Follow-up question to Tome: Is there a License required to change the Passive node to an active node?

When we go to make these changes, is an addtional License required?

If you keep your SQL Server running on the passive node for more than 30 days, then you need to buy another license for it. This is documented by MS in their documents related to Licensing.

You are already licensed for clustering by your OS license, but you will need an additional SQL license since you will be actively running on another server.

With either windows or SQL enterprise it's the same thing... Windows Enterprise licenses are needed for your nodes in order to do clustering.... Regardless of whether you are using sql standard or enterprise you will need 2 licenses if you are running active/active as Ekrem noted.
