Alerts Not Working for Sub Folders
Mainly need/want to confirm that if a user sets up an alert on say the top directory of a "Shared Document" library. Any time anything is put into a Sub Folder they should get notified correct?
If this is how it is supposed to work... are there any specific logs or anything I could look at to determine why it may not be working?

Hi Billy,
What’s the version of your MOSS or WSS? Do you use Exchange server or just SMTP to send the email? Can you receive alert when you add folder or document in the root directory of this document library?
Your understanding of alert is right. Indeed there are basic steps to troubleshoot alert problem however first you need to find that if the alert can work well on other document libraries. Please follow the steps below to test:
1. Create a new document library and create a folder called “root folder” and set alert. Ensure that you receive the alert email after you set alerts.
2. Create a sub folder called “sub folder” under the root folder and wait for a while to see if you can get the email to notify this sub folder is created.
3. After you get the email, upload a test document in this subfolder to see if you can get email after a while.
If you can finish the steps above successfully, I think there is no problem with your alert. You need to check if the account which receives the email has at least read permission on the item in this document library.
If you cannot receive email at any steps above, you need to troubleshoot your alert referring to the article below:

- Just as an FYI.. I did do a little test in a play area and the alerts are working for me. I was notified when a directory was created, when a file was created, when a file was updated and all that fun stuff. So the alerts are working... just need to find out why it isn't working for this one user.
Thank you for the information :)
Billy S. - I am having problems with alerts for FBA users (adam users provisioned through ECTS). I have an extended MOSS2007 application which uses dual authentication, AD for internal users and ADAM for external clients. Alerts work fine for AD users. For external users, they only get the initial notification that an alert was set, but that's it, no other alerts for them after that. If there is an alert set for a document for both AD user and ADAM user, only the AD user receives the email.(the 2 users have the same level of rights, the alerts were set for the internal user on the internal url, for the external user on the external url, to avoid authentication issues). Here are the troubleshooting i steps went thru:
-If i create an workflow to email the owner of the file when the item is changed, then the external user receives the workflow notification when his items get changed. So other emails are sent out to the adam users , only the alerts dont work.
-I checked with the Exchange admin, there are no emails waiting in the queue and he also verified that the IP of the moss server has been added to Allowed Relays .
-In the database i can see the alerts in immedsubscriptions and schedsubscriptions.-the Status of the Timer job for Immediate Alerts is always successful.
-the stsadm getproperty returns the right values .
-the ects configuration webpart has the correct smtp setting - This solved my problem:
