SharePoint Central Administration shows blank page

I've installed Search Server 2008 Express over an install of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express. The installation and configuration of Search Server completed without any errors. Upon finishing, though, it forwards me to the webpage to administer the Search Server and the page is blank. Not a 404 error-- blank. Here's the HTML that's generated:

Looking at IIS, there's an entry for SharePoint Central Administration v3 which is bound to the port indicated by the Search Server installation. Browsing this site, I see only two files in the root: global.asax and web.config. There's no index file of any type. I've re-run the Configuration Wizard a couple times and the same result is produced every time.

Is there anything I can do to get this running?

How do I index user profiles in SharePoint Server 2007 using SharePoint Search Server 2008?

I was told that this would be the ideal forum for this question.

We are running SharePoint Server 2007 with dual WFE's and have a seperate SSP and index server as well as seperate Database Servers. All servers and services sit behind an ISA Server which authenticates all traffic to the Sharepoint Interface.

I need to configure Search Server 2008 to index all user profiles.

From what I've seen it will index the MySites we have created but will not index user profiles.

We want to minimize resource usage to ensure that the end user experience is not effected. So creating a MySite for all users is a last resort.

Any Ideas?

Using Windows Authentication with Search Server Express

I want to be able to enable windows authentication for people wanting to use search server express. Anybody know how?

Currently when I visit the search page and I have to enter the installation password, my normal account does not allow me to authenticate.

Is it possible to use the web service "search.asmx" to get the search results in Search Server 2008 Express? And to use all the methods described here like "StartFullCrawl()"? I would like configure my Search Server and then to use it programatically. But every example site I find which describes programmatical access, is talking about Share Point Server but not about Search Server Express. So I wonder whether I can use this functionality in Server Express also.

Reparing an SQL Server 2008 installation fails

After running the REPAIR option of the SQL Server 2008 CD, I always get that all components successfully passed except the Reporting Services. The error is as below:

I have uninstalled the Reporting services and re-installed it, and it is working properly. but still the same error.
NB: I need to repair it in order to be able to apply the SP1, because the patch will fail if the installation is not repaired.

Uninstall Search Server 2008 Express - errors in log files

Hi!

We have uninstalled Search Server 2008 Express and managed to get our WSS 3.0 to work fina efter the uninstallation, but we get loads of errors in the log files in LOGS under 12-Hive. In order to get rid of these we have tried several things. The last thing we tried was to uninstalled WSS, reinstalled it with the old config db and conten db - but still, the log files are filled with errors regarding Search Server 2008 Express.

I guess that we are not the only ones that has uninstalled Search Server 2008 Express. How can we get rid of the error logs? There got to be something left from the Search SErver 2008 Express installation, how do we get rid of it?

Excessive Memomary Usage of OWSTIMER.exe

Hey,

I have recently experienced this problem where I ran out of virtual memory as a result of OWSTIMER.EXE eating up my memory. It was using almost close to 3GBs of mem. Is there a hotfix for this or a possible solution. I had to restart the service and it seemed good but I'd like to know if there is a better solution than restarting the service. If so please let me know if you have experienced this and got a solution, thanks guys.

Is it possible to create a search scope a make searches just in folder?

I have 1 big root folder with like 20.000 folders and 100.000 files. Thes files and folders are organized based on Projects. and Sub projects. I want the search to be done based on Projects (each project has a folder assigned). I want to crawl the root folder (all the project) but focus my search on a specific folder

I have metadata property like filename, path, cached path, but none for directory

I have installed and configured MS Search Server 2008 Express. I have created data sources and crawls. But whenever I search for something, I receive the following error message:

"Your license for Microsoft Search Server has expired"

Search Server 2008 Express + Exchange 2007 SP1 Public Folders

I've spent over a day now trying to get the crawler to index any public folder in our Exchange 2007 environment but to no avail.

I've searched through the forums and found similar cases but with no answers or with solutions that didn't apply to my current environment.

The crawler log shows a succesful crawl of http://server/public/folder/subfolder and then an exception error HRESULT: 0xC004800A from the rb://server/public/folder/subfolder url

When trying to go the secure way with https instead, I get the same result, but a different error message: HRESULT: 0x80040E4D

Trying to manually navigate the URL(s) work just fine with the crawler service account, so I am guessing it's not a permission problem. but then what is it ?

Hi all,

Accidentally i deleted search center site. Now i am planning to uninstall search server and install it again.
But the problem is i am not able unsinstall.In add or remove progras i tried to remove search server 2008 express. it shows some warning and i cliked ok for that. uninstall screen appeared .after 10 secons that screen disappears with out showing any errors.
Pleaase any one help me how to uninstall and install Search server 2008 express..

Web site crawling problem

Hi every body

I've got a problem when i tried to crawl a developement web site. In fact I have develop an asp.net web site and for some reason i want to use search server in order to index his content.
I have installed search server on an other server. I have try to crawl web site on the web and it works fine but i can't crawl my develop web site. ive got an error :

The analyzer is unable to communicate with the server. Verify that the server is available and access to the firewall is configured correctly.

It 's very stange because when i tryed to go on the default page on the site every think is fine. Is there a special config to do for IIS 6? for search server?

I have problrm with PDF search

I have two machines one is 32-bit and the second is 64-bit

Machine one is 32-bit machine with Windows 2003 OS and MS-SQL Server 2005 and

Machine two is 64-bit machine on which 32-bit OS (Windows 2003) is installed, MOSS 2007 (32-bit) is also installed on this machine. MOSS on this machine is using SQL Server that is installed on Machine one

I have installed PDF IFilter 6.0 on both the machines

64 Bit Server running IIS in 32 bit Emulation Mode

I have a server that is Windows 2003 64 Bit running IIS in 32 Bit Emulation Mode. (Was configured by a previous IT person).

If I try to install the 64 bit version of Search Server Express 2008, the Pre setup fails on the IIS Roles and if I try to run the installer it stops with a message about IIS in 32 bit mode.

If I try to install the 32 bit version, I get the same Pre setup message but the installer refuses to run as it is the 32 bit version on the 64 bit server.

Is there any way around this?

Problem after installing SSE on top of an existing WSS 3.0 installation

I had an existing WSS 3.0 installation, and installed SSE on the same machine. WSS 3.0 was set up using Windows Internal Database.   The server is a Windows 2008 Server.

After setup, when trying to run the Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard, I get the following error, right after it tells me it may have to restart some services:

How to index Office 2007 docs when URL has no extension? (not a problem for Office 2003 docs)

I'm using SharePoint 2007 SP2 to crawl an external web site. The issue I've got is that it fails to index Office 2007 documents, even though I know that I've got the necessary ifilters installed, and Office 2003 documents index OK.

A key point is that the URLs to the documents being crawled don't include the document extension. For example the URL:

https://myserver.acme.com/id:A2232

returns a Word 2007 document. The HTTP headers for this request look like:

        Content-Disposition=inline; filename="Test Document.docx"
        Accept-Ranges=bytes
        Content-Length=10411
        Cache-Control=public, max-age=3600
        Content-Type=application/vnd.ms-word.document.12
        Date=Mon, 16 Nov 2009 04:44:41 GMT
        Expires=Mon, 16 Nov 2009 05:44:41 GMT

The crawl log shows the following error when this URL is crawled: "The filtering process could not load the item. This is possibly caused by an unrecognized item format or item corruption".

I've found that if I set up a vanilla IIS site that includes the docx extension on the URL, it indexes fine, so I know I've got the ifilter for docx correctly installed.

So, the problem appears to be that there's no extension on the URL...

BUT, the lack of an extension on the URL poses no problems when its a Word 2003 document. So by contrast, the URL:

https://myserver.acme.com/id:A2233

returns a Word 2003 document. The HTTP headers for this request look like:

        Content-Disposition=inline; filename="Document 02.doc"
        Accept-Ranges=bytes
        Content-Length=36352

Can anyone explain this difference in behaviour when crawling Office 2003 and Office 2007 documents, and/or suggest a solution? Changing the external web site so that it includes the document extension on the URLs isn't a viable workaround for me.

Slow First Query

Hi,

I just installed Search Server 2008 on both 2008 R2 x64 and 2003 x32 bit.
On both installations I have the same problem:

- Opening the main search page takes some seconds (10 seconds or so)
- Opening the page again is fast. This is even if I use a different browser or I force not using the cache
- First search will take some seconds as well. Next search will take considerably less. Changing to different results page is fast

If the server idles for some seconds (30 seconds or so), it gets slow again.
While this 10 seconds sound like a small amount of time, people are now used to the super-fast internet search experience and complain that a local search is slower than their preferred search engine on the web.

Is there something I can do to speed this up?

Btw, server is a 2.4Ghz Quad, with SAN storage and 4 gb of RAM.

Install Search Server Express with existing WSS 3.0 SP1 + Infrastructure Update?

I have a WFE server running WSS 3.0 with a separate SQL 2005 database server. The WFE already has SP1 and the Infrastructure Update applied, I want to add a new Search Server 2008 Express Query/Index server to the farm.

When I run the Search Server Express install on the new server, I couldn't connect to the existing farm because of the SharePoint version conflicts. As far as I can tell, Search Server 2008 Express installs as version 12.0.0.6219 and WSS 3.0 with SP1 and the Infrastructure Update is version 12.0.0.6319.

I was able to run the Infrastructure Update on the new server after installing Search Server Express, and that brought it up to the same version as the existing WFE server. I was able to connect to the existing farm, but I was not able to run SearchServerExpress.exe install on the existing WFE server. Any suggestions on what I can do to run the SearchServerExpress.exe on the existing WFE that has WSS 3.0 SP1 + Infrastructure Update?

Weird Licensing Problem

I had to turn off the search service in Sharepoint and then turn it back on and reindex everything. Now I get this in the search page when you try to do a search.

Microsoft® Search Server 2008 Express is configured in a topology which is not supported by the software license terms

It was working before and it's installed on a single server with sharepoint on the same server.

Search within emails

We're testing a migration of Exchange Public Folders into SharePoint (WSS 3.0 SP2). Currently, only about 150 emails (*.msg files) are in a document list. I've recently implemented Search Server 2008 Express and it seems to be working correctly. However, I'm not able to do a search for keywords within those msg files. Doing a search for "msg" does bring up the documents, so I know the crawls have been successful and complete. Is there something I'm missing to enable this or is this not possible? Thanks much

"Reporting" missing on the SIte Collection Features - MOSS 2008 Express

Hi,

I have fresh installation of Microsoft Office Search Server 2008 Express. I try to configure usage reporting according to this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262541.aspx but when I try to do what is described in Activate usage reporting section I am stuck with point On the Site Collection Features page, click the Activate button for the Reporting feature.

I do not have button Reporting. Does anyone had similar problem?

Crawl Schedule Not Running as Scheduled

I have a two server setup using WSS 3.0 and Search Server 2008 Express. I have setup a full crawl schedule to run once a day and a incremental schedule to run every 20 minutes during the day. Once started it will run for a few hours as expected, but with stop without any warning or error messages being displayed and will not continue on the set schedule.

What really confuses me is how I can look at the content sources, see when the next scheduled crawl is supposed to occur yet it has not. It confuses me because it acts as if it is still in the process of scheduling and running these jobs.

Any thoughts as to what may be causing this?

Search Server 2008 Express Intergration with Project server 2007

HI All,

We are trying to deploy the Search Server 2008 Express edition into our Project server Environment(one app server and one Database server).
Project Server 2007 was upgraded to SP2 and Sql Server 2005 with SP3.

I tried to install the Search server on the App server but its give us error "already installed the office product." not allowed to do it. Then we tried to install it on the Database server and from Wizrad we select to connect exiting form and give the our Sharepoint configuration database. after complete 2 jobs it throughs the following error and ends up

Unable to restart Search Server Express 2008 in a WSS 3.0 Farm

Hi!

One of my customers has a WSS 3.0 Environment. The setup is this:
Server A --> WSS 3.0
Server B --> SQL
Server C --> Outgoing e-mail

There is also SSE 2008 configured in this environment and it has been running perfectly until I had to restart the search services. Now I can't restart it. When I try to perform a search I get an message saying that the SSE 2008 has been configured in a topology that isn't supported by the programs license agreement. More than one server is not allowed.

I know that SSE 208 is not allowed in a farm, but how could it be running neatly until I restarted the search service?
I wasn't the one installing SSE2008 so I don't have the history. I know that the databases has been on a separate SQL server all the time so it must have been a farm even when SSE was installed.

What can I do to get it back on track? Any ideas? Right now there is no search at all, and I really don't want to uninstall SSE since it could give us even more problems...

Do I need to say that I didn't install and configure it? I'm a little lost here..

Search Server 2008 and "..\sites\" vs "....\'

I was told that putting my site collection under "sites" (as in http:\\myserver:port\sites\mySite1\default.aspx) has been known to cause trouble with Serach under Search Server. Microsoft recommended I simply create the site "http:\\myserver:port\" instead and leave it at that.

Have you ever encountered such an issue related ot this?

Simple Win 2k08, x64, farm: 1 WFE server + 1 sql 2008 backend

I installed SSE2008 on the WFE. (This apparently install wss3 as well). Do I also need to install the WSS3 Service Pack 2 or is that included in the SSE2008 install?

BTW: After installing wss3, sp2, on my SSE2008 box (just now), everything appeared OK but when I tried to acess any wss3 site I get the error
"Server error": http:/go.microsoft.com/fwlink?linkid=96177" which pertains to how to patch wss3. Maybe I'm not supposed to apply wss3 sp2 to Search Server Express 2008! I'll retry the install and see if the same error occurs again.

Sidebar in Search Center results...

Searching for the string "abc" under Search Server 2008 Express "Search Center Home", returns, in addition to what I want, a sidebar of info apparently drawn from the Internet. (e.g. it returns www.abc.com, in my case.)

Can this sidebar be turned off or disabled as the information it returns is not related to the internal site I want searched.

Failure: integrating Serach Server 200 Express and wss3 Site

Success:
Search Server 2008 Express installed on a WFE box.

Success:
Created a new web app and site collection, "MySite1", on the WFE. I created a simple text file containing the characters "abc" and uploaded it to mySite1.

Success: Under the Search Center home page I searched for "abc" and the file I created (containing the string) is returned (correct).

Success: Under mySite1, I used its search box to search for "abc" and the file I created (containing the string) is returned (correct).

Failure: I went to mySite1, Site Actions > Site Settings > "Site Colleciton Administration" > Search Settings > and used the custom scope "/SearchCenter/Pages".

Back on mySite1 the search dropdown now shows

This Site: mySite1
All Sites

When I select "All Sites", enter "abc", and Search, I get HTTP 404 Not Found : "The web page can not be found".

I want to integrate the "larger" Search feature at the lcoal site level. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

I am trying to install the Search Server 2008 express edition over the Project server 2007.My envirnoment haing one App server and 1 Database Server.
while i am trying to run the setup it through the following error.

"Setup is unable to proceed due to the following error(s):
The Office Server product cannot be installed on a server with an earlier
release of an Office Server product installed. Uninstall the existing
product and re-run setup.

Correct the issue(s) listed above and re-run setup."

Please help me in this regard how can I install the Search Server with Project server 2007.

Can't enable incoming email for document library after upgrade from WSS 3.0 SP1 to Search Server Express 2008

I submitted this as a bug on Microsoft Connect, but I thought I'd try posting here to see if anyone else has run across this error and knows how to fix it.

I have a couple of document libraries that can accept incoming email. Since upgrading from WSS 3.0 SP1 to Search Server 2008, I am unable to enable incoming email for new document libraries, however the ones previously configured in WSS 3.0, still work fine.

When I attempt to enable incoming email for a document library I get this error:

The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.

I can, however, still send email to the document libraries that were setup before the upgrade to Search Server 2008.

The event log shows this error:

Exchange 2007 SP1 (on different machine) - For outgoing mail
SMTP (IIS) for incoming email

This is what I'm doing to get this error:

To enable incoming email on document library:
Click on document library.
Click Settings > Document Library Settings
Click Incoming e-mail settings under "Communications"
Options selected:
Allow this document library to receive email? Yes
Email address: artworksamples@sharepoint1.mydomainname.com
Group attachments in folders? Save all attachments in folders grouped by e-mail sender
Overwrite files with the same name? No
Save Original e-mail? Yes
Save meeting invitations? No
E-mail security policy? Accept e-mail messages based on document library permissions
Click OK
This is when I get the error: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.

Any thoughts, ideas, fixes, helpful info are appreciated.

.ci file size

I was just reading a thread with regard to a similar question, but my context is a little different; specifically this is about the size of a .ci file on a laptop. I noticed this morning that my available hard drive space had dropped significantly. It appears the culprit is a 5 GBy .ci file, or at least that's my assumption as it's the only file created within the last day of this size.

Any thoughts on what could have caused this? Also, thoughts on what I can do to mitigate.

The only other files on the machine that are close to this magnitude are hiberfil.sys & pagefil.sys

Help is appreciated!

Pound sign(#) in filename causes invalid link

I was pretty excited to try this out in the office when I got home from Tom Rizzo's session at Vegas Dev Connections.

I setup a prototype web to crawl a small folder on our file server and immediately ran into an issue. It seems that when Word or Excel filenames contain a pound sign (#), the search result icons show the generic iExplore icon and the files do not launch properly. An example filename would be \\fileserver\documents\Form #123.xls.

When a Word link with a pound sign is clicked, the open or save dialog is presented, but the file simply will not load. When an Excel link with a pound sign is clicked, the open or save dialog is presented, an error message is thrown ("\\fileserver\documents\Form cannot be found. Check your spelling, or try a different path”), but the file loads anyway. I thought maybe the HREF parameter was interpreting the pound sign as a bookmark, instead of part of the filename.

I copied the anchor tags for some offending files to a plain html file and verified that these files will not load from there either. From there, I tried to see if there was some escape character (%23, ##, etc) I could use to interpret the pound sign and get the files to load so I could tweak the Search Result's XSLT file, but I found none.

Does anyone have a workaround for this behavior?

Event ID 2436: The start address cannot be crawled

I'm getting the following error in the event log:

The start address <http://www.polymedia.co.nz> cannot be crawled.

Context: Application 'SharedServices', Catalog 'Portal_Content'

Details:

The specified address was excluded from the index. The crawl rules may have to be modified to include this address. (0x80040d07)

1. I can’t see why this URL is excluded, any ideas? (This is our public web site)

2. I added an explicit craw rule in include this URL, stopped and started the osearch services, did an iisreset and started a full crawl and the same error occurred.

Any ideas out there?
