    hi all,

At my office we are planning on moving from a msdn engine for our database to a full fledge
    MsSQL server.

I got a few questions thou. We are looking at getting a dell server, but i dont know if a single Dual Core P4 Processor or a Dual Xeon would be best.

Here is what the Sql Server will need to run:

A database of over 50,000 Items.. maximum will be around 140,000 Items.. with atleast 3 machines being connected to the MsSql server for most of the day.

also i am looking at setting up Active Directory on this same machine..

I have been looking for guides on building a Mssql machine, but havent come across much.

So far the Dual core P4 is:
     Intel 830D 3GHZ
    2GB Ram
    Raid 1 with 2 160GB harddrives
    cd.dvd drive
    Tape Backup drive
    Dual Gigabite nics
Windows 2003 Small Business Server Premium Edition.

And the Dual Xeon is the same above specs..
    Just 2 Xeon 2.8 processors.

    One more question:
I know Windows 2003 Small Business Server Premium comes with MSSQL, but with how many MSSQL CALS it comes with?

    Hey,

I've moved this thread to the Database Engine forum.  What you've specified is fine for installing, but I don't have a feel for how that maps to the your desired performance.
