So purchased Win7 Home Premium, could no longer download and install updates, etc, so had to use File Transfer avail in XP. Transferred settings and files to external drive, system said it was successful! Now trying to transfer to new OS (win7) from external drive, the only folder on the drive is USMT2.UNC which is approx. 6.4 gigs; keep getting error: "No items match your search"=win7 or "folder does not contain required files"= XP program. At any rate in both versions I can't open the folder and access the data. Does Win 7 use a different name for the folder that I can rename my existing folder to?? I do have the windows.old file still on my "C" drive, should I give up and just copy & paste my data into the appropriate folders?? Really need those existing files, had wanted the settings because my wireless internet connection won't stay (no matter what I do) and thought the old settings might help with that. Need some suggestions PLEASE>Sun, 01 Nov 2009 17:44:48 Z2009-11-03T22:06:13Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/ae0993ac-bd07-4937-8ce0-8692ad4ba45ahttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/ae0993ac-bd07-4937-8ce0-8692ad4ba45aAlex Morrillhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Alex%20MorrillMSDN Release Notes - August 2009
This release contains updates made to protocol documents since the last release. It does need to force a reread "now". Is this possible ?
3) Is it possible to detect that connection to a specific server is happening with SMB2 ? Since the actions that impose restrictions are rather limited, I could get my way out with a simple messabox and a disclaimer and some minor tweaks to the code (not ideal, but acceptable in this case). But I don't want to give this messagebox when I don't have to.

ThanksWed, 09 Sep 2009 15:00:05 Z2009-09-09T21:49:54Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/e946d20c-6073-45ae-b53b-b600beb072d0http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/e946d20c-6073-45ae-b53b-b600beb072d0Ragesh_Sys_adminhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Ragesh_Sys_adminaccess denied when i trying to open a notepad file the file is in green colour because it is hiddeni am using a windows xp sp3. i logged in as administrator. i created a notepad and typed some confidential information in it. In the three other cases, the SE_DACL_AUTO_INHERITED bit is set to false.

I have a few questions about these bits:
1) Why is the SE_DACL_AUTO_INHERIT_REQ bit necessary?
2) Is it really necessary to make the SE_DACL_AUTO_INHERITED bit dependent on both bits?
3) What exactly does the Windows client do with these bits?
4) Will it be problematic if I have an SMB server which always sets the SE_DACL_AUTO_INHERITED bit to true? What will this cause Windows clients to do (or not do)?

I've been looking all over for answers to these questions, but have been unable to find anything that goes in to detail.

Thanks,
Zack
Thu, 30 Jul 2009 20:43:35 Z2009-09-04T22:08:15Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/65f1eb85-feaf-416f-bc45-1aa54eaa2a0ehttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/65f1eb85-feaf-416f-bc45-1aa54eaa2a0eAlex Morrillhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Alex%20MorrillMSDN Release Notes - June 2009

This release contains updates made to protocol documents since the last release. Oplocks are a performance enhancing feature that shouldn't actually change the behavior of a program. Imagine client1 is sitting in a loop: opening a log file, writing to the log file and closing the log file. Client2 moves the log file to a different name, between the first and second loop iterations.

If client1 did not request oplocks, the second loop iteration would begin writing to a newly created file (or fail). This is the behavior that we should still have, when a client starts using Oplocks.

If client1 requested a batch oplock and the server breaks oplocks on a rename, the second loop iteration would also begin writing to a newly created file (or fail).

However, if client1 requested a batch oplock and the server does not break oplocks on a rename (like Win7), the second loop iteration would continue writing to the old file, which now has a different file name. This behavior seems incorrect, because we've allowed oplocks to change the behavior of our program.

Am I missing something here or is this a Windows 7 bug?

Thanks!
ZackFri, 17 Apr 2009 22:55:26 Z2009-06-02T16:02:25Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/e02fdee3-15f0-4975-ad05-ca57fada1d43http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/e02fdee3-15f0-4975-ad05-ca57fada1d43mbanohttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=mbanoRetrieve Lost Offline FilesI'm not sure this is the correct forum, but please direct me to the correct one, because I need help. Here's my problem: I have a local computer that was mapped to a network folder that allowed synchronizing offline files. The problem is I've lost the files. I know they are on the hard drive because of the lack of free space available on the hard disk. I can't account for 8 gigs of missing files. My guess is the offline files are in the windows\CSC folder, but I can't find it. I've downloaded the cscmd tool but I do not have the exact original share name it was mapped to on the network. All I need to do is retrieve the Offline Files. I do not need to sync them again. I just need to access them on the local computer.Thu, 28 May 2009 00:24:03 Z2009-06-04T04:50:17Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/fd0842f6-9857-49b8-9caf-c42b05abd337http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/fd0842f6-9857-49b8-9caf-c42b05abd337Bimal V Vhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Bimal%20V%20VBinary comparison utility for the executables
Hi All,

Please help me if you have an idea on this. A major change for this release is the addition of new protocol documents for Windows 7 Beta 1. This release also contains a new version of [MS-SMB2]: Server Message Block (SMB) Version 2 Protocol Specification.

Issues specific to the December release include:

1. References to [MS-SMB2] are not consistent in the document set with respect to identifying the version of the protocol. All references will be changed from Version 2.0 to Version 2 for the January release.

2. Links to [MS-SMB] and [MS-SMB2] do not work in certain specific contexts—for example, when they appear in [MS-REF] or in Section 1.2 References within some protocol specifications. The January release will contain working links.

The following known issues exist in the December Release:

Underscore characters are not always visible in code in the PDF files depending on the magnification selected by the user. I believe the error can be seen in Frame 19. If you examine the FindFirst2ParamaterBlock section, you will see that BackupIntent is set to find without backup intent. This is an error. The BackupIntent needs to be enabled.

Download full capture

Interesting Note: I examined a similar packet trace initiated from a W2k3 client accessing the W2k3 server and it shows that BackupIntent is enabled. The request therefore succeeded.

What’s interesting is the problem does not manifest when accessing SMB2 exported shares. Vista clients have no difficulty accessing another Vista system acting as a server. The problem also does not manifest when W2k3 acts as a client accessing another W2k3 server (which is SMB version 1 to SMB version 1).

The problem only happens when accessing an SMB version 1 share exported from a W2k3 server, accessed from a Vista client.

The setup

On W2K3, create the folder C:\Temp\t\sub. Following is brief description of the problem

We have an I/O intensive ASP.NET application which does I/O using CIFS on NAS. We are observing difference in throughput on the NAS in following scenarios

1. On our staging servers from ASP.NET app which writes onto \\X\Y\Z UNC location, we get 5-6MB/sec.
2. On production servers from ASP.NET app which writes onto \\X\Y\W UNC location, we get 1-2MB/sec.
3. When we run an application (which simulates our ASP.NET app and is a windows application) from production servers we get a throughput of 10-12MB/sec (writing to same location as production).

NOTE: Same application is installed on staging and production servers. And folder 'W' (used in production) has much more folder and files as compared to folder 'Z'(used in staging).

I don't know why there is so much difference in throughput and would like to debug it to find out why. This driving me nutss!!

I have tried taking TCP dumps (checked the SMB blocks) but couldn't find any problem there. Time taken by I/O operations when calculated using SMB request-response as compared to time taken by I/O operations calculated from with in the ASP.NET application varies considerably(performs much slower). This seems to suggest there is a bottleneck in the application but i dont know for sure.

Is there any other ways which can help me debug the problem. Can some show me the way?

-Sumit Tue, 09 Dec 2008 15:58:05 Z2008-12-10T19:11:57Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/794be4a3-3221-4535-a262-796d96800824http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/os_fileservices/thread/794be4a3-3221-4535-a262-796d96800824gerritvnhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=gerritvnPCNET1 support in Windows VistaDoes Windows Vista support the "PC network program 1.0" (PCNET1) SMB dialect for network shares?

Trying to access a network share from an embedded system client using the PCNET1 dialect results in an "Access denied error".
