General DiscussionUse Mesh Client Beta and Live Framework Client Side by Side

There have been requests around running both Mesh Client Beta (installed from www.mesh.com) and Live Framework Client (installed from developer.mesh-ctp.com) side by side. Here are the instructions:

    1.       Uninstall Live Framework Client.

    2.       Install Mesh Client Beta from www.mesh.com.

    3.       Add the following registry item:

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Live Framework Client\AllowSxS = 1 (DWORD)

    4.       Install Live Framework client from developer.mesh-ctp.com.

To make sure both clients working properly, you need follow the exact install order above.

    There are some known issues:

    ·         It might be confusing which client you are signing. You can tell the difference from the title of the sign in dialog. The title with “Live Mesh Beta” is the client targeting www.mesh.com. The title with “Live Mesh TECH PREVIEW” is Live Framework Client targeting developer.mesh-ctp.com.

After sign in, you will see two icons in your system tray. The icon with hammer is Live Framework Client.

    ·         With both clients installed, if users uninstall Mesh Client Beta (some users might see black screen for a few seconds), users are signed off automatically from Live Framework Client. When users sign in again, they may get an error while login to Live Framework Client. Users may not sign in again even after restart the client. To workaround, download httpcfg.exe and run the following commandline with escalated priviledge:

    httpcfg.exe set urlacl -u http://localhost:2048/ -a D:(A;;GX;;;WD)

Then restart the Live Framework Client and sign in.

    ·         If users install Live Framework Client first and then install Mesh Client Beta later, users will be signed out automatically from live Framework Client. Users have to restart the client and sign in again.

    Thank you

Thank you!!  These instructions worked great on my box.  Now I need to see if there are registry settings that enable folder synchronization in the Live Framework Client. ;-)

All good for me so far too!! Now got all the code I've written in the last few years stored in one place on the Mesh. Nice!

Rong, can I suggest that when you provide information like this that you provide screenshots e.g. Of the registry after its been edited, of the systray with both running etc... a picture tells a thousand words.

Is anyone else seeing everything after "There are some known issues:" in Rong's post at the top of this thread written in the greek alphabet? Strange given I can read it ok in my RSS reader.

I see normal characters in every browser except Chrome.  But at least I can see those weird characters so much faster than in any other browser... ;-)  I kid, Chrome is my default browser except when I'm on these forums due to weirdness in the rich text editor.

    Hi Jemie and Oran,

When I initially composed the message, I did have screen shots. But when I copy/paste, the screen shot didn't show up. I guess the forum does not like it.

Anyway, I'm glad it works for you.

    THanks

Yeah, you have to manually hack the HTML!

Hi guys,  I happen to install both the clients before a week (http://jomit.blogspot.com/2009/01/live-mesh-beta-live-mesh-tech-preview.html), fortunately it was in the same order suggested but I didn't had to change the registry to make the framework client work !!!

Also I did check my registry and there is not entry for AllowSxS in there and still its working for me :) I am running Vista Business (without SP1)

    Hi,

Where do I get the Mesh Client Beta softwareI went to www.mesh.com and I installed my local machine into the Mesh. But I still don't see the Live Mesh Client listed in my installed software.

    THANKS.

I'm sure everyone will be interested to learn that as of the April CTP the Live Framework Client and Mesh Client now work correctly when installed on the same machine. Also, the Live Framework Client now works with Windows 7 Beta.

So I guess there's no more reason to have this as a sticky post??

Same question... is it necessary to follow the instructions in the first post when installing the April CTP? I presently have several Mesh folders, and want to enable the LOE to test out apps that our dev team is building. The April CTP instructions still refer to this post.

I tried changing the registry settings but there seems to be some problem as i am not able to see both the versions. Is there any way which can share the data also between the mesh folders of both the versions. In that way synchronization at the local LOE can be achieved.

    Abishek4HCL -

The Live Mesh Beta and the Live Framework CTP are completely separate. It is not possible to view or synchronize mesh objects between the two environments.

Yes, both the Live Framework client and the Live Mesh client can co-exist -- but you must install the Live Framework client first.  So, if like me, you already had the Live Mesh client installed, you will need to uninstall it, and then reinstall in the correct order.  I did this successfully on 3 or 4 different machines already.
