SharePoint Index Server availability planning

Question

Since SharePoint Index Server is not cluster (failover) aware, what other options are available to achieve high availability of Index server?

One idea is to have two Index Servers and each Index server index distinct content.
Another option is to have two index servers and make on e of them active and another passive.
Can someone shed light on this issue and are there any other options?
