Net Framework 4 compatibility with windows XP
-
Monday, July 19, 2010 3:03 AMHi. I was wondering if .NET Framework 4 is compatible with Windows XP? If not, what version do I need to use? Also, how do you go about installing it on your computer. Do I just do a download from Microsoft? Does it have an installer for it built in? Thanks for any help, I'm kinda new at this.

Monday, July 19, 2010 4:02 AM.NET Framework 4 is compatible - both Client and Full. Version choice is yours. Comes with installer - Microsft Update offers the applicable version for your system - just select it when offered by Microsoft Update.

You should be aware that .NET 4.0 requires SP3 on Windows XP.
You can download .NET 4.0 here:

Wednesday, July 21, 2010 2:46 AMThanks for the info! Just a couple of more questions. Is there a version of Net Framework (starting with 2) that doesn't require SP3? I've kind of been putting off installing SP3 because I've been a little skittish about compatibility issues. Will most software continue to run with SP3, vice SP2? Thanks!

Hi CompuGuy & pvdg42,
Thank you for your post in MSDN forum!

Based on your concerns, would you want to install .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP?
Frankly speaking, you could install .NET Framework 4 on your machine. But you should update your machine to Windows XP Service Pack 3.
.NET Framework 4 is supported on Windows XP SP3.
Before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3, I would recommend you should refer the following link. You should invest some prerequisites.
The following link should help your concerns.

You could download Windows XP Service Pack 3 as follows.
You could download .NET Framework 4 as follows.
Hope this helps you! If you have any doubts and concerns, please feel free to let me know. We are going to continue to follow-up.

According to this, .NET 3.5 requires only SP2.
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/netfxsetup/thread/7ede75b0-151e-461f-b40e-cab905a5ecdc
If you install 3.5, which is an extension of 2.0, you will get 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5. That will cover most currently available software, which brings up the question: why do you need a .NET Framework?
Here's a link to the download you need:
