    Hi,

Could you please elaborate a bit on your issue? How did you get the error?

You can refer to the following links to uninstall an existing SQL Server instance:

I started with Sql Server 2008 R2 but after trying to publish to my hosting site, server version problem, I tried unsuccessfully to uninstall (I still see programs in the add/remove programs list that will not go away). I then installed Sql Server 2005 Express and got the error above. there were forums that said I needed to install Sql Server 2008 express and I did (still got it) following is the log from it.

Then forum entries said to install Sp1 (log follows), then sp2, the sp3. None have helped to fix the problem. I have been working on this for 5 days now. Can someone please tell me what to do?

My limited experience is that when you have this kind of problem, there was a failure to completely uninstall some SQL Server version that leaves the machine (in the minds of the SQL Server installer and uninstaller) in a confused state.

Check out the last post here for the asker's final solution: http://forums.iis.net/t/1162871.aspx

Also, you may need the same cleanup that was mentioned in the answer to this thread.

    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqlexpress/thread/f9439a40-3160-4c6e-b2be-bc72c1961016

This is somewhat shooting in the dark, but I hope this helps.  (If it works it is better that reformatting the hard drive, reinstalling Windows and all other software, then SQL Server, etc.)

I did the part about msiinv.exe, then the part about msiexec.exe, then ran CCleaner to clean the registry. Then i reinstalled MS Sql Server 2008 express, followed by Sql Server 2008 SP1.  Everything works now.  Error message has gone away.

Thanks to Russell Fields for the info.
