Tushar, there are several protocols used by client applications such as the SharePoint Designer tool or the various Office 2010 applications. Some of which are grouped together into the Sharepoint Front-End Protocols.
MS-SPFEPO Section 2.2 contains good descriptions of all of the front-end protocols and has them further subdivided into logical groups such as the ones that are used by Excel, Access, etc…
If you are looking for an easy way to communicate with SharePoint programmatically I would suggest taking a look at the SharePoint 2010 SDK.

These links are now bad. Apparently, MS-SPFEPO no longer exists in the latest protocol documentation.
Anyone know where I can find the interaction between MS-Office (Word, Excel, etc) and SP?
Thanks.

Hi Greg, the contents from MS-SPFEPO can now be found in MS-SPO section 2.2.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Perhaps I'm going about this wrong.
I'd like to know which protocol is used by Office (say Word) when you open a document from IE. We are having some issues with our 'front-door', and would like to tell the network team what to expect.
Is this the webdev protocols in section 2.2.1.3? Or is it something else?

Hi Greg, the protocol that is used depends on the client OS and which version of Microsoft Office is installed. You can find the information on how the client decides which protocol to use in MS-OCPROTO section 2.1.2.1.2.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Sorry. I was to vague. The MS-OCPROTO document seems to be about the Lync (Office Communications) Server.
My interest is in the interaction between IE and SharePoint when a user clicks on a Word link and IE launches Word.

Hi Greg, I'm not sure what you were looking at, but section 2.1.2.1.2 describes how Word decides what protocol to use to retrieve the document from SharePoint. There is also a flowchart in section 3.1 that is a little easier to follow. IE does not retrieve the document from SharePoint. You can use a tool such as Fiddler to verify the behavior.Josh Curry (jcurry) | Escalation Engineer | Open Specifications Support Team
