I am getting a message during the install of VLS RTM that Beta 1 is still installed after I uninstalled Beta 2 (as noted in the instructions).

How can I get rid of any remaining traces of VLS Beta 1 so that the RTM install can continue?

Ok...here we go.  This is something you should be very careful about doing. However this should get you unblocked.   Note - since your machines are in a somewhat compromised state already (old beta stuff still around it seems), you could possibly encounter some other broken functionality with Lightswitch RTM if you install it on these boxes.

It would be "Best" and hightly recommmended to flatten these boxes after dealing with any Beta products...

However, if you really want to try to push this along you can do the following (this should work):

From Start - Run launch "regedit.exe" (ensure you run it elevated with admin perms)

    ON x64 machines go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\10.0\STD and remove this STD key (this will be for Beta1)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\10.0\vslscore and remove this vslscore key (this will be for Beta2)

    On x86 machines go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\10.0\STD and remove this STD key (this will be for Beta1)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\10.0\vslscore and remove this vslscore key (this will be for Beta2)

Now re-attempt your Lightswitch RTM install.  Hopefully unblocked now.

    Robert,

That did it (at least on my Windows XP SP3 workstation).

The install completed successfully on my computer, which has VS2010 Ultimate installed on it.

    Thanks for your assistance!

Before I show you some steps I've taken to try to resolve the issue (though all failed), let me inform you that the system I'm working on is running Windows Vista Business X64 with 4.00 GB RAM and a Dual-Core  2.27 GHZ CPU.
Here are a few solutions I've tried to resolve this problem:
One thing I noticed was that when I run the installer, it unpacks to my external hard drive.  I've used that as a backup to applications increase the internal drives crash, so I wondered if I had a Beta 1 application on the drive, could that cause the issue?  I unplugged the external drive and ran the installer again, only to get the same error message.  Well, maybe I have a beta 1 project stored locally?  I moved all my projects from my internal drive to the external and disconnected the external again, then ran the RTM install, but again, I got the same message.  So projects have nothing to do with it!
I found the VSLightSwitch Beta 1 download I did back from when it was release.  Attempting to install it yielded it trying to download more files from Microsoft that have apparently been removed because the install fails.  My thought process was that if I could install Beta 1 then fully uninstall it, I'd be able to install the RTM version, but without being able to get the necessary files this theory proved to be incorrect.  The same attempt at reinstalling Beta 2 gave me the same result.
My next thought was "what about orphaned registry files?" So I ran CCleaner using the Registry Scan option.  Backed up the Registry and deleted the files it found.  After that, I opened up Regedit and searched the keys for the word "LightSwitch".  After it found one, I backed up the ENTIRE registry AGAIN, then I deleted the entry in the registry.  I then went back to searching the keys for "LightSwitch" and deleted any other keys it found.  After doing this, I took the chance and restarted my computer attempting to install the RTM, but I still got the error this thread talks about.
I then discovered (from http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/lightswitchgeneral/thread/8fd7a149-45eb-42b8-83cf-6198f4339570) that the registry key for Beta 1 is {F7F302FD-E792-3FCB-9019-A6FA6E1C7088}.  So I searched for that key, but found none.  I tried going to the command prompt and running the command msiexec /X {F7F302FD-E792-3FCB-9019-A6FA6E1C7088}.  I get prompted to uninstall the product ("Are you sure you want to uninstall this program?") and I confirmed and was told the uninstaller was only good for installed programs.  My interpretation: Beta 1 is already uninstalled!
So I continued digging and discovered that the following applications may also have remnants from the Betas as they were part of the Beta 1 (and/or Beta 2 installations):
    WCF Ria Services SP1
    SilverLight 4 SDK
    Silverlight
    Web Deployment Tool
Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010
    SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP 2 X64
    SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2
    SQL Server 2008
SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Objects
    SQL Server System CLR Types
    Microsoft HelpViewer 1.0
    Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Multitarget
    Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended
So, using the IOBit Uninstaller, I set about a batch uninstall that would also remove all registry entries from these applications.  Be forewarned, that this process is VERY time-consuming, but let me save you such time by saying upon completed the standard uninstall programs, I ran the IOBit powerful scanner to search the registry for remnants of those uninstalled programs and I deleted them, restarted the computer and attempted to install the RTM, but yet again, failure with the Beta 1 message.
Rest assured I have not tried all of this in vain, because I KNOW that Beta 1 had to be removed so that I could utilize Beta 2.  I also Beta 1 was removed from the  initial steps I explained to you above.
Obviously, an easy solution is to just put LightSwitch RTM on a clean OS.  And while viable for some, it's not very practical for most.  Especially if that involves formatting the systems existing hard drive!
I'm still on the search for a resolution to this problem and will continue to post information as I gather it for your review!

    Jeff,

Thanks for all your sleuthing.  I too went into the registry to delete references to 'Lightswitch' that I assumed should not be there if the product was uninstalled.  But, like you, that didn't solve the issue.

I didn't go to the lengths you did to use IOBit to remove other references.  Probably just as well, because that doesn't appear to be the issue either.

    I'm still looking...

Great Post Jeff although on a failed task - a good investigative reportage.

The only 'LightSwitch' I found in the registry was the extensions which I removed, but to no avail. Right clicking the exe file and looking for previous versions did not indicate any as well.

Hey folks - sorry for the problem you are encountering.

Since it looks like you are not locating Lightswitch beta components in the Add/Remove Programs list,

please go to http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2005/07/01/using-msiinv-to-gather-information-about-what-is-installed-on-a-computer.aspx and follow the directions getting msiinv.exe and on how to use msiinv.exe to output what products are installed on your machine.

Once you have this output info, you will need to look for anything that says "lightswitch" in that output.  Take the corresponding "productcode" for each and run from an elevated command prompt something like the following:

    msiexec.exe /x {yourlightswitchproductcode} /quiet

Do this for any Lightswitch stuff.

Hopefully this will address the issue.  if not, you should also search for anything else that might contain "Beta" in it and see what they are related to. You might want to remove them as well in similar fashion.

Sounded promising, and MSIInv did find the Lightswitch Training Kit. I uninstalled that with MSIExec but Lightswitch RTM still will not install. Same error.

Thanks for introducing to this neat tool.

msiinv did not bring up anything close to 'LightSwitch'

This is the only reference to 'Beta' in the output list:

Yes, delete those keys if applicable.

It is best and recommended to not install Lightswitch (or any VS) Beta products on any "production" machine because of the possible problems that can occur. To "flatten" means format and reinstall the OS or return to a "backed up state" that was prior to installing the Beta product.

NOTE - I saw above that some folks were going through the registery and "deleting" everything Lightswitch.  This could explain the reason msiinv.exe tool to not return anything for Lightswitch Beta btw.

    Hopefully all goes well.

I'm having a failure installing as well.  The earlier solutions don't work for me.  This is Windows 7 Ultimate, x64

The registry key specified doesn't exist for me.  Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\10.0, all I have are bsln, vslsserverprereqs and vstdcore.

The output of msiinv only showed a TFS item for lightswitch.  With that removed, still cannot install.  The dd_error_vs_vslscore_100.txt says as below. I tried installing from a CD based off the ISO, as well as using the web installer.

So can you give me a little more history regarding what you have installed previously on this machine in regards to Lightswitch (betas)  and visual Studio 2010 products?  Also in the "blocking" setup dialog, what does it say exactly?

    thanks

Also just want to be sure that when you launched "regedit.exe" that you launched it "evelated as administrator" for making those changes.

Additionally, can you be more specific about what the actual product name was for "TFS Item for Lightswitch" before it was removed?

  • Monday, August 08, 2011 4:46 AM

One of the trials I made was to insert the VS 2010 premium disk and repair, followed by reinstalling the SP1 as well.  That made no difference.

The VSTS item (not TFS as I thought) I removed was one apparently I shouldn't have.  It certainly made no difference.  When I bring up VS now, I get the error "The VSTS for Database Professionals package did not load correctly".  I can't remember the name of the product I removed from programs and features to cause this, but it did have Lightswitch in the name.

I had beta 2 of lightswitch installed.  When I first try to install the RTM, it failed with a message about the beta.  So I uninstalled the beta and tried again, resulting in the error indicated earlier.

I us Registry Workshop rather than regedit.  But I just did try again as admin, just in case. No difference.  Also tried regedit, in admin mode.  Still doesn't show anything under the 10.0 key for STD or vslscore.

Items installed in VS2010 include Typemock Isolator, PostSharp, CodeSmart, the DevExpress Universal Suite, AQTime 7, InstallAware 11, and some addins such a CSS is Less, Entity Designer Database Generation Power Pack, Productivity Power tools and Power Commands.

When I choose Install Now on the lightswitch 2011 installer, the error dialog is "Setup could not install the following component: Microsoft Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 - ENU". This is during step 2/2.  Programs and features does show "Lightswitch 2011 Deployment Prerequisites" installed.

Some progress here has been made then?

Looks like you are no longer "blocked" by the setup saying that you have to first "uninstall beta". Is that correct?  At this time, looks like you are now running the LightSwitch setup and it attempts to install but is now failing on step 2 of 2. Can you again share out the contents of dd_error_vs_vslscore_100.txt again?

So not sure if you have done this already but let's do it again in case since it looks like you have some "Lightswitch" stuff installed already...

So please again go to http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2005/07/01/using-msiinv-to-gather-information-about-what-is-installed-on-a-computer.aspx and follow the directions getting msiinv.exe and on how to use msiinv.exe to output what products are installed on your machine.

Now retry your Lightswitch installation.  Hopefully this will get you installed successfully.

If it fails again, please review the following logs that is also found in the same location as the error log you were reviewing earlier (in your %tmp% likely).  The log file is called:  dd_depcheck_VS_SIM_100.txt

This log file summarizes the dependencies that are checked on to ensure that they are all installed prior to installs Lightswitch.  Go to the end of the file and work your way up and see what it says. YOu might find a clue here that indicates what may be occuring.  There is also another log in that same location which is a more detailed log of the setup process.  It is also in this same location and its name is: dd_install_vs_vslscore_100.txt  Again you can review this from the bottom up and see if something pops out as being the issue or maybe it will have a more descriptive reason for the error there.

    Thanks!

I had performed the msiinv/msiexec step already based on earlier posts, but did again at your suggestion run msiinv, followed by msiexec /x for all lightswitch-related products.  Attempting to install failed.

    What I also then tried:

    * Uninstalled Visual Studio and all add-ins, then reinstalled.  Lightswitch still failed.

    * Restored an image of my system from early July that still had the Lightswitch beta on it.  Uninstalled the beta and tried to install Lightswitch.  Same error.

    * System update recently reported a  failure to install SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1, so I repaired the 2008R2 developer install and then successfully installed SP1.  Then tried Lightswitch.  Same error.

    * Every time, it tries to install the same product (from the depcheck  file)

    08/11/11,09:08:52] !!!Components to    be installed:

I verified in Programs/Features that this is already installed, including the X86 version.  Nonetheless, I also ran the installs for the feature pack.  Lightswitch still tried to install it again.  That's the 'step 1' I see in the Lightswitch install.

The dd_install_vs_vslscore_100.txt file has this in it:

    [08/11/11,09:08:52] DepCheck: gencomp9475,{12CDA52C-7A8F-4785-8A22-53C87393FEE0}

[08/11/11,09:08:52] Microsoft Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 - ENU: Install(): Not attempting to call MsiInstallProduct()!!!! Baseline not met!

Which seems to say that it still failing due to something in the management objects or related, but I can't figure it out.

Frankly, I'm out of ideas here.  Why can't the install just say "The installation of Lightswitch failed because X", where X is something clear like "Required prerequisite YYYYY not installed", "YYYYY is wrong version", "YYYYY is corrupt"?

I think this effort is way too much just to install. I think you who should,

    1. Flatten your computer and bring it to the virgin state

    2. You could buy a 'test computer' for around $400 and try it out

I really think the add/remove programs can now be classified as 'legacy'.

Microsoft really should come up with a better system. Most of the problems is due to 'too many notes'.

The interdependency, the CTPS, the betas etc.; the interaction of database server, the internet information services; and the plethora of .NET framework components makes it really impossible to design one software that can be installed on a 'given computer' no matter how well you define it in the System Requirements section. All developers will not get a configured machine to specifically work with a specified software except perhaps the MSFT employees where no problems are encountered.

I was thinking along the same lines.  I have a laptop without all the baggage of my primary development system.  I'll use it for Lightswitch.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

    Hello

Great, we know which prerequisite component that is failing(SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Objects)!

What is odd, from the above comments, it sounds like you should on this box already have Visual Studio 2010 + Sp1 installed correct?  SP1 should have already installed almost all requirements you need for Lightswitch....

To continue:  Our Lightswitch Setup detection logic is looking at the following to determine if it needs to install this component.  If this "detect value" is already there (same or newer) we should not even attempt to install it.

    DetectKey=HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Redist\SharedManagementObjects\1033\CurrentVersion
    DetectKeyVal=Version
    DetectKeyValData=10.50.1750.9

Another check is to review your Add/Remove Programs (Control Panel -->Uninstall Programs) dialog and see if you see this product listed.  If you are on X64 machine (and have VS 2010 + Sp1 installed), you will see two listings here for "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Objects". One if for x86 and one is for x64.  Please also review the versions info (needs to be 10.50.1750.9 or greater) for them and ensure they are both the same (if you have both   as on a x64 box).

So if you do see them there in the "Uninstall Programs" dialog and they are the correct versions, I suggest running "repair" on these components.  You may need to go to get sources for them.  if you do, x86 is available at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=208518 and http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=208517 for the x64 version.

If this succeeds, ensure the 'reg detection key' stuff is there and our Lightswitch setup should just skip over this component.

If you continue to find failure with the LS setup, I will continue to monitor this thread and hopefully we can push through the issues you are having.

    -Thanks

    Thanks Robert!

That did it even for the install of LightSwitch 2011 Trial.

The install of this claimed that the beta 1 was still installed even though any other trace of it had been removed.
