    Hi punkouter,

As the SharePoint 2013 Preview is still a new born and we will see more documentation in coming days soon. As of now try installing the SharePoint 2013 Preview on Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 operating system.

The client installation of SharePoint 2013 isn't supported any more regarding this video:

    http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/setting-up-team-development-infrastructure-for-sharepoint-2013-development/10tcd4al4

Although Windows 8 is listed here as supported on the download page:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30345

Anyway you can use Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or Windows Server 2012 to successfully install SharePoint 2013. If you have Windows 8 Professional there should be Hyper-V included allowing you to virtualize this environment.

Did you tryadding the tag "<Setting Id="AllowWindowsClientInstall" Value="True"/>" to the config files in the setup?

The link indicating that Windows 8 is a supported OS is wrong. I'll open an issue on our side to fixing it. Thanks for catching this.

The video indicates that Windows 8 is supported through Hyper-V which is part of Windows 8. SharePoint would run on an VM image.

I don,t think one can install SharePoint preview 2013 on window 7..it is no more supporting client OS.

Yes,one can install  it on Window server 2008 R2,Window server 2012 and window 8 support with Hyper-v..

Then what are we supposed to use for development? I don't want to have a separate env just for SharePoint. That's one of the reasons people hate SharePoint!

I feel your pain Eric.  Have you considered slapping 2012 on your workstation and developing on that?

I wound up finally getting 2013 to install on a Hyper-V server on my Windows 8 box after a full week after my day job knocking my head against the wall.

Just a heads up for anyone reading this, just installing App Fabric on the server does not work. You have to use the prerequsiteinstaller.exe with the switch to get it configured correctly. It took several days of Googling to get that information. Also, if you just try running the prerequisite installer by itself it will just go in circles restarting your machine over and over for a few hours then finally fail. That's because the installation files for the prerequisites are not included with the ISO. Here is a good site with the laundry list and a link to the switches reference.

Also, if you are creating a hyper-v server there is no Virtual Network Manager, it has been changed to Virtual Switch Manager. That also cost me several hours of confusion.
