Our Company is currently using Sharepoint 2007 as our intranet.  We want users to start using it for more collaboration and search funtionality.  One function we would want to give each user is the ability to modify their extension number.  However, users cannot edit  the "Work Phone" field in the My Site.  Is there a way to be able to modify this field?

In Central Administration, in your SSP (shared services provider), there is a section called user profiles and properties.  When you click there, go into the list of properties.  This particular field is usually one of the ones that comes over from Active Directory when you sync.  You can change the settings to make it editable by the users, but unfortunately, it will still get overwritten from Active Directory.  So, I guess one option would be to set that field so that it DOESN'T get synchronized from AD.  Depends on how up-to-date you want one or both of these systems to be.  Unfortunately, out of the box, Sharepoint doesn't sync anything back over to AD.

    Hi,

If you cannot see the “Work phone” property in my site, you can go to the Shared Services Administration Home page>User profiles and properties>View profile properties>select “Work phone” property, click “Edit”>in the Edit User Profile Property page, in Display Settings section, make sure the option “Show in the profile properties section of the user’s profile page” is selected; if you want to allow user to edit the values for this property, please select “Allow user to edit values for this property” in Edit Settings section.

After this, you can edit the property in My Site user profile page. But as Laura said, the “Work phone” property is mapped to a data source such as a property in directory services, the value is replaced with the imported value the next time user profiles are imported. For this reason, administrators typically edit only properties that are not mapped to data sources. So in My Site user profile page, you will see a warning that “Indicates a field that is updated automatically form the corporate directory. Changes to these properties may be lost.”

    Hope it helps.
