I am running a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP2) - 10.0.4000.0 (X64) on windows server 2008 SP2 in a clustered environment. When I am trying to take a backup of the database instance I see errors and it fails. I am using networker to backup my SQL data. This is working fine with my other environments and only this environment show up these errors.  The SQL log show up these errors.

04/09/2012 03:39:41,spid92,Unknown,BackupVirtualDeviceFile::RequestDurableMedia: Flush failure on backup device 'Legato#ab6dbf69-bf3e-4df8-8486-328599a3e07f'. Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.).

    04/09/2012 03:39:41,Backup,Unknown,Error: 18210<c/> Severity: 16<c/> State: 1.

I had been searching but cannot trace the problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks...

    hi,

Can you check the SQL Server VSS Writer service status please? Is there any related log entry in the Windows event log?

The writer is in the state "started" but it would not show up in console despite a restart of the service. Here is the output of "vssadmin list writers" command. Is this normal with windows 2008? Also I can see the SQL VSS writer is updated to SP2(KB 2285068).

    Hi,

Did you change the service account? Do you have DB02 instance on your machine? Are you using any 3rd party backup software?

    Hi,

    To answer you questions...

Did you change the service account?

If I understand correctly, we never changed the service accounts that used to start the DB instances in the server. They remain same. They have full rights on the instances. we use mixed mode authentication.

Do you have DB02 instance on your machine?

Yes, this is one of the instances in the server. There are multiple instances running like this. Backups failing for them as well.

Are you using any 3rd party backup software?

Yes, I am using networker Backup software to backup these database instances.

Yep, contacted them and they are also not able to trace this out. Actually, the Backup software is running the latest stable code, where it would backup fine in other similar env. As stated above, whether the SQL VSS writer not showing  in the console has any effect on the backups?

     Proposed Answer

Well, in this case the missing VSS writer is your problem. You may try to reinstall or repair. I have seen some issues with it if you have space in the computer name. Please take a look on this article too: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919023

Yes, I will try reinstalling the writer.

Also, one more finding.. I saw the following registry keys in the VSS SQL writer registry path. Does this mean any thing?
