Dragging photos to windows live photo gallery returns system error can't view hidden files

Question

I can't see photos in my windows live photo gallery, I’ve tried adding folders but after they are added photo wlpg doesn't see any of the photos. I've tied dragging the photos into the main window but get message box called

{include a folder in the gallery}

Error listed is (Folder can't be included in the gallery) -- This folder, or a folder it's in, is marked as hidden. Photo Gallery can't index the hidden folders.

I"ve tried importing from a CD as well but after the import the photo gallery doesn't see any photos. I can see the folder which the photos are in using explorer but not photo gallery.

I can also click on the photo, within a folder, and select (open with) (windows live photo gallery) and then i get the windows live photo gallery preview window but the photo gallery itself wont see any photos.

Also the only thing i can see in the windows live photo gallery is a video from sample videos.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem so I can see my pictures in windows live photo gallery.

OS is windows 7 sp1 - Windows live photo gallery 2011 build 15.4.3538.513

Maybe this isn't the right thread but windows live didn't have any forum to post to.
