AnswerHow to manually duplicate a basic MOSS Install

When I install MOSS 2007 using the "BASIC" option there are a number of components that are installed:

    Central Administration
    Document Conversions Launcher Service
    Document Conversions Load Balancer Service
    Excel Calculation Services
    Office SharePoint Server Search
    Windows SharePoint Services Database
    Windows SharePoint Services Help Search
    Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail
    Windows SharePoint Services Web Application

When I do a "Farm" install to a single server, I get the following list:

    Central Administration
    Windows SharePoint Services Database
    Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail
    Windows SharePoint Services Web Application

Is there any documentation available that documents exactly what the Technology Wizard is doing for these two different installation paths? In fact, what I really want to know is how to I recreate the BASIC installation environment in a single Farm installation ? Any ideas ? THanks.

    Hi,

Basic installation installs the SharePoint with default parameters, which are:

    ·         Install using SQL Express version, in the default location

    ·         Install standalone server with all services running as you mentioned

Advanced installation just gives you the ability to choose the parameters you need for your installation which can be:

    ·         Choose the SQL instance you need to install on

    ·         Choose or create the farm you need to install

    ·         Choose the type of the server ( WFE, complete)

If you choose complete components to be installed with advanced installation, you will be able to run all service just like basic installation you mentioned

    Hope this clarify

    Thanks Ammar,
Yes, that is helpful. But, I need to be able to control the installation process. If there was documentation that maps the SharePoint component to the installation option, that would be cool. As it is now, there are lots of twists and turns on the Installation and Configuration wizards, and it is not clear what option does what. Thanks to virtualization, I just keep repeating the install process - see what happens and start over again. This is just so slow and expensive... seems like the Installation and Configuration Wizard processes should be properly documented and explained by Microsoft. That is what I am trying to find from our friends. Cheers,

    Hi Mark,

Have you checked this document(Installation guide for Office SharePoint Server 2007) from Technet -  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc298924.aspx , It discusses Simple Farm Creation and Got Step by Step's too.

You might want to think about using scripted installs if you really want to have godlike control of how the install works.

Theres a good intro here by MVP Ben Curry to get you started:

cycling back from development... I methodically follow steps to manually install a small MOSS farm with three virtual machines installed via a MOSS Slipstream:

    1. Domain Controller
    2. SQL Server 2008
    3. MOSS Web Server

After running Prod and Tech Wizard, I am stuck on following:

Observing Services on Server, the "Office SharePoint Server Search" is missing. I tried rerunning Wiz again, no joy. The Excel Calculation Services is also missing.

Also, Document Conversions Launcher Services and Load Balancer Services are Stopped.

I cannot continue steps, as there is a dependency that the Search/Index Server be there. Any ideas ???? Is there any way to manually install these buggers? Thanks.
    BR,
