I am trying to install VS 2020 on Vista 64 bit.  The installation fails on installing .net framework 4.  If I try to install the framework separately I get an error " The semaphore timeout period has expired.  Any suggestions?

Could you collect you .Netfx4 setup logs following the instructions at http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/pages/collect.aspx and post them somewhere we can access? (you can use skydrive.live.com to post the logs).

    Thanks,

I have uploaded the logs to:

    http://cid-75024f4ca91258df.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Public?uc=1

Question - why does it seem to be beyond microsoft's capabilites to use a rational naming system for skydrive.

    Hi,

I've taken a look at your logs and they indicate that you ran into a block -

    [snippet]
    Installation Blockers:

    1. You cannot use this setup program to install the .NET Framework. For more information, see the Readme file.

[5/28/2009, 14:38:27] Global Block Checks: StopBlockers evaluated to true.
    [/snippet]

This block would appear if you manually extracted the installer package and attempted to run setup.exe directly.  The supported method for running .Net Framework Beta 1 would be to double click on the installer (dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe).  This will self-extract and pass the right parameters to setup.exe.

Out of curiousity, how did you get to this state?

    Thanks,
    ~Merrie

I tried 3 methods of installation.  First I tried from the downloaded framework 4 installer, and got the semaphore timeour message.  Then I manually extracted the installer and tried from that, and got the 'you cannot install' message that you mention above.  I then tried from the VS2010 pro downloaded installer and this gave me the semaphore time out message.  I think in fact there is a problem with the installer and not with my installation method.

Unfortunately, the .cab file you provided only shows logs for one of your attempts, the one with the blocker mentioned above.  Can you try to reproduce the issue by running the full installer? You will want to make sure you have the correct installer for the 64 bit architecture (dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe).  If you collect the resulting logs again, hopefully we will be able to see what the issue is.

    Thanks,
    ~Merrie

    Hi Merrie

That is the log that the collect programme picked up after I had run the full installer.  I have tried installing on to my laptop (32 bit) and that worked fine.  However, after trying the product out, I have decided to wait until a more stable and complete version is available.

    Hi Don,

I'm glad you were able to install it on one of your machines.  If you do try the 64bit version again and get the semaphore timeout error, let me know.  I'd be very interested to take a look at logs with that error and determine the root cause.

    Thanks,
    ~Merrie
