200 Server Management Studio, or I was supposed to install SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 Express before installing the Management Studio?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Man

Which edition of SQL 2008 you have installed on which edition of vista?
Have you checked whether SQL 2008 services exists under SQL configuration manager? If it's there then make sure the service is started and running fine.

You said you installed SQL Server 2008 Management Studio. So you just installed client tools only? Have you installed DB engine together in your installation?

I guess that was not installed.  When I clicked the setup on Management Studio, it just went through to the end and indicated that the installation ended successfully.  Also as indicated earlier I do not see the SQL Services listed in the list of services so I will have to redo it.

I will download and install SQL Server Express and see how it goes.

    Thanks and regards.
