    Hi Slubman,

Welcome to MSDN forums. And thank you for your post.

For Windows 7, .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 is shipped with it as one of OS component.
For .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1, it includes .NET 2.0 with SP2 and .NET 3.0 with SP2 as prerequisite.
This means, you have the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 plus a few post 3.5 SP1 bug fixes on Windows 7. They are OS components. .NET 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 can be added or removed via the Programs and Features control panel. Thus, we don't need to manually install them. That's why you received the error message when you tried to install .NET 3.5 SP1 on Windows 7.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Hi Yichun,

Thank you for your reply. The reason I was trying to setup .Net framework 3.5 SP1 is because I got an error setting up Windows Live Essentials sayiing that the Visual Studio Runtime failed to install, you can see the screenshot here: http://cid-1dd6d833b63bcbb8.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/snippets/Capture.JPG

I did not know what to try so I started from assuming that the .Net framework was not installed properly. Please direct me towards the right path.

    Thanks,
    Steven Lubman

    Hi Steven,

    Thank you for your reply.

Based on your description, it seems that one Visual Studio Runtime error occurred during the installation of Windows Live.

To narrow down the possible cause of corrupted .NET Framework 3.5 installation, we can try Verification Tool to verify .NET 3.5 with SP1 on your machine.

For this error "0x80070003", it means that "The system cannot find the path specified."
Could you please try the workaround mentioned in the following similar post?
    Please check: http://www.vistax64.com/windows-live/233444-messenger-install-error-visual-studio-runtime.html

If it doesn't work, for your concern on Windows Live installation, you could try Windows Live forums . You will get more useful help there. This will make answer searching in the forum easier and be beneficial to other community members as well.

    Thank you for your understanding.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know. :)

    Best regards,
    Yichun Chen

    Hi Yichun,

I ran the verification tool and the Product verification failes for the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1. I attached the log file here:

    http://cid-1dd6d833b63bcbb8.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/setupverifier^_main^_11-04-09^_22.18.36.txt

Since does seem like the .Net setup problem I think I can continue communicating with you, since this is the right forum. How should I proceed at this point?

    Thanks,
    Steve.

    Hi Steven,

    Thank you for your reply.

Based on your description and the log file, .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is not well installed on your machine.
Could you please try to follow the steps mentioned in the following blog to repair it?
See: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/03/26/how-to-repair-the-net-framework-2-0-and-3-0-on-windows-vista.aspx (Also apply for Windows 7).

If no avail, you can try to repair OS or restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point. Here is a KB about this, please see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212/ .

Since .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is installed as a part of the OS, the cause can be that OS is not well installed or corrupted on your PC. Since the issue is related to Windows 7 installation, I think the best consulting place should be Windows 7 Installation, Setup, and Deployment  forums.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,
    Yichun Chen
