Tonite (6/16/09), we are getting an error message in our translator widget: "The Microsoft® Translator widget is not registered to this site, click here to learn more."  We have been in the beta since a few weeks after release, and have had no problems with it until now.  I don't want to just madly start replacing code etc. until I find out what I should be doing.  Were there changes because of Bing that I need to be aware of?

    Thanks,
    Kip Kniskern

Folks - thank you for your patience on this one. It has been hard to repro this behavior (it is rare, and only seems to affect specific browser sessions) but our scheduled release next week has improvements that should ensure this does not recur.

In the meantime, if you encounter this - clearing your cache should fix it.

Thanks a lot. I reused the invite code to generate a new snippet for Production, and now both Dev and Prod. seem to be working well. Thanks again for the quick responses on this.

I just checked from multiple machines and sites, and it looks like both sites are showing the widget. Can you check and let us know if this is not the case?

Yes, the widget came back up about an hour after I posted.  Not sure what the glitch was, but it wasn't on our end

    Hello,

My friend added the MT Widget on this blog site, http://Win7.jp

He said that he often gets the error message,

    “Microsoft Translator ウィジェットはこのサイトに登録されません。詳細はこちらを参照してください。

If I translate it into English then, like that. ( sorry, I don’t understand well.)

“The Microsoft Translator Widget isn’t  registered on this site. Please find detailed here. ”

The error message usually disappear if he refreshes the page. And the Widget works.

But I often use the widget on his site, but I haven’t seen it.

Would you tell me what is this?

Note: He is using the widget on some domains.

    Thank you very much,

    Michiyo

I have had the same problem with my websites and have removed the widget because it does not work properly. It displays an error that says it is not registered to the site. I tried to contact the translator support team but I get no answer. Would love to have the translator on my sites but not until it functions properly.

Vikram, the widget still goes off occasionally with same messages as written above. I've tested this scenario in following browsers: Firefox 3.5, Opera 10.x, Internet Explorer 8, and Chrome.

Hey guys - we rolled out some improvements yesterday that should help with this. Let me know if this behavior still shows up on your sites? If you notice this behavior on a page, can you copy the generated source of the page into an email and send it to us (along with the URL of the page) at mtcont@microsoft.com?
    Thanks!

    Hi,

It seems that the changes that you rolled our are not working at all. Also, I don't think it is a rare behavior because ot occassionally happens with anyone who uses the widget. Here's what I currently noticed, the following behavior was observed:

    1. I added the widget to our Development site to test it there for 2 weeks. At the beginning, I was getting the "not registered" error, but then it started   behaving better.

    2. Yesterday, I moved the widget to production and changed the hyperlink portion of the html code with our production URL. I soon started seing the same "not registered" error which was then dissapearing and then reappearing for no reason. It obviously had to do something with the machine and probably Internet browser because at the time when I was seing an error on my machine (Windows Vista Home Premium with Internet Explorer 7), I didn't see the error on a different machine (Apple OS 10 with Safari).

    3. Today I observed another strange behavior. I got the error message again when I typed in the URL. I then tried to open the URL from my favorites and it didnt' work either. I then opened the Development site from my favorites and this one worked. I then opened Production again from my favorites and it worked too. I then refreshed the page and it stopped working (both Dev and Prod). I then repeted the steps starting from Dev and it worked again. I repeated the process a couple times and every time I got the same thing.

Any help or ideas will be appreciated. Thanks!

Just to make sure we are on the same page - each snippet that you generate has an appID that is specific to the domain/URL that you are using. So for example, an appID that is generated for viks.org works for all subdomains of viks.org (like lb.viks.org) and for all URLs under viks.org (like viks.org/members/). On the other hand, an appID that is generated specifically for subdomain (say members.viks.org) or specific URL (say viks.org/childpage/) do not work for the upper level domain (viks.org).
The reason why each invite code is valid for multiple attempts is to ensure users could generate multiple snippets for their development site and production site.
If anytime that the appID in the snippet does not match the URL it was generated for, then you will see the not registered message.

Provided all this is taken into account, and you are still seeing an issue - could you please contact us at mtcont@microsoft.com? We will troubleshoot one on one with you to identify and solve this issue. It has been an elusive issue to reproduce - so it would be fantastic to have your help with tracking it down.

    Thank you!
    Vikram

    Hi,

I believe when I was provided with the Invite code, and I generated the snippet from it, I generated the snippet for the Dev page. So now from what you mentioned, my understanding is that I need a new Invite code that will generate me a new snippet that I can put in Production? That sounds good, but it took me 3 months to get the invite code for the first snippet. I thought I am already in production with this functionality. Am I going to have to wait for a new code another few months? I can't... Is there something else I can do? Can I reuse the invite code that I have to generate a new snippet for my production environment and not have this functionality in Dev anymore?

If what you are saying is true, how then I am still able to use the Transaltor widget in Production? Like I said, the only thing I changed when I moved the widget from Dev to PRod was to modify the URL address within the HTML code of the snippet to take the Prod URL, and not Dev. It is working well, the only time I have the problem is when you click to refresh the page. Then it breaks. If I run the Dev site though, and then go back to Prod, the widget is back and working, and I think it will be stable and working the entire time unless I refersh the page. That doesn't make much sense to me. Also, the error is not web service, or service based because when I see the 'Not registered" error on one machine and I go try it on another it is still working.

But anyway, please let me know what can I do to generate an original Production snippet quickly? Otherwise I will be glad to help you with tracking the issue. I am an MSDN license holder and a .NET developer and it is of my interest to ensure that Microsoft tools are working well and without problems.

    Thanks for the help.

Yes - you should be able to reuse the invite code multiple times (a minimum of 5 unique appIDs can be generated with it). All the appIDs you generate are valid and will continue working.  If for any reason it has been exhausted - feel free to email me at mtcont@microsoft.com with your Microsoft Connect userid/liveID and I will send you another one.

The reason why you see the widget on production may have to do with how the browser cache works - if you refresh you will likely see the auth message.

    Thanks for your patience!
    Vikram

All this talk of Invite code and snipped has me confused.  I enter one email address and get a bunch of code to add to my site.  My problem is if I enter the site as http://www.sonomacountyna.org and use that code, then when visitors to my site get their using the address http://sonomacountyna.org the widget doesn't work (Not registered).

Is there a way to get the widget to work regardless of the address visitors use to get to the site?  Like being able to register more than one version of the site address with a single instance of the widget?
