Hi so i just logged in to my MSDN account which i was invited to through a guy who had a BizSpark account for the company which he worked for. Now when i logged in i go to my profile details and see

Your default subscription is expired

what is going on, it says the account will last till 10/14/2012. but how is it expired now? Could it be that the main account of the persons whose company i am under has expired? Or i could have been removed from the list? weird how it still says that the account will expire in 2010

Hi. I tried to ask this question to my (now Ex) MSDN contacts but both have moved on. Clayton suggested I post here.

I am a contributor to the MSDN and TechNet community content. Over the past month or so, the post counts for every one of the top ten MSDN community content contributors has gone down dramatically. In my case I've lost "credit" for several thousand contributions.

Two questions:

1. What happend and is it going to be fixed.
2. Who's in charge of the wiki now that all my contacts have left. Email would be appreciated.

Tried to ContentBug the following, but got "An error has occurred". Since someone might appreciate the piece of information, I post it here instead.

It's the user provided content on the topic "Registry Key Security and Access Rights", (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms724878(VS.85).aspx) claiming the following on Regedt32:

Note that Regedt32.exe is now extinct -- it has been replaced with regedit.exe only, as of Windows XP. The regedit shipped with windows XP combines the power of the older regedt32 and regedit applications into a single program.

Not entirely true. This was changed somewhere after XP SP2 I reckon, because prior to an update, RegEdt32 was indeed needed to access the ACL interface regedit didn't incorporate.

Windows Licenses with "MSDN Operating Systems" subscription level

I'm looking for a cost-effective solution for testing my web-applications in various versions of Windows and Internet Explorer. The MSDN Operating Systems package looks perfect, but I wanted to clarify licensing issues.

I'll be using VMWare to provide a virtual environment for Windows. I'd like to setup several different virtual machines (Windows 2000 + IE5, Windows XP + IE6, Windows XP + IE7, Windows XP + IE8, Vista + IE7, etc.) These virtual machines would be running in tandem on a single physical host, used by a single developer.

I posed this situation to a phone rep earlier today, who claimed I could install and activate an unlimited number of Windows XP/Vista installs while running them simultaneously in virtual machines. That seemed too good to be true, which is why I'm posting here Will I have a problem with multiple installs of Windows XP/Vista in virtual machines? More importantly, is this behavior consistent with the terms of an MSDN membership?

Community Content Wiki issues

Some issue:

1. When editing or adding a CC item, blank lines included in the typing get stripped out. This, especially for code, can be very ugly. Can we have the old editor back please - the one that did not do this?

2. When editing or adding code, the code may look perfect, but when submitted, extra lines can be added. I'd prefer to have the blank lines I want in the code, not random lines.

3. There's no easy way to indicate hyperlink text in an article using the editor. I know I can use Live Writer to set this up, but it's hard.

4. In the MSDN wiki, the tag "NULL" seems to be being entered an awful lot. Maybe someone is doing this deliberately but it looks like (another) but.

5. When will the nice editor we have here in Forums be made available to Community Content. It's sub-optimal to have such a relatively poor editor for community content when the editor here is so much better.

6. There seems no way to get colour codeing into code that's posted to the MSDN wiki. I post a bit of PowerShell code, and would like the code here to look as nice as at http://pshscripts.blogspot.com.

Floating Orange Switch View Button

This is just a brief post to say that the new Orange "Switch View" button in the bottom right of the screen is very distracting. Its location means that it sits right where notifications usually appear from the system tray. So if you are working away on two monitors with an MSDN page open on one screen while you code in the other, the bright orange "switch view" button keeps making you glance down there thinking a notification has popped up.

Perhaps consider moving it away from that region of the window or at least not making it stick out quite so much.

I was very hesitant to post this discussion, but I thought I'll do since I might not be the only one with this issue.

I noticed that OPs tend to mark Moderators and Answerers answers more than any other contributer for some odd reason.
While this decision is completely up to the person posting the question and what works and what doesn't, I noticed many times that if two people post the same answer some OPs tend to mark the one for the moderator as an answer.

While we are all here to learn and help others learn, but since I'm not a moderator, Answerer, or MVP, I think the Answers that I give are the only way to show that I'm active on this forum.

I just hope if any contributor has any comments about a specific thread, that there is a way to pass the comments to a moderator to look into the thread.

Missing example code

I encounter many walkthroughs and other articles in the MSDN that say to use the sample code shown below but there is no sample code. Am I missing something? I don't think so but I am asking in case I am. Have others encountered that? What should I do? I have created some community content at the bottom of the page of some of them.

We launched a new design of the MSDN network over the weekend, in conjunction with the new MSDN and Visual Studio brands that went live today. The primary goals behind the new design are to improve consistency and discoverability of the content on the network. This is just the first wave in a series of updates we will be doing in the next few months, and following are the main goals for today’s global update:

Implement global site design improvements for better discoverability, readability, consistency and global experience
Provide a richer more effective learning experiences and connection to community through new features and controls (note that this relates to ratings and commenting on video, which we’ve been piloting on the Visual Basic Dev Center)
Enable additional flexibility for customization:
•       to integrate new resources into the Developer Centers, with a focus on community contribution and participation
•       to allow unique and differentiated site experiences geared to specific customers needs
•       to enable an agile global deployment of new and updated features
Improve the rendering performance of key pages
Introduce additional viewing options and performance improvements within the MSDN Library

Following are some of the more frequently asked questions regarding the new design:

Q. Why did you change the page layout for the Developer Centers?

A. As part of the redesign project we produced a new set of templates for use across the global network. To ensure consistency, and ability to deploy new controls and features, we chose to move to a fixed-width layout. The change was made only to the Dev Centers – not the Library, Forums, or galleries. This approach allows us to do better at controlling the positioning and experience of site navigation and information architecture.

Q. How did you decide on the new color scheme?

A. The new colors largely reflect the color scheme associated with the new MSDN and Visual Studio brand changes. As we look forward, the goal is to move the Dev Centers to a closer alignment with Microsoft products, since the centers are really an extension of these products. So in the coming months, you will see some of our major sites (Windows Dev Center, Office Dev Center) adopting color schemes and other design elements that are much more in line with the products.

Q. Why are you adding animations to pages?

A. This redesign launch included a number of new Silverlight controls, such as the community content control on the home page of MSDN and the blog visualizer on the community page some of which include the option to animate the feature. We’ve received feedback from some folks that the animations are distracting, and have already taken action on this over the past weekend. The first change we made is to turn off animation for the new video scroller (10/18). Today (10/21) we also decided to turn off the "autoplay" mode for the Community Activity control on the MSDN Home Page, and across the Dev Centers. We plan to re-introduce this feature with the option for running in autplay mode, but with the default turned to "off".

Q. How many pages were updated as part of this?

A. There are over 11,000 pages across the global Developer Centers, and the new design and templates have been applied to all of them. We chose to do this as a global project, so that we could keep the global experience in synch across all the international sites. In addition all of the Library, Forums, and Gallery pages have been updated with today’s launch.

Unable to successfully install upgrade to Windows xp home edition to Windows XP professional

My computer came with Windows XP home edition installed. I bought a brand new upgrade to windows XP professional, which I did not try to install until today. I tried installing it twice because at the end of installation the screen when starting the computer keeps saying windows XP home edition. I would think that it should say Windows XP Professional if the installation was successful.

Also, I was unable to activate the installation either by using the the shortcut to activate windows, or also by trying by way of Start--All programs---accessories---system tools----activate windows. When I click on activate windows nothing happens and there is no wizard to guide me through the activation.

I cannot register either.

When attempting to install the upgrade I entered the product key and followed the other directions too.

Why can't I install the upgrade and why cannot activate th einstallation, or register either?

How can I solve these problems?

What will happen to MSDN Community content with new version of Visual Studio and .NET?

Hi,
As new Visual Studio 2010 is nearer and nearer MSDN already contains documentation for it and .NET 4.0 Beta 2 - contemporary without Community Content.
I expect that when VS 2010 turns RTM (or earlier) community content will be allowed for VS.100 pages.
My question is: What will happen to our current VS.90 contributions? Will it be migrated to VS.100 pages or will it be visible only on VS.90 pages and getting obsolete?
As many of contributions are valid for more than one version of Visual Studio I like them to be migrated, copied or somehow made visible from VS.100 pages.

FeatureRotator?

The new site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx) uses what I'm guessing is a component to scroll between a few highlights. Right now it's scrolling through Silverlight, MVC, and Azure. It might be a simple one-time javascript project, but in that case it should be turned INTO a component! It appears to be called "FeatureRotator". Is that a component that is available to the rest of us? It doesn't look particularly difficult to write, but I hate reinventing the wheel! Anyone know anything about it?

Hi,

I'm developing new documentation generator for .NET applications/libraries (successor of the NDoc), because the output that my tool produces is very close to the content of MSDN library, when documenting a member of type that inherits from type that forms .NET framework there is a need to put some description of this member in class/structure member listing. Take for instance the System.Object class, every class derives from this class, if I want to generate documentation for any class, in addtition to documenting members of this class I also have to put the <summary> tag [1] of methods such as ToString(), GetHashCode(), etc. in type's member listing. I had decided to write a tool that uses MTPS content web service [2] and collects short ID (for example hxz0dezc for System.Data.OleDb.OleDbType Enumeration), caption (OleDbType), DocId (T:System.Data.OleDb.OleDbType) and the <summary> tag ("Specifies the data type of a field, a property, for use in an OleDbParameter .") for all namespaces/types/members for .NET 2.0, .NET 3.0, .NET 3.5, Silverlight 3 frameworks. After days of swearing, praying and debbuging I have successfully written a tool that meets my needs and stores the shortID, caption, DocId, and the summary tag for all namespaces/types/members of specified framework into a SQLite database, so that my generator can quickly look up desired type or member and put the <summary> tag from .NET framework type/member in type's member listing.

But the one question arises now, will I violate MSDN library licensing rules if I distribute previously mentioned content along with my application ?

Why is Community content not included on the Lightweight page?

One of the things I think MSDN has done right recently was the addition of the community content to their pages. Sometimes having someone make a comment at the bottom "fleshes" out the Microsoft provided content or clarifies an issue. I will will agree that sometimes the community provided content is not great, or is more of a question that should be put in the forums; however, I've actually found some pretty useful stuff left by people.

That being said, I find it odd that you can't see the communicity content with the lightweight beta view. I understand MSDN is wanting to reduce the amount of information/script/"glitz" on the screen with the lightweight view, but they should at least indicate that there IS communicty content on the full view if they aren't showing it on the lightweight view. That way someone could move over to it if they wanted to see it.

Even better would be AJAX that would go fetch the community content if the user asked for it.

Don't get me wrong! I want the msdn forums site to improve and that's why I'm making this suggestion. My example: I can say 'know' about WinForms, Asp.net, WCF, C# and vb.net, msbuild and a few other stuff. But when do I get on the msdn forum? whenever I'm having a problem. When I'm stuck I get in the appropriate forum and search for a solution to my problem and if nothing showed up I'd enter a question. My questions are always responded by some MSFT moderator, so it's pretty mush always the right solution. But, what I don't do, is going thru each of theses forums watching what are people asking. Maybe I could give a fast response to someone but I don't, cause I'd have to dedicate all my time to do that. So, where is stackoverflow.com different? Every single question is on the home page (as they enter). They have these tag which you can kinda subscribe to, so whenever a question of one of your tags is made that question appears in a different color and I know that is gonna be of my interest. Maybe I could go ahead and post a question or just keep it under the radar. If the msdn site had something like that we (the community) could give answers quickly and no ' moderators' would be needed. Better yet, the stackoveflow site accept only whoever asks the question to mark the answer. The msdn site could allow moderators to also mark the answer (or something like that) Anyway, just a suggestion.

MSDN Subscriptions - feeling short-changed

I subscribe to MSDN Professional as I am self-employed and that is what my budget dictates.

Microsoft should offer their COMPLETE set of development tools and not peace-meal. That means as developers, tools that integrate with VS2008 should be INCLUDED in the MSDN Professional package, like Expression Blend for intance.

How can MS put out tools that go together and make development that much more "streamlined" from design through to delivery and NOT include a tools like Blend for Silverlight?

Sorry, feeling rather short-changed by MS right now and I'm sure others feel the same on different tools. I don't need Team Suite and Visio etc etc that is in Premium but at least complete the basic toolset in the Professional Edition.

Microsoft, show just a lttle respect for the 1000s of developers that DO subscribe to your product libraries and make more complete packages conducive to a full dev. setup and not continually expect more $$ around EVERY corner. Another $1300 more for a Premium subscription that I don't need...just for the Expression tools which, in my opinion SHOULD go along with Visual Studio? I think not!

Many MSDN subscribers are dissatisfied with the current "MSDN DVD Shipments" page and are wondering how they can search for an old DVD. I understand the old "Shipment Index" page has been replaced by the "MSDN DVD Shipments" page:

Hi,

I don't know if this is the right place, but here it goes.

When I'm trying to use ELMS downloader, for downloading let's say System Center Configuration Manager from MSDN, there are 4 steps:

Steps

1. Authorization
2. Downloading
3. Unpacking
4. Launch Install

Mine, blocks on the 3th step, Unpacking! This does not happen with every product, but it does happen with quite a few.

It starts the CRC Check, and it stays on the beginning.. 1% "Checking file CRC"
Worst part, is that it does not give me an error, it just stays there.

Can anyone help me?

Slow Transfer Speeds For File Transfer Manager 5.0 Build 0032

I have a 20Mbit internet connection. When I download from the Microsoft download site I can get files downloading at reported speeds of up to 1.7 Mbytes per second.

When downloading from the TechNet Benefits section I have to use the Transfer Manager and I can only get speeds that vary between 30-80 Kbytes per second. Rarely any faster.

I am using XPPro & IE7 straight out onto the Internet via my router / firewall. No proxy server.

What can I do to speed the process up or bypass the File Download Manager?

Switch View and Low Bandwith options

The MSDN pages system features:
use the ... "Low Bandwidth" option, and the now infamous "Floating Orange Switch View" option are my current issue.

The LB seems to be no more and the SV early on showed 3 picks but ... "no more for me (you)" (... a Seinfield thing ...).

Yes, I still use IE6 SP1 and MSDN is phasing me out ... right? (... or is it ... outright)?

By the way (BTW), I really liked the Low Bandwidth option which absolutely solved the off-the-screen scrollbar problem for IE6 SP1 users, but now that fix it is apparently gone? Does the SWITCH VIEW classic option do the same fix?
The SWITCH VIEW Button flyout no longer works for me; so I cannot research the issue.

I would like to point out a small error in the hungarian version of the site. When hitting the hungarian version of the msdn main page the search box watermark says : "MSDN keresése a Bing segítségével" what means something like 'Search for MSDN with Bing' what is might not what it should mean :)

This is a small thing, i just reported to let You know about it.

How do you get rid of the orange 'Switch View / Feedback' box in the lower corner of MSDN sites? I don't want to stare at that thing on every MSDN page I go to. It is is distracting. Also, I just realized that the 'Body' text input area for making a new forum post does not word wrap automatically.

Off-topic community content in "throw (C# Reference)" documentation

There is a Community Content ("Sample of throwing and catching an exception - written in PowerShell") in the throw (C# Reference) page that is sample PowerShell code. I don't understand why it is there, except possibly to try to convince C# developers to use PowerShell.

Community content - Error occured while saving your data

I was trying to post a comment to the MSDN community content wiki at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8eyb2ct1.aspx when I got the popup message "Error occured while saving your data."

I hope this is a transient error?

Certain pages don't render

Several of the links from this page
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.common.dbdatareader_members.aspx

do not render in firefox.

Two I have noticed are "Read", "NextResult".

D'oh! They don't render in IE either!
