OK, I'm just getting into sharepoint, TRYING to follow the Step by Step and I get to one step where I have to choose
    Site-> Administration-> Administration Home
and I get the message above.  Looking at what is in the book, it looks like a useful area, but I can't get there!
    Any thoughts?

I'm running Vista Enterprise. I had the same issue crop up after I updated to Firefox 3 from Firefox 2. I found when I uninstalled Firefox 3, the problem went away. I then tried reinstalling Firefox 3 making sure to uncheck the box during installation that asked if you wanted Firefox to be your default browser. The problem did not reoccur. There is an issue with Sharepoint Designer not liking Firefox to be specified as you default browser when it comes to using Administration tools.

Thanks a lot for posting this here.

That's (problem with setting Firefox 3 as a default browser) is one I haven't seen anywhere else in blogs/newsgroups/forums.

I have the same issue. I checked under IE Internet Options/Programs but IE is my default web browser. I do have FF 3.0 installed (I like Firebug, what can I say).

    Sleznikow,

You were right, even for this situation:

I was having the same problem and I have to say it is the most ridiculous error message I have ever seen. Anyway, the error occurred in Microsoft Outlook 2007 Enterprise Version under Windows XP Professional SP3. In outlook, I went to Tools> Options> Other TAB> Advanced options Button,
under general settings I checked "Provide feedback with sound" Clicked {ok} then {Apply}. Then a dialog pops up mentioning  that I need to download an add-in for that feature to be enabled and to click {Yes} if I want to go to the webpage now.

After I click {Yes} then I recieve the error message you mentioned:

A World Wide Web browser, such as Windows Internet Explorer, is required to use this feature.

Based on your suggestion, here is what I tried, which varies slightly.

I went to Start Menu> Set Program Access and Defaults and used the "CUSTOM" drop down arrow, then chose Internet Explorer as my default browser.

    Thanks Sleznikow....this error was annoying.

On a related note: I receive this error when I try and use SharePoint Designer to export a site. My default browser is IE (8 beta 2) and while Firefox, Chrome, and Safari are all installed on this PC I am hoping that these are not related to the issue.

SharePoint Designer > File > Export > SharePoint Site Template

In my case I have lots of workarounds so it's not a big concern for me, but figured I should also note this.

*(SharePoint instance and designer have all the most recent upgrades and patches aside from the latest cumulative hotfix package released a few days ago)

Same issue came calling on me today when I installed FF3.04. I previously had IE8 Beta 2 and Chrome, was using IE as the default. Running on Vista Home, sleznikow's fix worked like a charm. I don't know why, it just did. I hate when that happens...

I ran into this error earlier today and also came to the conclusion that uninstalling Firefox and Chrome were the key to fixing this issue in the short-term. I found some more interesting extension associations which I thought might have an effect, but was not able to find a configuration that would work with Chrome installed at all.

If someone else finds out how to fix this issue without requiring Chrome to be uninstalled, please add a comment to my blog about this subject. Thank You.
