The Silverlight 5 Tools installer is able to install the Developer runtime and the SDK succesfully (they show up in Program and Features) however during Silverlight 5 Update for Visual Studio 2010 SP1 it fails trying to execute VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe. See log output below. Note that this is a Windows Server 2008 machine and built from a template. I have 45 developers on the same image. Note that I retried the RC deployment and it works fine. How can I fix this?
More details: I tried executing VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe directly. Same result, I tried dowloading for KB2615527 but 2615527 cannot be found on the Microsoft site. Help!
Update: Verfied that the error only occurs if the Tools RC was installed. It occurs even if the RC is uninstalled first.
Update 2: If the RC has not been installed first, the SL5 Tools installation appears to succeed. However an attempt to use an SL5 template, causes an error that implies that SL5 tools needs to be installed. "Programs and Features" confirms that Silverlight 5 Update for Visual Studio 2010 SP1 was not installed, even thought the installer said it succeeded. Running the installer again reproduced the "Generic trust failure" error below.

I'm experiencing the same type of failure with "Silverlight 5 Tools for Visual Studio SP1" not being installed even though the installation appears to succeed. This was a problem with the Beta & RC, and I thought it would have been fixed by now. How sad!
Update: Here's my log from VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe by itself:
Monday, December 12, 2011 4:12 AMModerator
however during Silverlight 5 Update for Visual Studio 2010 SP1 it fails trying to execute VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe. See log output below.
According to your description, please check if you have Visual Studio 2010 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 installed. After you have installed this, you can download Silverlight 5 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 SP1, Siverlight 5 Toolkit, Silverlight 5 Developer Runtime for Windows here:

I can't speak for Ken's case, but I definitely have VS2010 SP1 installed. Please take a look at the log mentioned above, which may shed some light on conflicting files and/or registry entries that should be removed first.

Regarding the issue with the installation of the update for Silverlight 5 Tools for Visual studio 2010SP1, I suggest you follow the steps below:
Enable the verbose logging and get the MSI verbose logs.
Clear the temp folder before the process.
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open text box, type regedit , and then click OK to start Registry Editor.
c. In Registry Editor, locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer( If the key is not seen, please create one).
In the right pane-> string value->name it as “logging->right click on “Logging” ->Modify as "Voicewarmup"
Run the setup.
You will find the MSI logs in the temp folder. Start->run->type in “%temp%->click O.K
I also suggest you to delete the registry that we created for creating the verbose log, to prevent the creation of the log files.
Start->run->Type in “regedit” and click on “O.K”.
In the right pane, delete the key which is named as “Logging”.
Then Post the Log to the Forum or call Microsoft Support

Not the best solution but…
From the log file:
“Original exit code: d:\764dc2f0256deb656573096ebe36bf\VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe returned non-MSI error code: 0x800b010b - Generic trust failure.”
You can see that there is some kind of security issue with the VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe file, so I desided to run it manually, just stract it form the Silverlight5_Tools.exe ( change the extencion to .zip is you need so)
Now you can run the VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe directly, but once againg there will be another probrem, now you will get:
“Failed to verify and authenticate the file -d:\87e689e0e534a13b0dad146b36740857\VS10SP1-KB2615527.msp”
Once againg all you have to do is run the VS10SP1-KB2615527.msp directly (extract it from the VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe file).
That’s all guys, now the tools are finally installed.
PS: What is really happeing?? Usually if your system don’t trust in what it is running, you will be asked for permission (in fact you are asked when you first run Silverlight5_Tools.exe) but later the same installer is trying to run something like this “VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe /q /ignorewarnings /norestart” the ignorewarnings prevents any securyti aler message this is why instead of you been asked for permission to run another .exe, the installation just crash.

Word to the wise: You may need to install the patch even if SL5 tools succeed!
I installed SL5 Tools again after uninstalling the RC for the umpteenth time, and it succeeded! However when I inspected the log 'KB2615527_20120102_073431161.html' it said the following:

I ran the MSP and, besides having to reset the VS settings, I was able to run the SL5 RTM project templates finally!
I will update this post when I work out an install procedure from one of our developer system templates.

Great work Robin!!!
You are a live saver, I have some development to do over the weekend and without this bit peace of information I would have been stuck running around in circles to fix the problem instead of doing actual development.
Keep up the good work man!

The Developer Runtime and the SDK work also for me but I've also a problem with the installation of the VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe. The "Wizard" said "KB2615527 does not apply, or is blocked by another condition on your computer. " Bot I've all the requirement to install the update.
To Solve my problem :
1. Rename it the VS10SP1-KB2615527.exe to VS10SP1-KB2615527.zip
2. Extract the content of the zip file. and run the Silverlight5_Tools\VS10SP1-KB2615527\VS10SP1-KB2615527.msp
3. It run a litle progress bar for about 2-3 minutes and it close without any confirmation or "Finish" button.
After I was able to create and load my Silverlight 5 project.
I was flagossing in circle for about 6 hours before founding that solution so I Hope it will helps someone !!!
