I am moving my development from one laptop (windows 7 prof 32 bit) to another (Windows home ed. 64 bit). I am trying to use Sql Server Management Studio 2008 R2 to open and edit a SSCE 4 database. I know it is possible because it works fine on my old machine. On that machine under 'Connect' I have two options, "Database Engine..." and "SQL Server Compact...". Both are enabled and I can use this machine to edit the SSCE 4 database. However on the new laptop, the same version of Management Studio has the latter option greyed out. What do I need to do to get Management Studio to work with SSCE 4?

You could try to reinstall SQL Server Compact. Download: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17876.
It also sounds like an issue with SSMS. Possibly try installing it.
If you have any problem, please feel free to let me know.

Hi Chris (and Maggie).
You CANNOT open SQL Server Compact 4.0 files in SSMS 2008 R2.
In order to fix the ability to open 3.5 files in SSMS 2008 R2, you can re-install the SSMS tooling from the SSMS media.
The filename is: SSSCESqlWbTools.msi
You can find a list of tools for bot 3.5 and 4.0 here: http://erikej.blogspot.dk/2009/04/sql-compact-3rd-party-tools.html
Please mark as answer, if this was it. Visit my SQL Server Compact blog
