Check this license document from Microsoft
Also, as the question is related to license , you can call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist, and you can get more detail information from there. You can also visit the following site for more information and support on licensing issues: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/mplahome.mspx.
Hope this helps!

So you dont know the answer ?
Well here it is ..Microsoft while not requiring a license per processor per say...they do require a license per "socket"
so if the server ahs 2 quad core processors 8 licenses is not required but 2 will be required....... one per CPU motherboard socket
There ya go !

Daniel,
It's not that we don't know the answer, it's that we're supposed to point you to Microsoft for all licensing questions.
Just as an FYI, with SQL Server 2012 coming out soon, licensing models have changed to be more in line with "other" high level database vendors.

Thanks for the help
it would seem quickle rto just supply an answer instead of continuing the thread by doing all this "pointing"
was it Ok for me to devulge the answer ? I was not aware that some folks here have "instructions " they must follow, instead of just chipping in with an answer....with that said ....since you state your are not suppored to give an answer ..I apologize for cracking wise
thanks again
