Trending for KPI in DataView Webpart - compare field value between 2 rows

I am using WSS 3 and SharePoint Designer 2007.
We are trying to track productivity numbers from one month to the next and apply conditional formatting based on whether there was an increase or decrease in the value of the field.
I have (a dashboard full of) dataview webparts for the lists, with several fields that need to be compared. Each list is filtered to show the previous two months.
Is there a way to accomplish the calculation so we can have a visual indicator of the delta on these figures?

Yes you can use calculated column embedded with HTML, refer to the following post for more information

Tuesday, September 18, 2012 10:03 PMI have gone over these posts, but all they do is show you how to set up conditional formatting--which I can do with SharePoint Designer and the DVWP. What I can't figure out how to do is calculate the delta between one record and another. Is that possible?
