AnswerWhere are the KN install files?

I attended a MOSS training course (MS 5061) this week with a Microsoft certified training provider and now I'm totally confused about the current status of KN.

After reading the announcement on this forum and various blogs - Bob Fox, etc - I'd formed the impression that the release of KN had been postponed and that the install files are no longer available. My trainer assured me that this isn't the case and that KN ships in the box with MOSS 2007. The Microsoft courseware also implied that the product had shipped and is ready to use in production.

The MOSS administrator's companion, in the section entitled 'Installing and Configuring Knowledge Network for SharePoint Server 2007' states:

    Installing Knowledge Network

    1. Start the installer by clicking KNServer.msi.

    2. In the Knowledge Network window, click Start.

    3. In the End-User License Agreement window, read the license agreement and then click I Accept.

    4. In the Server Type window, click Install and allow the application to finish.

    5. After installation is complete, click Close.

    6. Repeat steps 1 through 3 on every server in the Office Server Farm.

But it says nothing about where to obtain said .msi file.

    So my questions are:
    • Does KN ship in the box with MOSS 2007?
    • If so, where are the installation files?

Thanks Phil,  didnt mean to come off sounding like " hey this guy dont know what he's talking about"  This topic though im sure has caused quite a bit of confusion so my comment should not be taken to infer anything like that.

If your MCT i know there is some internal pipeline you guys use so please do put that word out to the other MCT's giving this same course.  Thanks Phil.

Funny... I just got to the same place in the book and could not find the files either.

Amazing, the Google crawler has your message indexed.... the only hit on knserver.msi

Wow, that was fast. I wonder when it'll get indexed by Live Search...

Your trainer is absolutly wrong in this case.  KN was always a addin that was available via the Connect site but the bits have been pulled from the site.  Microsoft is going to be pushing the idea of Social Networking in VNext and that is where you will find KN or whatever its name becomes.  So we have to wait.... Im in the same boat as a big believer in this application and I am looking forward to seeing this come to life again.

If anyone would like to drop me a line with questions that I can answer about KN please feel free.  I have my contact information all over my team site at http://bobfox.net and bobfox.net/spblog

To add some more info to this.... although the chapter in the Companion Book was excellent it was written back when KN was shooting for a supported release which never did happen.   I also was an author in the upcoming MVP Book and my chapter dealt solely on KN and when it was announced that the product was being pulled I decided to pull the chapter from the book.  So what im trying to say here is that there are references to this in books you will pick up but alot of these books were written back in late 2006 and early 2007.  Now you are all more informed about its availability

    Bob, Nick and others

I'm the trainer Nick referred to in the original post.

Thanks for the clarification, I hadn't picked up that KN was pulled from release.

I can't change the official Microsoft training material, but I can add additional comments on the way through.

    Bob (and others)

I wasn't offended - I was pleased.  I appreciate the input (and yes I will spread the word to other MCTs).
